39:12 For context about Penumbra Phantasm, Toby back on the day used to work on the soundtrack of Homestuck. In it though, Toby made motifs for Penumbra Phantasm hidden in the soundtrack, foreshadowing the song. However the song itself was unfortunately never made due to Toby not being able to make a version of the song he was satisfied with. Though over the years, some demos of the song has been leaked, and its even hidden in some UT/DR songs (for ex: you can faintly hear it in Hopes and Dreams, and THE HOLY has a part of Penumbra Phantasm). So in a weird way, the song is in a purgatory of being lost media and not at the same time. The reason why many people (including me) believe this song will finally have an offical version and make a return in DR is because of its religous background, it likely being associated with the ANGEL, and it being related to Homestuck which has religous themes, and therefore this song has religous theme (i have not read homestuck, so take this with a grain of salt). Thats the general gist. I hope this helped?

There’s also the thing where whenever Toby has been asked about Penumbra Phantasm, his response is “AT SHADOW’S EDGE SHATTER THE TWILIGHT REVERIE” which sounds very deltarune-esque

In an eclipse of two objects, a penumbra is the area between the umbra and antumbra. The umbra is basically the part covered in complete darkness, while the antumbra is where the eclipsed object is visible as a ring around the eclipsing object. Most importantly though, the penumbra is the area where a portion of the light is visible. A partial eclipse. Twilight is the light coming from the sun while it is below the horizon. Both penumbra and twilight can be associated with the intersection of light and dark. The bridge between two extremes. The border separating complete darkness and light. With what danielwolf has cited, it’s possible that Toby is hinting at the Dark World leaking into the Light World in some way, maybe during the Roaring, especially with Susie’s dialogue at the end of Chapter 2. My theory is that, during the Roaring, some Darkners will appear in the Light World. “SHATTER THE TWILIGHT REVERIE” could mean breaking the borders between the Light and Dark Worlds, allowing Darkners to appear in the Light World as Darkners rather than as objects.

toby didn't hide penumbra in the homestuck soundtrack, it was a very prominent leitmotif, and appeared in many major songs of the comic based on its name + tumblr post, penumbra phantasm is more about "between light and darkness" than holy-ness. you can argue that motif was put in THE HOLY in deltarune, but personally, the notes don't line up enough to call it a leitmotif

Homestuck does have a lot of religious motifs, most of the main characters being gods, the MC being a jesus parallel and being named John, the gnostic imagery and theming bursting out the ears, the insane clown posse (makes sense in context), etc.

I 100% agree with the "Egg man is a piece of Gaster" thing, but I love to take it a step further and say he's the Everyman, Gaster's connection with the physical game world, his connection to, well, every man. It only makes sense as the only things we know about Everyman is we SEE HIM BEING TORN TO PIECES in the Amalgam fight, and he's scattered all over the light world (and Dark World with his eggs), wants to "help himself" (Gaster "prime"), and he's referred to as "A Man". 20:20 This is something that's been driving me crazy recently: the fact that, though neither of them really have proper back-and-forth dynamics with Ralsei, that Berdly is absolutely willing to talk to him, while Noelle's only instances of ever acknowledging him are her thinking he looks like Asriel, and hearing the Roaring speech at the end. Berdly mainly just denigrates Ralsei (calling him a lackey) or doesn't believe him (when told that Queen's manipulating him), but they do actually talk. I'm not surprised by this; Berdly doesn't really seem the type to immediately put that much thought into someone he just met whose approval he isn't seeking. I don't think Noelle ever actually says a word about or to him (iirc the familiarity thing is a thought bubble? Been a bit so I might be wrong), on the other hand, which is SO interesting to me for someone who actually knows Asriel. You'd think she'd offer some indication as to what she thinks about him, or even offer a single word his way when she joins the party, but she just... kinda talks past him, and Ralsei's not much better, likely due to his own ingrained subservience to the lightners. And though it's plausible, I'm absolutely not of the camp that she's just too preoccupied with Susie to talk to him at all. To me, at least, there has to be more of a justification for why she acts like that. I just have no idea what it is.

Your game idea sounds awesome and I would love to play it!! Speaking from experience - first time game-development is a challenge, but so incredibly rewarding. The most important thing is that however much you know can be enough, and you will always be learning more as you continue. Many people can get tripped up at points or struggle to even start because they think they don’t know enough about how to make a certain aspect. But you don’t need to know everything when you begin, and you won’t know everything when you finish. Search engines, forums, trial and error - and especially shitty, terrible attempts at code - are all valid and don’t make you any less of a game dev. You may already know this, but Undertale is actually something of a poster child for “you don’t have to be a good programmer to make a good game”

I may be mistaken, though I'm fairly sure the theory you were recalling at 2:00 was Oblivion Theory by Wandydoodles. The basic premise is that the Roaring Knight is a re-incarnation of Chara through the Goner Vessel, with their motive being-- in simple terms-- to create an endless journey of escapism for you to experience. Wandy's written an entire Google Document about the theory that should be somewhere on his KZbin channel (and probably Twitter but I don't have an account there so I can't say for certain), so I'd say that it's very much worth giving a read! Definitely one of the best pieces of UT/DR fan content I've seen.

In the letter too this character mentions not remembering if they were supposed to “save themself” which could be interpreted as a character who is literally shattered and is used to communicating with various forms of themself Having Gaster be shattered into multiple forms rather than there just being multiple different third dimensional beings (like the egg man and friend) roaming around makes quite a bit of sense

a little late to the party here but as to what you said around 26:58, i think that could be a result of ralsei being the one relaying the prophecy - he believes himself to be the prince, and wants to be, so the image he relays to kris/the player is one in which he treats it like a foregone conclusion that he is i dont think lancer is the prince, but the imagery of the prophecy that we see in chapter 1 shouldn't necessarily be given that level of canon weight imho

On the whole *the prophecy isn’t specific to KSR thing* I sorta think that the Prince From The Dark is meant to be Ralsei, and that since kris is presumably the only human nearby to fill that role, I sorta like the idea that Susie’s role is much more replaceable, which might tie in with her whole *not-liking-the-prophecy-or-at-least-not-fully-believing-it thing* and how she might get insecure later the more she believes in it. Relating to Ralsei being able to go to other dark worlds: my theory is because he is from the Grand Fountain and the Grand Fountain can house other darkners without them petrifying, it works the opposite way, where Ralsei can go to other dark worlds no problem.

Oh it's been so long I can't actually remember if I asked a question for that or what it would be, I do vaguely remember the post though and it's good to see you pulled through. Yeah that animatic fell by the wayside but I'll try and rectify that. As far as Deltarune stuff goes, there's definitely something to Rouxls Kaard with the shattered gaster thing and the whole egg in wing dings is the movement pattern of a knight. If there's a puppet that gaster ends up speaking through my bet would be him, if he isn't just bait for something else. Ship tier list is cool, you're right Deltarune is really lacking a love triangle sub plot. On the topic of platonic relationships in shipping thoug, they feel underutilised to me in shipping in general, but maybe that's just the aromantic in me talking. And yeah hopefully Ralsei learns to appreciate the other darkners in the time where Kris and Susie aren't there. (Noelle gets a pass only because Snowgrave is such a contrast) They're people too. And yeah I think people overplay Kris' resentment in general, whether that be to Ralsei or the player. Oh and I feel the same about Breath of the Wild, I did finish it but finding the time for Tears of Kingdom has been surprisingly difficult. Sorry if this comes off as a bit rambly, it's late here and I can't be bothered to go back through the video and clean my thoughts up. I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever you do next.

Just gonna put this out here but couldn't Kris ripping their soul out even before possesion be an allegory for self-harm and dissatisfaction bordering to disgust of their condition as human? After all, the key difference between a human and a monster resides on their souls. So maybe Kris could have put most of the blame for how inadequate they feel on their soul. Maybe they even went as far as trying to live without it for some time, hoping it would make them more "monster-like" and that's why they're used to moving without it.

I have a take about gastor that could somewhat explain his lack of any reaction to darkner names. Gaster is for sure. Very scientific minded. And would know that darkners are a fictional beings. Regardless of how "real" you think they are. At the end of the day. Lancer is just a playing card. You might have a soft spot for your favorite objects. Maybe they mean something to you. But to a scientific mind like gastor. It's just a playing card. Honestly I can see where he is coming from. I do not get attached to any deltarune characters. On a personal lvl. They aren't real. That doesn't mean I don't like or respect the characters, writing, and message. But I will not see them as a real person. Because they aren't. So yeah to gastor he might think they are amusing but don't hold them in same regard as "real people" do. Aka lightners

I think Deltarune’s commentary on your control over Kris will be specifically the choices you made within that control, kris is very consistently uncomfortable with or has constant choices to reject Ralsei and I think if you really push Ralsei and Kris being weirdly romantic you’ll get called out about that

I don't necessarily agree with the Ralsei thing but I do agree that the choices are important in that way, like killing Berdly/doing Weird Route.

@@Yuti640 to be fair, ralsei hug does calm kris down, and it does change the mood of the situation, and kris does jokingly fake propose to ralsei, and also in the skip chapter 1, ralsei gets the white ribbon equipped as well. but i REALLY dislike the idea that you need to bully ralsei "because that's what kris would want"

The thing that interest me about kris being non binary, particularly their pronouns is that kris is quite literally possessed so they are a they. And thet might be intentional.
