*Heads up:* unfortunately the Apogee Element & Ensemble series has been discontinued since this video 😢Apogee has plenty of other awesome interfaces that I've reviewed (Symphony Desktop, BOOM, Duet 3). But unfortunately at this time (October 2023) there aren't really any audio interfaces out there that take full advantage of Logic's Audio Device Controls. This is lame, and something that needs to change across the board. I *highly* recommend that each of us let audio device developers know that they should support Logic Pro users via this *open API* that Apple offers! Why the heck not?? Based on the amount of Logic screenshots I see in ads and promos (plus talking to companies that contact me), Logic users are a sizeable group. It's time developers provide direct monitoring and control solutions right from Logic Pro. Anyways - that's the scoop. I hope Apogee (or any other company) takes up the mantle of delivering direct control and monitoring.

I had the exact same issues with UA that you did. I didn't like the UA hardware-dependent aspect of their plugins, and I didn't like the fact that I had to bounce back and forth between the UA interface and the Logic interface while working on my projects. I certainly didn't want to go through a whole new learning process to get UA up and running. I've been using an old Apogee Duet for years, and I love everything about it.

On my Mac Pro, I'm using an RME Fireface 400 - drivers are rock solid and mature, legendary reliability, German made On my Macbook Pro, I'm using an Edirol (Roland) FA-101 Firewire interface. NO drivers needed, Mac OS sees it as a Core Audio device, rock solid! Red anodized aluminum, made in Japan, 10 ins/outs I can run both at any buffer, even 32, with 0 issues, perfect timing, as I sync to picture. Both machines running OS Sierra

@johnargosino6218 4 жыл бұрын
@@xoxo-pp7ru umm, really depends on what you mean by "better." If you're referring to the Scarlet mic preamps, maybe they have more character than RME, which are known for just being really flat and neutral, nothing special about them. But since I don't use the mic preamps (I have a separate BAE lunchbox with Neve mic pre and compressor) I only use the RME strictly for getting audio and MIDI in and out of the computer. Also, I don't know how complicated your routing is, but have you ever used RME Totalmix? It is probably the most confusing yet powerful mixer software for RME interfaces. This alone is a reason to use RME interfaces, especially if you score for picture. Just my 2 cents

The new Apogees are a massive step up in quality to their previous interfaces, so depending on what version your Quartet was it might not apply to this interface. I have the UAD Arrow as I just upgraded my computer and wanted a thunderbolt 3 interface. I came from using Apogee ONE which is great and great with Logic so my initial thought was to stay with Apogee and go with the Element 24. Sadly, they have been discontinued so taking my good friend’s recommendation I dove into the UAD world with the Arrow (now labeled as Apollo Solo). I initially wanted the Apollo Twin X DUO but it was too cost prohibitive. I can always upgrade to that later but I absolutely love my Arrow so far. I’m still learning it though and I’m glad to have Luna on board.

Love your channel Chris! I've had the Element 24 for about 2 years now and it's really an amazing interface for Logic Pro X; the Direct monitoring function makes latency a non issue and puts it in another league and the built-in preamps sound great. They're clean but there's more weight and spatial quality to them than other built-in preamps I've used. And of course the converters are excellent. Like you, I didn't expect that I'd use the Apogee plugins so much, but I've been pretty blown away by them. The ModEQ and ModComp are absolute workhorses, up there with FabFilter quality, and the Opto-3A and Pultec EQs are great color options. I've heard some great recordings made with the UAD interfaces but am also not a fan of their proprietary model, however I do respect them as company. But there are plenty of great plugins to be had nowadays and for Logic/Mac Apogee Element is absolutely seamless. Keep up the great work!

This is an excellent episode! Without a doubt Apogee’s integration with Logic is ‘bar none’. I originally wanted an Ensemble, but ended up investing into UAs Apollo Twin Duo.. spoke with engineers from both throughout the years at NAMM, and now I’m stoked to revisit Apogee and mix ecosystems upon the release of LUNA, and the launch of Symphony Desktop... I honestly cannot afford to integrate an x6, let alone an x8.. so I figured pairing an Element 46 with the Symphony Desktop should be the best ‘bang for the buck’ solution for my setup. Apogee is truly the hardware interface of choice with Logic.

I'm new at Logic Pro and sound design, bought a Focusrite Scarlett a few months back. I'm very happy with the ease of use of the Scarlett and qualitywise it's good enough for my amateur recordings. The fact they weren't sold for +800€ was a big selling point for me as a beginner. Maybe when i've got more knowledge about sound design I'll look into a more expensive audio interface and will definitely take a look at the Apogee products.

I had some latency issues with one version of Logic Pro X (or if it was Mac OS) but now I only rarely turn on low latency in Logic. I’ve tried a few DAW’s and Logic is definitely next to Protools. By far the best bang for buck is Logic. Hey we mostly all buy Mac’s for music production and they get it. Thanks for all your videos. Nacho Rondán There are similarities is that regard, but it’s far more economical, to me at least, to have logic and a Mac as opposed to buying every upgrade rollout for your DAW. Plus, it’s a matter of personal preference, I like the format of a Mac better for music applications, but that’s just me.

I went from an Echo Audiofire8 to a MOTU 828 to an Apollo x16. I hear you on the console being an extraneous thing, but honestly the plugins are so good--either no latency when tracking or used when mixing. And so long as the device doesn't break, I think Thunderbolt will be something that will be used for a good long while, or at least supported through dongles. And, for the price of two or three pieces of actual kick-ass analog hardware, you get an interface plus as many very well modeled instances of kick-ass analog hardware as you can run.

Awesome stuff. Thanks for that! I'm super deep into the UA stuff and it's sounds great but the routing issues are making me want to get rid of my interfaces. Ive got tons of inputs and outputs but the UA console is preventing me from using them the way I'd want to. Also, there is no way to use the "software monitoring" within Logic because of the major latency introduced by the UA software. You can't go around using their mixer which has become a real pain in the butt. I'm selling all of it, it's probably great for someone that needs only a couple of monitor mixes and doesn't use that much outboard. I do have a question though. Do you know if the Apogee Symphony I/O mkII has the same intergration with Logic? How many channels can simultaneously be monitored latency free with the "direct" feature? Would it work for 32 channels? Thanks again!

Focusrite isn't for Logic Pro. I don't know how I can get it to work... I had an Apogee and it was 'plug and play' when I set it as the audio device in Logic. But Focusrite doesn't give me any sound at all. It came with an old USB output, but I had change it to an USB C, 'cause my MacBook only has USB C port - is that an issue? I'm so confused and a bit angry that it doesn't work when I have put it to the chosen audio interface in Logic... Can you make a video for dummies on how to connect the 3gen Scarlett to Logic Pro? Plz help out.

Bummed that this Element 24 interface is no longer available (nor the Element 46). They only offer the Element 88 now. Priced accordingly. ($1495.00) lol

I've been trying to record my grand piano with Audient iD14 MK2 and Earthworks PM40. I record it to Logic Pro and listen to it. I'm not loving the sound quality. It comes out very dry and not natural. If I set the gain level higher, I get the clipping issue. If the gain level is lower, it sounds flat and dry. What can I do? How can I get cleaner and more natural sound?

How would you compare the element to the duet 3?

Im really interested in the Apollo duo 3 with Logic I got a new M1 MacBook air, and the form factor and portability is now as important as audio quality. Have you gotten your hands on one of those to test?

Same as me. I have so many very good plugins, so why buy further plugins with a UA Interface, I thought. Nevertheless finally I purchased an Antelope Zen Q with 37 plugins, because the reviews are very good, moreover there was a free Edge Solo mic included.

Hi Chris, Thanks for this helpful guide of the interfaces you had on your 'short list'. I have been using an Apogee Ensemble Firewire for many years, but sadly it won't work with my newest 2018 MacBook Pro (and the latest OS), so I need to choose a new interface for this computer. I noticed that the Element has an older Thunderbolt socket than the newer MacBook Pro USB 3 socket. I'm undecided whether I should wait for Apogee to bring their connections up to date, to match my computer.........I've already had to retire my Ensemble Firewire because of the connectivity issue...... What's your take on this connection difference?

Ah man! Now you've got me thinking about the Apogee but I'm penniless! haha! I'm using the Audient ID 14 at the moment, great sounding as well. It has the same issue, of a stand-alone mixer before Logic. That Apogee right inside Logic is something I've always wanted... From absolutely drenched Ireland! ☘️💪🏽👀👍🏽☘️

Hey Chris, thanks for all the great vids! I upgraded from my duet to the Element 24 last week to go with my new 2020 MBP. I got nothing but constant crackling audio. It worked on my 2012 MBP so I got ANOTHER 2020 MBP today and same thing!! So bummed cuz it’s seems like a great interface. Anyone else had an issue like this?

For me the best is Behringer U-PHORIA UMC402HD. Strictly plug & play with no setup and at an awesome price.
