In this video, we will be comparing the last generation 250 two stroke models in the Throwback Two Stroke Garage Build Shootout by Lectron Fuel Systems. This was over a year long bike build project where I completely tore down, refurbed, and rebuilt a 2004 CR250, 2006 KX250, 2006 RM250, and a 2005 YZ250. Yes, that includes engines, forks, and shocks as well. Every piece of the bikes was gone through, inspected, cleaned, and/or replaced. The bikes are "themed" after the 2005 AMA Supercross season.
What do you all think?!
Please leave a comment below and share any experiences you may have with these bikes, which one is your favorite, which one you'd choose to take home, your favorite rider, or your favorite moment from this epic era in supercross and motocross!

2 strokes are the greatest. As someone who grew up in the 80s when racetracks smelled like premix they are true race bikes. Cant believe no one in this test had 250 experience. I grew up riding 250s and skipped 125's. I was starting to race open class - 500s when they cancelled that in the mid 90s.

You’ve got that right! I had a 2003 YZ250 in 2005 after I had a couple CR125’s. That was such an insane bike. Wish I still had it. After that I switched to four strokes. I was young and followed the trend, no denying that they were easier to ride as well!

Great Video Greg. I’m looking forward to the Honda investigation. I am currently doing a 2003 CR250 and exactly the same thing happened. Apparently a sleeve barrel is a no go on the CR, the piston seized in the sleeve. I was panicking at the cost of a barrel as they are silly money on eBay. Turns out the Honda main dealership can get then in a few weeks from Japan £300 🤷‍♂️ easy. Good luck with the next episode 🙏💪

Time for an Open Class shootout next! You can have the usual suspects (CR500 & KX500, YZ490) as well as the KTM500 (or 540...or 550) and the ATK604 4-stroke as well as their 406 2-stroke. Ohlins/Noleen used to make a 360 big bore kit for the YZ250, so maybe something similar to that too thrown into the mix, or maybe a Maico if you can find one...

I feel the same about my 03 Kawasaki KX250 and 03 Honda CR250R. Both still original besides a fatty pipe and r304 shorty on the KX250 and tires. I feel I’m sitting in the KX250 and it is light, easy to turn and flick around like a 125 and I can put both feet down flat. With the Honda i feel like I’m on top of it & doesn’t seem to want to turn like many ppl say. It’s extremely stable but I feel like I need to work corners harder and it’s a little awkward. Love both and won’t sell em. Just got offered 4500 for the Honda yesterday and said no thanks lol

Interesting however nobody pushed these bikes hard enough to really get a sense of what they can and cant do..... When you push these bikes to the edge, the Suzuki definitely is the bike that enters and corners the best - very aggressive point and squirt. The Yamaha's are famous for the front wheel washing out when cornering hard - something the Suzuki will never do. The Honda's corner well, but in whoops are famous for the rear becoming unstable resulting in tank slapping. The Kawasaki is an excellent stable bike all the way around. The final verdict - the Suzuki had the best suspension front rake, wheel base and frame geometry to this day - it is by far the best, most aggressive, go where you point it bike ever built. Thats why you see Travis Pastrona riding RM's.

Too bad on the Honda, killer video nun the less. Iron liners tune a touch richer than plated, the plated cylinder will make more power, and the 03 makes more peak and the 05-07 have better bottom end. The fact they make the Yamaha still and you can get big bores makes it extremely appealing
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nathan! Sucks I couldn't find an 04 OEM cylinder for the Honda at the time of rebuild, hence me having to go with the sleeve. From a ton of comments on the video already, seems like the CRs are not a fan of the sleeve. Lesson learned! That is badass about the Yamaha though which makes it such an appealing option for any two stroke enthusiast these days.

They were definitely close for sure but the zook takes the cake down low, you can feel it instantly. Takes a little bit more oomph to get that YZ to go but once you get it going, hang on, it's a blast.

amazing video effort and bike build effort if it was sleeved and not replated its really hard to get enough piston to bore clearance and proper exhaust port relief. in my testing sleeve vs plating - sleeve 2 hp worse as well when all set up right

Thank you! That's some super valuable information about the sleeve compared to replating. Still need to dive into it, but I'l have to share some pictures with you to see what you think! I would have liked to have gone OEM cylinder, but it already had a sleeve in there that needed work and there were no OEM cylinders available at the time I needed it! Hence the resleeve. Keep you posted!

@@GregHitchko dealing with used bikes is always a challenge. Hopefully it can be fixed relatively cheaply. The other thing to consider is a thermostat specifically for the sleeved motor. The heat transfer from sleeve to cyl is very poor - so the alum doesn’t heat up as much and expand even though the sleeve gets hot.

@@jacobhendrickson8935 The first couple days we took out the Honda before the shootout, it was running rich for sure so we leaned it out a little bit.
