I'm hoping that it was in Development Heaven, rather than Development Hell. Hopefully they delayed it because they were enjoying making the game so much that they didn't want to stop
@Nosidda Жыл бұрын
This is why I'm personally not worried. A lot of people who are concerned should watch the series Nintendo released about the games development. It's very clear that the developers enjoyed making BotW, and the passion and joy they expressed on stage when accepting their GOTY award shows how excited they are about Zelda's future. There's clearly a ton of love going into this game. Perhaps the reason it's taking 6 years is because the game just needed that development time, because there's just that much more going into the game. Hell, the entire reason we're getting a sequel at all is because the developers imaginations were so wild for making DLC, that a sequel just made sense. Nintendo almost never makes direct sequels, but most of the time when they do make a direct sequel, it's because the developers weren't done with it yet. They still had ideas that they wanted to express. That's how we got Mario Galaxy 2, and I think that's what's happening here with TotK. Zelda has never disappointed in it's major releases. The closest we ever got to that was Skyward Sword, and even then it's quality of lack of quality is often debated. A disappointment for some, but not everyone. But even then, every other major Zelda release is regarded by a ton of people as legendary. A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, all legends. I see no reason to be worried, especially since the devs seem so passionate about this game and are getting all the time they need to get it right.
@Nosidda Жыл бұрын
@Game Design Andy Just because they're a corporate entity doesn't mean there's absolutely no good things happening there. Nintendo of Japan has proven on multiple occasions that they are far better about good development conditions than most other companies. The devs clearly love what they're working on, you can see it in the interviews that they adore working on these games. Nintendo themselves delayed the release of Animal Crossing New Horizons in order to ensure the devs didn't need to crunch. They just raised the salaries of their Japanese devs by 10%. The executives have cut their own salaries multiple times when times were bad to avoid layoffs. Yes, Nintendo has MANY problems, but it's still worth appreciating the good things about them while criticizing the bad. Yes, the game took 6 years to make. So what? Welcome to the world of game development, take it from someone who has a degree in game design. Games take ages to make, even when you recycle assets. Assets, by the way, that were likely commissioned to outside sources during the original games development as it still took 6 years to make, and now asset flipping likely just means fewer outsourcing rather than faster development. This is especially true if the game is still ambitious. Every developer will tell you that TotK taking 6 years is NOT abnormal, it is normal. Video games are extremely complex, and unless you want the game to release unfinished and buggy, have patience. Zelda games have never released as unfinished and buggy messes akin to Cyberpunk, so why the hell are people so damn worried just because development is taking a bit longer? If anything, asset flipping just means they've been allowed to get more ambitious than last time, hence why it's taking so long. There is zero reason to believe at this time that the long development is due to the game being in development hell aside from people thinking it's taking too long, so that must mean it's in development hell. The team behind this game have managed to release legendary games that were made on extremely tight and stressful crunch, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess come to mind. So why be worried about them taking their time?

A lot of people forget that BOTW was delayed three years and the team couldn't stop thinking of new ideas. Go back and watch the gameplay from 8 years ago and you'll find different Sheikah Towers that don't glow, a magic meter, slightly different shaders, and more of a focus on the Wii U gamepad. So much changed even though it was meant to release a year after the gameplay reveal. They could've just spent that time polishing the gameplay, but instead began overhauling the world and it's mechanics. It's not out of the question that the Zelda Team did the same thing to TOTK. The sky islands might not have been thought of when the first teaser dropped in 2019, leading to more development time.

I thought at the time that maybe the delay had something to do with Elden Ring. They saw just how far the game developers had taken their Breath of the Wild concepts and how many gamers responded favourably to the difficulty, in-depth combat systems and enemy/boss variety and realised that what they had, as fantastic as it most probably was, could be, and probably needed to be refined and elevated even further if they wanted ToTK to make as many shock waves as BoTW did, now that they had a direct competitor. If this was the case the delay could only be a good thing.
@7F0X7 Жыл бұрын
Even if they pushed the release to 2023 as to not compete with Elden Ring, it makes absolutely not sense to push it all the way to May. BOTW came out in March '17, so it would make sense for TOTK to drop in the first quarter of 2023. The fact that they needed the entire first quarter + 2 more entire months is a bad omen IMO. I hope I'm wrong, but I have a bad feeling about this game.
@MilkPridd Жыл бұрын
@@7F0X7 I'm not worried because in my view the difference here is between perceiving their team "needing" until May 2023 vs allowing themselves the opportunity of an additional year of interesting development and content. I don't think it would have been because they didn't want to compete with ER but that ER raised the stakes beyond what they had anticipated. Elden Ring changed the game and did what all open world games that took inspiration from BoTW couldn't up until that point. If i'm correct the Zelda team, having built up enough trust and goodwill through their efforts with BoTW were probably allowed additional time to capitalise on, and cannibalise from the success of Elden Ring. They did say when it was delayed "to make the experience something truly special" they were taking some more time. They've got a first rate track record overall. So there isn't much reason to doubt them. If they were desperately scrambling to cobble together something out of a project that just wasn't working for them they wouldn't have given a solid date for May. This is coming from somebody that was highly sceptical until the last trailer. I feel all the people worried are only filled with despair because of how much BoTW means to them, not because of any objective evidence of disaster and struggle. Anyway, I hope you're wrong too.

Outside of the obvious (crafting, new mechanics, story etc), i think it comes down to them wanting to actually use the power of the Switch since BotW was limited by it being a Wii U port. From what i remember they didn't even decide on making a Switch version till very late in development. Looking at the trailers in comparison to BotW it's pretty clear it looks better. Draw distance is way better along with lighting and such. I think they ended up rebuilding the game to a certain extent so it not only runs better but looks better as well. Of course they have a head start when it comes to the models and the main land mass being laid out. However, if they took the time to tweak the engine and such they would also have to tweak the content they are recycling to go with the upgrades. Personally i feel this is a major reason for the long development time. Sure they had a great starting point but rebuilding that takes a lot of time and can push back other parts of the game they were working on. If this was a new game made to this scale i don't think we would be seeing a release for at least a couple more years. Of course this is all speculation and maybe once the game finally comes out we will get some more insight on what caused the long development cycle. I would also point out that even though the main land mass is being reused they're also changing and adding to that along with making the sky and underground areas. Just my 2 cents. At the end of the day i think they're playing their cards close to their chest since they showed more than they wanted with the BotW trailer. With all that said, i really think we're in for treat when it finally releases.

The Kirby games were made by Hal Laboratories, Paper Mario and Fire Emblem were made by Intelligent Systems, Mario Strikers was made by Next Level Games, Age of Calamity and Fire Emblem Warriors were made by Omega Force, Xenoblade Chronicles was made by Monolith Soft, POkemon Snap was made by Bandai Namco, Metroid Dread was made by Mercury Steam, Mario Party Superstars was made by NDCube. The only Nintendo EPD games that were released since then have been re-releases, Splatoon 3 and smaller games like Switch Sports or Big Brain Academy. Nintendo has been always a very traditionalistic company, my guess is that the work from home switch really disrupted their workflow. The majority of development time on BOTW was used to create the huge interactive world & the handful of mechanics that support it, primarily the dynamic physics system that drives most of the interaction. That being said, the actual content part of the game was very sparse & barebones, as made apparent by the excessive use of copy/paste shrine design & limited enemies/bosses, among many other things. The fact they are taking so long now gives me hope that TotK will be focusing much of this development cycle on having more diverse content, since the engine & other systems are already in place, & can be adjusted with minimal time & effort. Dungeon crafting has often taken the longest time other than primary engine creation & bugfixing in most other previous titles tho. I expect this title will be no different, as uniquely themed dungeons have commonly been the most requested feature for the sequel to have, tho it is possible that they spent the majority of their time making new above ground & below ground areas instead. My guess is they have been doing both actually, since again, with the engine already in place, creating new overworld areas (even relatively massive ones) would still not make sense to have taken six full years, but rather more like half that time even if new assets needed to be created. From everything we have seen, including interpretation of material from leaked artbook images (which is not certain, only speculated!), it seems as though this game will be delivering it's most oft requested additions - that being what looks to be seven more traditional style dungeons (to coincide with seven "tear" images), more enemy diversity (a small handful of which have already been revealed, that being - Gleeok, Redeads or Gibdos, Kargaroks, & what appears to be a new type of fat moblin, & not just a variation of the existing ones from BOTW), & a story that is focused more on the critical events at hand, not just dialog based backstory told through random, assorted memories. IMO, this is what has been taking the developers so long. Essentially, crafting a Zelda game that actually lives up to the quality of it's predecessors & appeases it's old fans who prefer the more classical style of gameplay, while also maintaining & expanding on the modern formula beloved by so many newcomers (& old alike) returning to the series as well.

@@CordeliaWagner yeah, except that big world to explore and interact with has nothing to do in it except fighting the same 3 enemies, do the same boring puzzles (yes puzzles in botw absolutely suck and no having different solutions don't magically make them good when they barely expand upon concepts), collect some korok seeds (that can barely be considered as content). 7:09 _"The Switch has sold over 120 million units. The company would surely want to take advantage of an already massive userbase that they've built up over the years rather than release all the games exclusively to a new console with fewer users."_ Nintendo isn't Capcom or EA. Console manufacturers make their money primarily through licensing fees. The primary job of Nintendo's games isn't to sell games, it's to sell hardware so that publishers like Capcom and EA sell more games on their consoles. Building an install base is their utmost priority, so much so that Sony and Microsoft sell their consoles at a loss. The Switch _has_ sold over 120 million units. But how many more is it going to sell? It's reaching market saturation and it's already 6 years old. Games that sells new consoles are worth far more to Nintendo than games that sell more copies copies but no consoles.
@EndoYoutube Жыл бұрын
Great points! I like the mention of market saturation. Apparently, Nintendo is expecting to sell another 20 million switch units this year alone, which I have no idea how that could be possible unless they discount the price of the device. They mentioned in a shareholder meeting that they have no plans to do that, but I reckon they would say that anyway even if they were planning to do so

My uneducated guess is as follows: Breath of the Wild was originally planned for the WiiU so they started development for it, but since the WiiU was such as failure financially, they alongside made the development of the Switch, and decided that it would be a good to sell it in there as a release title, which they did. Now, they just tweak some minor things for making it functional on the Switch, but they didn't want it to make it TOO much better because, if they did, people would see that the Switch was the better version, ditch the WiiU and furthermore decrease WiiU sales, which they didn't want to do (at the moment). They were limited by the WiiU's capabilities in what they could or couldn't do with the game. Now, what does this have to do with ToTK? Well, ToTK was never planned for the WiiU, it was for the Switch, so they could use all the Switch's capabilities to make it as powerful and innovative as they want it. Yes, they have the assets from BoTW, but the code and how those assets interact with it are totally different due to hardware and software, so they have to remake those as well. Another thing that may or may not have been influential in development is that the popularity of BoTW was so big that they tried to figure out how exactly are they going to surpass (or at least reach) its predecessor's success, because as many have pointed out, they are going to be very disappointed if ToTK doesn't turn out to be the best game of the year. Combine all of this with creative team (having to many ideas for the DLC lead to ToTK) + COVID pandemic = 6 years in development.

I think the major thing is optimization. There is always something u can optimize to make the game run better. This is always something u have to balance out as a Game Dev how long is the Team working on new features and how long optimization. The features we already saw are looking more complicated and seemingly have a broader range of uses. So yeah much was already made but I think they used the time they got from the previous work wisely and focused more on Story, which is one of the things u can criticize about Botw that the Story was a bit Basic if u exclude the Story telling through Level Design and Sound Design which not everybody is willing to interpret what they are seeing or hearing and played every previous Zelda to get the Easter eggs like Lon-Lon Farm for example. Thats probably why they are so hesitant of sharing information, because some crazy People could already figure it out. And I mean Zeltik already made a crazy Loop theory which could actually be true from a 3-min trailer. Third Reason is for Botw they needed a selling point hence the Trailer, but now that everybody knows what they could expect Nintendo wants to keep it a secret as they don't need a selling point any more because of Botw.
