Enjoyed the video, Scott. I don't have and have never heard some of the albums you mentioned, like Mass, Circus of Power and XYZ, so I made a list. I must admit, pop-metal just might be favorite genre. KISS is my all time favorite band after all. Recently, been spinning the debut albums from Heaven's Edge (another Philly band), SteelHeart (great vocals from Michael Matijevic), and Firehouse. Love Ratt! Especially Out of the Cellar. Dirty Looks - Cool From the Wire and Turn of the Screw are both fantastic. Wish I had them on vinyl, I've got them on cassette and I don't have a cassette player. UGH!

Bon Jovi said back in the day that Venom is a kind of band that gives heavy metal a bad name. I love Venom and think it's exactly the opposite. It's crap like Bon Jovi that gives metal a bad name, if anything. Runaway and Wild Is The Wind are good songs though. TNT and White Lion are great hair metal bands. Twisted Sister is one of the best bands ever, but I consider them heavy metal, although Love Is For Suckers fits right there in that hair metal category. Great video as always.

Yes! Not as familiar with the first ones you showed but this is where I lived for a while. I never understood the different band camps either. House of Lords, Dangerous Toys, Too Fast For Love Lethur!! There are only two records I'd pay up for and that's one of them. Nice DAD pressings. Nothing like a good round of hair metal records on the turntable!!

Every time I see that Lethur Records pressings it's always in the $200 plus range. It's crazy. I'm 39, and I JUST got over my hair metal hatred, haha. I just bought Shout at the Devil about 6 months ago. I've learned to appreciate Ratt and Dokken too. Twisted sister was always the biggest exception for me, but they've always been in a class of their own. I'll have to check out Dirty Looks, sounds like my wheelhouse.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about Twisted Sister. Their first two albums were pure metal! Nothing poppy about them. It wasn't until Stay Hungry that they went for the more pop influenced sound, but even that record has some killer tracks. If you check out Dirty Looks I highly recommend Cool from the Wire or In Your Face. Both are killer IMO.
@GroundZeroSalem7 жыл бұрын
Sweet, thanks for the recommendations and for replying. Personally, I think Stay Hungry is a scorcher. Maybe a little bit more radio friendly (The Price) but tracks like Burn in Hell and Street Justice are legit rippers. A lot of people see it as this huge departure, but I don't. I don't see it like a AJFA / Black Album kind of scenario at all.
@blackstarvinyl63757 жыл бұрын
Scott i so agree with your opening rant. it's all hard rock/metal! i love it all from pop to thrash and a lil death stuff here and there. I've noticed the death i kinda been fading away from as i get older. if you grew up in philly as i did... do you remember the old empire rock club? where Cinderella, Britny Fox, Heaven's Edge and many more local bands like Teeze, Pyramid, White Fox all got their starts. also a lot of the larger acts played back in the hey day. man i must have seen 500+ shows there. still miss that place. you picked some killer stuff. Guardian is killer i love Their debut album the best. Crawley's voice was killer. i like Rowe's too but they kinda threw a lil more bluesy vibe in. even more so on Their third release Miracle Mile. Also my fav Mass album its very stryper influenced to me with obvious reasons since Michael produced it.. and Don Dokken produced that first XYZ album if my memory serves me right. your the first person I've seen. pull out dirty looks... great band. and cool from the wire is their masterpiece in my mind. loved this vid man. \m/

I grew up in New Jersey but I use to go to see shows in Philly and NYC all the time. We'd go to the Tower in Philly and L'Amour in NY. Big shows as the Spectrum or go to the Meadowlands in Jersey. It was a great time growing up with metal in the 80's in the East Coast. So many great bands. Some that got huge, like Twisted Sister, Cinderella, Anthrax. Some that deserved to but didn't like TT Quick, Heathens Rage, Uncle Sam, etc. I'm anxious for the Guardian - Fire & Love vinyl coming out on Retroactive this summer. It is actually as good as the debut, even if it's a little different style-wise. Dirty Looks is another Philly/NY band that should have been big. I discovered them when they put out their In Your Face album. The were still in Philly at that point and I was living in Rochester, NY going to school. Not too long after that the band moved up to Rochester and became local favorites there too. Then they got their big record contract FINALLY but I guess they were just a little behind the curve because they quickly fell off the map of popularity. Still, Henrick was a rock legend IMO. He is missed.

Respect for opening rant... When I started listening to metal in the eighties there were bands you liked and bands you didn't like and that was it. No hate, some things just weren't your taste, and that was cool. And yes a lot of bands were metal then who somehow aren't metal now, and that's a shame cos there's a load of great music out there people are missing for the sake of a perceived "label".
@nolifetilmetal14 жыл бұрын
Could not have said it better. I cannot ever remember even one metal fan I grew up with saying, "Ratt isn't metal, that's just hard rock." These days you have people arguing that Judas Priest and Saxon are "not heavy metal but just hard rock". Haha!

the first XYZ album is great.even the followup which was ignored is a solid slab. Circus of Power was another solid one. I spun their call of the wild 12 in ep recently. "hair"/sleaze metal from the 80s is directly linked to the 70s and bands like Slade,Goddo, Starz ,Angel and most importantly 70s Kiss and Aerosmith so ive always been very open to the stuff that came out of the late 80s and there were some really good albums from the period which youve showed. solid choices you poser. haha. cheers brother.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
The XYZ follow-up is brilliant. Wish I had that one on vinyl to show. I have the CD. I totally agree that the hair/sleaze metal was directly connected to bands like Slade, Starz, etc. and yes I think Aerosmith was a HUGE influence on that sound. After I filmed this video I thought of a bunch of other bands I should have included. Oh well.
@noisespektrum54167 жыл бұрын
the scene early on was quite good (early to mid 80s). when they started going for the glam look but were musically more rooted in early 80s Traditional metal . Now they call it "Heavy Glam" or "Flash Metal" i.e Icon, King Kobra, Early Crue, Wrathchild. Then poison came along and that all changed. haha

what really sad is that glam metal got mocked a lot because it wasn't serious like other metal subgenres. sex, party, having fun, and going crazy was consider silly and stupid to some overly serious metal fans. glam or hair metal was more mainstream like arena rock or AOR. just liken what the garbage rap and auto-tone pop is today. hair metal did fall in the same realm as hard rock. you got the usualy power ballads, songs about heartaches, getting drink and wild, chasing chicks, and the usual songs about sex that isn't too over the top like Rap artist did. many rappers focus more on porn reference Le. 2 live crew and btw, baby got back don't count cos I think song was a joke LOL

@Lyrici177 жыл бұрын
I am certainly guilty of using "hair metal". That being said, when I use the genre tag, I'm not using it with a negative connotation. I'll try to switch my lexicon to "glam", but it probably won't take, haha.... That Joshua is killer. "Only Yesterday" is an immediate favorite (a guitar solo 15 seconds into the song? Yes, please! Plus when I still get another one later.). The vocals are right on, and they have the perfect amount of keyboard...... "Stars" is an amazing single. I mean, half of the song (long version is best) is soloing.... Good stuff, thanks!
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh, I don't really mind "hair metal" all that much. It just really doesn't describe the music like pop metal, glam metal or the like do. I love Stars. It's a fun song. Have you heard the Shout track I was talking about? It has a similar vibe with the extended guitar solo.
@Lyrici177 жыл бұрын
I hadn't heard it before you mentioned it in the video, but then listened to it. It didn't quite grab me in the same way. I liked a lot of the soloing, but the song itself just okay for me. Oh well, can't win them all. Thanks!

I never took offense on word hair metal, somebody decided to call it that and it stuck. Sometime in the late 90's there was an article on a music magazine where the writer was writing some put down on hair metal. He emphasized the use of term "hair metal" how it was the most ridiculous thing ever and the readers and fans of hair metal wrote back to him and told him many words that they used when wanting to have a laugh. I thought there many simply brilliant, the ones that stuck in my mind were "pantyhose metal, spandex metal and as a reference to Rudolf Schenker "Moustache metal" It was a great reminder how the fans are aware of the funny/ridiculous side. And also the willingness to overlook such things and enjoy the music. Where does this feeling of Cinderella is awful comes from? I don't recall reading anything where they would have been associated with the pop metal side of Poison and Warrant and yet i have seen a few videos where the vc guys have been defensive toward them. I dig the first three Cinderella albums. Very glad to see my fave DAD album Riskin' It All. I don't see it having anything to do with metal, but it's brilliant, love it. Pasi
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
I am not really offended by term, I just think it makes no sense. It doesn't describe the music, it describes a look that embodied most 80's bands. LOL! The term was definitely a derogatory term coined to belittle the music, saying it was more about looks than music. As for the Cinderella thing, I've seen it on Facebook and especially on the various heavy metal discussion boards. Guys into the heavier side of metal tend to put all those bands into the "poser metal" category. Another stupid and derogatory name. I thought all four Cinderella albums were great. Their last might even have been their best. Did you not like that one?
@6758pasi7 жыл бұрын
I have never heard anything off of Still Climbing. I didn't even know it existed until 6 years ago when Cinderella was about to come over here for a gig and i decided to do a bit of search to find out what they had done. Closest to seeing it live was when you showed it sometime ago.

No more division. And was so cool. If you like, you listen. If you dont like, you dont listen. Every New metal band that appear, was welcome. I remmeber to look for new bands in the thank you area at the vinyl cover. Great times.

Mine favorites is mötley crue, WASP, twisted sister, ratt, europe, van halen, since 80's already! Wasp is for me most important ever, in glam/shock metal band scene, debut is my favorite definitely!
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
WASP's debut is still my favorite from them as well, although their last album I thought was stellar. I like Crue's first two albums. After that they are a bit spotty. Girls Girls Girls was a very weak album. Van Halen's first four albums were game changers. The debut in 1978 blew doors open. Twisted Sister were never really a glam band, at least not at first. Their first two albums were pure metal, and even speed metal at times. They dressed to offend, not to be pretty. However by the time their Come Out and Play album was released they were following the trends of glam metal and totally lost their edge.

I also hate the moniker hair metal. Just look at the bands that you showed...Cinderella are more of a blues metal/hard blues band, Circus of Power were a mixed bag of styles, but more of a biker metal band, then there is Crue. While I think that they created 80s glam metal, there sound varied with every albums. Their first two were more heavy metal, then with Girls, they went straight sleeze, then a mix of al of their styles with Dr Feelgood. Love the Dangerous Toys...really need to find that bad boy on vinyl. What's the deal with Mass. They are a band that I really dig, but they are a band that had been claimed as Christian metal, but I don't hear that in their music at all. Anyway...fun video.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
YES! My point exactly. Like I said though, even NWOBHM is a tough description, though that was more of a description of a movement than a particular style of music. Raven didn't sound like Def Leppard didn't sound like Venom, etc. Someone told me that the second and third Dangerous Toys are being released on vinyl sometime soon. Like we've been saying, it's impossible to keep up with it all, but I wouldn't change it. Love the vinyl revival. I think Mass got the "Christian metal" tag because of their name, which I suppose sounds religious, the fact that they worked with Micheal Sweet and they have a handful of songs that are spiritual such as Holy One. They have just as many songs about girls and other topics, like Pedal to the Metal! Just a bad-ass rocker!
@Greatshortfilms17 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh, now we're talking, hahah! Mass is great! Only heard of them a couple of years ago! Never been a big fan of the Circus Of Power album. Maybe I should give it a listen again. Shout is great. Love the big hooks with big choirs! Nitro is sooooo over the top! Just needed a better production. Motley Crue is a must when you talk about 80's pop metal. Still need that Leather Records pressing. Yes, my favourite Cinderella album. Not as bluesy and more straight forward. Dirty Looks had a Danish singer. Great rock'n'roll. Another 80's classic. Britny Fox was also cool. I actually like their third album with Tommy Paris the most. XYZ is one of my favourites from that era. Always thought they sounds alot like Dokken. Guardian is great. Love Fire & Love and can't wait for the vinyl release ;-) Joshua is one of the bands I only discovered within the last couple of years. Love Rob Rock. House Of Lords is still releasing great albums and James Christian still sings amazing. Saw them live last year. It was amazing. Never been a huge fan of Helix. Okay albums but not amazing. Dangerous is just a fun rock'n'roll band. Pissed is getting a vinyl release soon. D:A.D. was more like a Cowpunk on their first couple of albums. I am a little dissapointed that you couldn't remember where they were from :-( Great video

Yes, you are the king of this style of music. There is so much I love that I don't have. That's why I enjoy your channel so much. Sorry I got D.A.D. mixed up. I couldn't for the life of me remember what country they were from. Happens all the time to me when I turn the camera on, I forgot information. Yes, Henrick was Danish. I spoke to him on the phone not long before his death. We had a wonderful conversation about music and faith. He sent me a little thank you note and a CD after that. I still have that hand-written thank you note. I'm still waiting on your Holy Soldier record before I send out your package. As soon as I have it in my hands, I'll be shipping it along with the other stuff in the pile I've been holding for you.

Cool video. I loved your little monologue. I agree 100% about the term hair metal. Never heard that term in the 80s. I also can't stand the revision of 70s metal as you mentioned. That "Motörhead isn't a metal band" garbage. Doesn't make sense to me. Ha. Circus of Power, that's a moldy oldy. I have their first two lps kicking around. Cheers, Jon

Hey John, the whole "metal didn't exist in the 70's" argument is one that gets me on my soapbox like few others. Haha! I mean, I was a kid in the 70's but I got into heavy metal at an early age. I still have magazines from the 70's asking the Question "Is Heavy Metal Dead?" "Can Heavy Metal Survive the 70's" LOL! Seriously. Then I have magazines from 1980 talking about "The Rebirth of Heavy Metal". How could their be a "rebirth" or a "New Wave of Heavy Metal" in the 80's if there was a first wave in the 70's. Just makes no sense to me. History revisionism at it's finest. See, I told you it gets me on my soapbox. LOL! I only have the first Circus of Power on vinyl. I don't think I've ever even seen the second on vinyl. Show it sometime in a video. Thanks for watching John

i actually do like these types of bands but (like you) i lean a lot more towards the more metallic, gritty types. the ones that took a lot of influence from bands like Judas Priest, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Aerosmith, Nazareth and so on. so bands like Ratt, Motley Crue, Kix, Dokken, D.A.D., Mass, etc.. etc... i did give Dirty Looks a listen last year and very much dug 'em. anyways. great stuff and take care.

@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
Ratt's first full length album was Out of the Cellar but they had an EP before that, much like Queensryche with the EP that came before The Warning. AC/DC and Aerosmith were heavy metal in the 1970's. Compared to today's standards for "heavy", they would not be considered such, but they definitely were in the 70's.

Sounds like we had a similar way of getting into metal. For me it was bands like Ted Nugent, Aerosmith and Kiss, then it was Motorhead, Judas Priest and early Scorpions. From there I started getting into all the 80's bands and even local acts like Twisted Sister. Then speed metal, thrash, death metal...

smfcpthowdy I love the term New wave of British Heavy Metal. That's what it was called all the way back since 79. We called it that as kids in the mid 80s. The metal mags all used that moniker too. It's certainly awkward to say, but pretty darn accurate. I love saying the term "new wob em". Nobody knows what the heck I'm talking about. Cheers Captain, Jon
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
I don't really hate it so much as I think it doesn't describe the music at all. Everyone had hair in the 80's. Shoot, pop artists had big poofy hair in the 80's. Haha! That's what I don't like about it. New Wave of British Heavy Metal describe as whole scene that took over for bands like Sabbath, Priest, UFO, Budgie, etc in Britain in 1979/1980. It's more about a movement than a sound. After all it produced Venom AND Def Leppard. Polar opposites of the spectrum. New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal is all these young new bands whose sound is directly a derivative of the classic 80's sounds, so those tags don't really bother me. "Hair Metal" was created originally as a derogatory name to say that the bands image was more important than the music. To that, I disagree. Too bad I didn't explain it that well on the video. HAHA!
@ANDREWBALLINA7 жыл бұрын
Fantastic vid and just what I was looking for when I searched this topic. I agree with you on the whole "hair thing" and feel this metal genre suits the title Glam/Pop Metal, as that's essentially what it is, a more pop metal sound. Motley Crue are incredible and was the band that helped me discover my favourite type of metal. It was great to see some different bands that don't get mentioned alot, as its given me more bands to check out. Britny Fox, House of Lords and Circus of Power have been added to my list of bands to check out. Great to see Cinderella and Dangerous Toys mentioned, both are great. Have you got anything from Shotgun Messiah and Tesla? Both are great bands.

I'm glad to finally hear someone else say this about the term "hair metal"...it was a derogatory term made up in the 90s to make fun of all 80s rock and metal. I don't think these people are even real music fans...they just want to belong to some dumb "scene" so they have to label and ridicule everything that doesn't fall in line with whatever their scene dictates is "cool" or not. Anyway, I would have added Shotgun Messiah to the list, their first album is amazing

Not a huge fan of labeling music either but the majority of what is referred as hair metal I can't stand . Cinderella is kick ass , first two motley crue are both awesome as well. I never gave Dirty Looks a chance , just because the name , I assumed it was another Poison clone . Take care Scott , happy fourth.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people dismissed Dirty Looks because of their name and the association with acts like Poison, but they were much more of a heavy rock and roll band than that. They had been around since the early 80's and had four albums out before they even got picked up by a major. I highly recommend picking up their Cool from the Wire and/or In Your Face albums if you are at all interested in checking them out. Their singer/songwriter was a rock till the day he died.

Love hearing you go into detail about Shout's In Your Face. I love that end to end, and the song that is made up of tons of short solos is amazing. I love their look, and the way you described it was perfect. That whole album is at least a 9 out of 10. Guardian's Fire and Love I rate on par with In Your Face. Not familiar with Joshua, but just read what you wrote on No Life 'Til Metal, very interesting. If I didn't already have tickets to see April Wine/Trooper here, I would have travelled to see Helix play at a festival south of here. Nice problem to have, but still, sighhhh....Great Edition of What's Spinning...

I think you would like Joshua too. In fact, Ken Tamplin sang on their first album. Wow! You are going to see April Wine and Trooper. That's awesome. I should send you some cash to buy me a Trooper shirt. You'd never find one of those here. Haha! (In fact, I am going to send a package to you soon, I just might send you some cash.) Hope you get to see Helix this summer anyhow. I've met the band, saw them goofing around on stage at at party, but never actually seen them perform a set.)
@blackmorerules7 жыл бұрын
Ken Tamplin is fantastic. Ooooh, a Trooper shirt over an April Wine shirt, BIG STATEMENT! I had a Trooper concert shirt from '78 at one time. Wish I still had it. What is your fave size of shirt, and 2nd fave size. No need to send cash, plus they may not have shirts available. Seems to be hit and miss at times. They better have shirts though! I believe April Wine is headlining. In Canada, Trooper may have sold more records than April Wine, but I'd think worldwide, April Wine would have sold more. Just a guess though.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
Well April Wine shirts show up from time to time. Trooper shirts NEVER show up in the U.S. Frankly I'd wear a shirt by either band as I love 'em both. I wear a Large or XL. Prefer Large but can wear either. What size do you prefer cause I have one coming your way as well.
@blackmorerules7 жыл бұрын
The only April Wine shirt I've seen is mine. Missed marketing opportunity! Yup, I will beeline it to the merch table for shirt action. I like small, then on up from there. There had better be shirts at the show. It takes place in a month and a half of so.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
Small? Ok. Thanks. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a ton of April Wine shirts. I guess I just assumed they would be easier to find since they are so much more popular than Trooper, at least in the U.S.

I also dont like the hair term, never did. I think it came out with the internet era. Before some of those bands like CINDERELLA BRITNY FOX we call them glam metal because their makeup. DIRTY LOOKS Sleazy metal and bands like MASS hard&heavy. Only good albums you showed.
@bipbopboom7 жыл бұрын
holspa metal I'm not sure, but it seems like a term VH1 or MTV would've came up with in the mid nineties. It feels like a "put down" term. I think whoever coined that term had a disdain for the music. Jon
@holspa7 жыл бұрын
Yes Jon, could have been for the first time on VH1 or MTV. I hear it in the 2000s, but i only had MTV from 1988 till around 1994/1995, and VH1 years later for a couple of years. YES, its not a respectful term at all.
@nolifetilmetal17 жыл бұрын
It's exactly what it was. Music that was all about looks and had no substance or talent. Same with "butt rock " and now "dad rock" to describe bands like Slayer and Megadeth. LOL! It's just us old guys complaining about a lack of respect for something we hold in high esteem. Still, when I was a teen in the 80's we didn't make fun of the bands from the 60's and 70's. We knew those were the roots of what we enjoyed.
@holspa7 жыл бұрын
For the haters it was all about the looks, and they said the bands had no talent, but we the fans think totaly different. A lot of talent, its not easy to write songs that still sound so good in 2017, and they were hits, and the guys were only 22 or so when they wrote all those amazing songs. Lot of talent, and drugs, thats for shore.
