I carry Hornady’s Critical Duty and Defense based on the gun. Duty for just that, duty sized pistols and defense for the smaller versions. It’s my gunfight and they work in my guns. People who don’t train with their self defense ammo are not really training. Need to make sure those rounds work with your gun. This video helps, but remember test them in yours. Maybe those sharp hollow points don’t feed so good in your gun. Maybe those lower grains don’t cycle all the time. It’s expensive but it’s money well spent if it’s your life you’re defending. But hey, it’s your gunfight. Do you. 🇺🇸

Ya that's where it's good to just suck up the cost and buy a 1000 round case.

Cowboy beard is hands down the best on this channel, explains things so well, kudos, more videos please

Usually the "LE" boxes are just different packaging from the other off the shelf box. Other than that it's the same
@billshields1718Ай бұрын
Literally the first video I've ever seen where federal hst wasn't perfect in expansion
@SheepdogResponseАй бұрын
We were honestly surprised as well. It possibly could be because we were shooting from a shorter barrel and it didn't get enough velocity.
@billshields1718Ай бұрын
@SheepdogResponse thanks for the great work yall do 👍
@eriklambert3809Ай бұрын
Same
@MikeSwartzАй бұрын
It would be interesting with a 4+" barrel, like a VP9, to test these again and see what's different.
@desertcrimedoggАй бұрын
Good stuff, look at old black talon, now ranger. Shot a guy with 380 rd it was small going in big out
@desertcrimedoggАй бұрын
Also look at full copper hp with no lead for short barrels to get velocity.
@toddjordan9708Ай бұрын
Speer gold dot 124+p is probably the best all-around self-defense and duty use ammo on the shelf. We have been using it for years, and its performance through barriers and clothing doesn't hamper its performance at all.
@nikos6220Ай бұрын
The statement that the Federal HST did not expand is likely incorrect based on the pattern in the gel
@SheepdogResponseАй бұрын
Yeah you can see that it did expand a bit but not as large as the other. I think it demands a retest for the next video where we test different layers of clothing on the Gel
@nikos6220Ай бұрын
@ that would be cool. Please consider adding a second block, your test doesn’t cover the FBI 12-18” in 10% organic, plus you’ll catch’em all. Thanks for the interesting test.
@blakeegan138Ай бұрын
Like to see the 147 grain HST out of that compact Shadow System. I understand federal changed their proven HST round adding a second cannelure causing it not to expand as well in short barreled pistols.
@nikos6220Ай бұрын
@@blakeegan138 interesting, didn’t hear that about the HST. In any case 147 grain in a short barrel 9mm Luger is a stupid idea. 115s or at max 124s are the way better choice to get to adequate velocities
@blakeegan138Ай бұрын
@ Thanks! You may do some research on the World Wide Web, I’d recommend starting with ammo quest on KZbin. I wasn’t asking for opinions, I was speaking to the professionals regarding what I’d like to see tested next.
@nikos6220Ай бұрын
Federal HST and Remington Golden Sabre scolded here for over-penetration are probably the only ones out of the contenders here that actually meet FBI standards 😂. Real Clear Ballistics overstates penetration depth vs. properly calibrated 10% organic gel by about 15-20%. So the 16” RCB block equates to 13.6” of real gel, barely meeting the lower bound of the FBI optimum of 12-18” in 10% organic gel and missing the high end altogether.
@cland9189Ай бұрын
@nikos6220 true that

I conducted comparative tests with water and the FBI's standards using water in place of ballistic gel. I used 1 gallon bags filled with water and stood up in a long wood tunnel. I used the 147grn Hornady XTP in 9mm. I used the Taurus PT99. I then measured where the bullet lied in the tunnel, multiplied that by .56 and came up with a basic penetration measurement of 12.6 inches in ballistic gel. Using a micrometer I measured the rounds expansion at 2.4 times original diameter. Then I weighed each round, 86.4 % of the original weight. These #'s are of averages from a 10 round test. Non of these #'s are with clothing or barriers like drywall vehicle windows or doors. Take this information for what you will, but I shoot Hornady for self defense and all my hunting needs.
@eriklambert3809Ай бұрын
Is the Speer LE the 124gr +P? I think it was meant for the G45/G19 barrel length. Federal did have a short barrel 150gr 9mm ammo they were developing. That would have been nice if they would have kept it.

@jmmorrisonАй бұрын
Appreciate the video. Out of curiosity, as we're going into winter, any particular reason you don't simulate with thicker clothing, like winter jackets, which can cause not only penetration but expansion and petaling issues, if the bullet gets caught up in the material? Same question I guess would apply for using or not using simulated or real animal bone? I realize adding both is probably a hassle and not the most conducive to creating connect, but would represent a more realistic, real-world simulation
@SheepdogResponseАй бұрын
We can defintely test something like that on the next one. The adding clothing wouldn't be difficult at all. As for the animal bone in gel, let me figure out some ways where we can try to simulate that. With Clear Ballistics Gel were able to melt to gel back into a form again and I'm sure we can use some sort wire to hold it in place while it cools.
@mhquigleyАй бұрын
Thanks guys. I'd like to see you test some 9mm frangible and some g9 external hollow points(barrier blind). I run frangible for home defense and g9 edc. Getting colder out and people adding layers. Test hollow points with shirts and jacket over gel block. If tip gets clogged with material, no expansion. Thanks again!

What are your thoughts on seismic 185 grain. Or double tap 77 grain?
@robertfrye2386Ай бұрын
I’ve always been a fan of Hornady myself. Question though, as each round is fired does the integrity of the gel become weaker and possibly contribute to more penetration?
@SheepdogResponseАй бұрын
Slightly Yes, we also marked each quadrants for it own placement. So they would be as spread about as we could. Next time we'll bring two gels

I think it would have been good to have a few layers of clothing in the front of the gel.

124s +P HST is a gold standard for FBI testing. I would mind seeing G9 etc.
@PaulAmericanАй бұрын
If I don't have to worry about shooting through a barrier then I would take liberty ammo civil defense. That being said shooting through barriers is a real possibility so I use G9 external hollow points. P.S. I don't respect companies that make "for gov use only" products. Every citizen's life is just as important as any gov employee's life..

In my experience, Winchester and Remington ammo is usually among the worst in most comparisons.
