It's been a month since I broke my iPhone and switched to a flip phone. Life is a bliss ever since ! Was spending almost 4h every day on iPhone, and it seemed like there is no life without it until that day. Now I give a lot more of my time to my kid and getting outdoors and staying active. Social networking on laptop (FB, Twitter,WhatsApp) is just fine. Navigation and Camera are two main things I'm struggling with presently, for which I need a dumbed down smartphone sometime in future .

My husband and I did this to our smartphones 2 months ago after switching to flip phones to detox for 6 months! We set it up so he has the password to my screentime and I have the password to his. So if I need my "smartphone" capabilities back, I have to clear it with him and we talk through if there is another way. It is great for accountability and it has improved our communication in our marriage so much!

I see your point behind this and how it may benefit some, but I don’t think I could ever put myself in a position to have to ask my spouse to use my own stuff. We also work opposite schedules and we use a lot of technology in this house. It’s also our main way of how we do our homeschooling and while it could be a benefit for us to unplug more often, doing it that way just wouldn’t work for us.

I needed to hear the bit where you said we don’t need to document EVERYTHING. It’s okay not to get pictures of every little moment. I’ve caught myself countless times watching my child through my phone while taking videos/pictures more than right in front of me. Makes me so sad.

Since deleting a ton of apps from my phone (removing social media completely), my screen time is about 50mins - 1hr as opposed to the 7 hours it used to be. It's SO easy to spend all day on our phones. My mental health has completely transformed. Highly recommend and thanks for all your phenom tips Madisun!

👏👏👏 I am a teacher, social media created WAY more problems than it was worth. I am 30 now, but at the time my career started I noticed how little I actually thought about my privacy. They were always trying to look me up, which is normal, until my phone gave away my location at a CVS. A student followed me into the store just to say hi, but this was a huge eye opener for me. I quit it all in 2018. I didn't even know about Covid until a week before Spring Break!

I deleted every app from my phone except the phone, text, and calendar and on the weekends I put my phone on Do Not Disturb and only allow selected friends and family to be able to get through. When I need to know the weather, I just look outside. I've started buying physical music again like CDs and Vinyl. I read really long books. I do repair work around the house, I build stuff. I'm trying to get my brain back

This video is so relevant for everyone. I am inspired to change some things on my phone to limit use. Not taking pictures or videos of everything is so important. Plus now, because of that, I am dealing with so much digital clutter. Also, not putting family as wallpaper- wow. It does make the phone seem so much more important than it is- like a family member ! That was an amazing point. Thank you for making this!!!

I just found your channel last week. I have been wanting to minimize and declutter our home. But always get so discouraged and overwhelmed. Especially with 3 kids it is hard. But since watching your channel I have a new determination to get it done this time! Thank you for all of your kind words and putting things so simply. I have decluttered enough clothes a few days ago to fit in my trunk. I have a suv with 3 rows and seats and had to put the third row down there was so much to donate! So everything will go to someone in need and not trash. It is so exciting! I can feel my anxiety ease already! I’m looking forward to spending more time making memories instead of worrying about picking up the house and cleaning so often. Slow living is my absolute dreams. I only wish I I hadn’t wasted so much time before really going through with this journey.

Love this! I don’t have Facebook or Twitter and I got rid of Instagram at the beginning of 2020 (it was the best decision ever) I just watch KZbin but I delete the app when I find myself getting too addicted. I also try to stay off my phone as much as I can during the day so I’m not distracted and I get the things done that I need to. It definitely takes discipline though

I’m going to give this a go. Thanks Madi for the tips! 🤩 my screen time is too high for my liking and somehow it’s hard to believe I spend that much time on my phone, even though I’ve gotten off Instagram. I was going to buy a light phone but I didn't want to lose out on Google maps and Spotify. I don't want my kids to look back and remember me constantly being on my phone. Needed this. I have long come off social media but after watching I have set timers for KZbin and pintrest (my downfalls) and my daily screen time for 2 hours, as I too listen to Spotify alllooot. My phone will now go to sleep at 9pm and wake up at 7am through a setting. I am constantly saying to my partner that we should get old school 'brick phones' again! But living in a different country to my family, WhatsApp makes things so handy! I truly do feel like my phone is dumbing me down. Great video thanks 💕 sending love and light x

A while ago, I noticed that I felt a spike of anxiety every time I opened Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and once I started scrolling, it was hard to stop, and I always left feeling crappy. So I too decided to delete all three apps! Every once in a great while, I log into Instagram via my computer to catch up with friends, but I set a timer to limit the scroll time, and with the apps off my phone, the temptation is no longer in my pocket 24/7. I'm never going back!

I dumbed my smartphone months ago - no social media apps, games, etc., just basics... 🙂 The internet turns off at night as well (to stop me from "accidental" googling in bed). You are so right about the camera / constantly taking photos with a phone - my weak point... I have a big/heavy DSLR mirror Nikon (for 13 years already!!!), but carrying it around is just soooo impractical... I need to think about it 💚... BTW, there is a great book about the media/technology impact on our lives: "Stolen focus" by Johann Hari.

Really loved this video. As someone who has been thinking of making the switch to a Light Phone for the better part of a year now, and realizing I can't live with certain apps (I shoot photography and videography, so the ability to on the spot track sun movement is essential. Thank you Photopills) for my business I couldn't make the jump. One thing I did do was delete all social media and apps that don't add value to my day to day. But also I switched my screen to grey scale to make the phone less interesting to play with. I am going to dabble with the restrictions you outlined because I still have access to a few apps without it and I don't want that. I haven't watched any of your videos before and while the content is exactly what I was looking for, the audio (especially after going inside) was tough. Should have asked the neighbors to cut down trees later ;)

I went through the same thought process as you. I was about to buy a light phone, but it wasn't practical for me, the main thing was that you can't have group chats which I need for school and work. I have had the light phone for a year and a half and it was totally worth it. At first, I considered selling my iPhone and buying a camera. Instead, I kept it for a camera and for a couple things at work. Sometimes I even misplace the iphone because it’s so secondary 😂 It’s so nice to be able to put the iPhone and computer away and just leave the house with no “what ifs” in my purse. It’s just not an option to even reload an app with the light phone. The light phone has had some great updates lately too. It now has Directions and photo forwarding. But I’m not trying to convince you to switch back haha 😂. This hack for simplifying your smartphone is very clever! My partner has the sunbeam flip and loves it. :)

My smartphone is mostly my kitchen table phone now. Just for a cooking-timer, banking (mostly balance check) and tracking mail and packages. For the rest i have a dumb phone and it fits better in my pants too. Whats-app is often used for company communications and that is on my laptop. (Mostly for the evenings.) Email also only on my laptop. But the problem is just social media. If you delete that then your smartphone is not so hot anymore.
