We were living FDR’s Policies back than. there were no poor people nor homeless. 32 other Industrialized Nations adopted those Policies from our Nation 80 Years ago, and they still live very successfully with them. We had them for about 50 yrs. Than Republs under Reagan did away with those Policies. WHY? Sometimes when our way is blocked, it is because PROTECTION is in place. One Saturday morning, my three year old sobbed and begged me to not go into the office. I listened and stayed home. Nooooo Susan - what we need to do now is to cultivate the ability to thrive in the midst of uncertainty. We SHOULD NOT just give up on the vision of Kamala taking office to avoid possible disappointment in January! That is not how we manifest it. It’s just a way to protect our ego based attachment to the outcome. Instead of turning away with resignation, we should hold space for the result we want - while also taking action like you stated, which is essential. As a Nihon Japanese jujutsu instructor of many years, I can tell you that your guides are right. The reason for this is because it is one of a group of grappling arts that requires students to be what may be uncomfortably close to another practitioner or student. Brazilian jujitsu is a ground grappling practice that teaches beginners not to be afraid of close contact because it teaches how to either not get into such a space or teaches you how to use various techniques to get away from an attacker. Think about this: The original, ancient Japanese jujutsu that Brazilian jujitsu comes from was developed over hundreds of years for small people. It is not a competitive martial tradition - it is not a sport. It’s meant to teach you not to get attacked. It’s meant to help you learn how to use small things in your environment to protect yourself. It’s meant to teach you that you are stronger than hate. So, while we do teach you to punch and kick, any jujutsu practice is about awareness, balance and joints. The reason for the latter is that they can’t be strengthened like muscles can, so they’re vulnerable. Jujutsu teaches you that finger joints, wrists, elbows etc etc are incredibly easy to attack - for us! This is super do-able for people of any age and any ability level. It can be done from a car, in a chair, in tight spaces, with injuries etc etc. We try not to do some of this with kids because their joints are still growing. So, start now by looking at what you carry with you or have on you all the time. Pens, phones, scarves, shoes, remote controls, mascaras, dog bones or leashes are all things you may have with you and that you can learn to use differently. And what the guides said is a beautiful thing: the smallest woman or kid can take a man down. My husband and I have trained together for decades and he is 230 lbs and 6 foot of muscle and skill and I can take him or any guy down. I just can. (Think of this: the biggest guy cannot strengthen his upper lip, his sternum, his nose, his collarbones, the tops of his feet, his fingers, wrists, groin or other areas and joints. To prove it to yourself, take a middle finger knuckle and noogy it into your temple, jaw joint in front of your ear, top of your hand or foot. Take your upper lip between your thumb and forefinger, pinch it and pull down and twist it. Gently please, lol. The point is the pain. So, if this is something you’d like to do, depending upon where you are, it’ll be relatively easy to find BJJ schools or classes. Self defense or self protection classes are often offered at community centers or through various church groups if that’s your vibe. Start with self defense course or seminar through a BJJ school, unless you can find a Nihon Jujutsu school, (since we don’t compete folks are less interested. We don’t compete - this is more serious stuff, and we want to keep our practice partners healthy and whole. Another option is a Classical Chinese kung fu or Bagua school. They will teach “chin-na” which follow the same principles as BJJ or Nihon jujutsu or Aikido. An assignment: next time you go out, please don’t look at your phone unless you’re called. Otherwise, your assignment is to observe other people around you. Look to see how many people are not looking at whom they’re with or distracted by texting or listening to anything with earphones or earbuds. Keep in mind that bad guys or angry people will look for folks who are distracted to attack or pick on. Awareness of others helps with self awareness. After you do a seminar or class, if you feel comfortable with the environment, take a few classes. The only way this works is with practice - with other people, with different sized people, or of different ages. Karate, Taekwondo, and other striking arts will not teach you how to train in close quarters until you’re an advanced student. This is a generalization, but that’s been my experience. I appreciate Susan Lynn sharing this information. To often, sadly, we get students coming to us after they’ve been attacked, suffered loss, or been horribly traumatized. In those instances, we have to work hard not to re-traumatize someone who is looking for help. If this is something you’d like to explore let Susan Lynn know. We can all do this together if you like. Maybe Zoom classes or something? If you’re in the Detroit area or surrounds, let her know that too. Get a group and I’ll come to you. If there are other practitioners, let Susan know this too. Bottom line: self protection is benevolent. This is how I teach. It’s not meant to be horrific, but to strengthen you at your core with Spirit, and must be benevolent to do that.
