Stoked to see the E36/E46 chassis on the list. The only little budget vs. performance fact I'd add is that the M54 (E46 330i/330Ci engine) makes essentially as much power as the E36 M3, making the E46 330 just as good, or even an M54 swapped E36. Great power without the additional maintenance/worries of the S engine. I daily drive a 5-speed 330Ci and I feel they're so underestimated overall.

In France, it is so expansive to buy a good car. Fortunately some of them go under the radar and I got myself a nice MX3 for 2500€ but with maintenance to do on it afterwards. Parts are also lacking more and more on the market... Nha, some places in the world just ignore what it is to have dreams as a young man and are just ruled by old farts stuffed of money expecting you to buy the last car out matching emition norms...

It's all about cost of entry and subsequent maintenance. I own a fully built 2004 STI and a 2003 NB2 MX-5. I only need to upgrade my brake pads, brake fluid, maybe run a crossflow radiator and have a good set of tires (hard dog roll bar was installed when I bought the Miata) in order to go do a track day or HPDE with a reliable car. Granted, I'm not paying Porsche prices for consumables even if I did run the STI but it's still going to be more than the Miata no matter what.

8:05 Agree. At one time I was getting back into cars. I had three cars that were disabled, a pickup, and a Prius. So I slapped on some older Potenza S-03 PolePosition tires and and took it to the track. I am proud to say I wasn’t the slowest car that day. And it was a good tool for allowing me to perfect a lap.

I feel like some of this is bad advice - a first track car is probably going to be crashed, so why get something really expensive? E36/E46 - Why does it have to be an m3? a stripped 328 would be plenty fast and a whole lot cheaper. S2000 - again, too much money in my opinion on a first track car. If the engine goes, you are spending enough to buy a miata just to get it back on the road

Some people see one E36 M3 or a S2000 as we see the 325i or MX5...its all about the wallet, they did a great job making a somehow wide options list.

Never been on a real track but am pretty active in Iracing. And the starter car, being a miata really shows how useful a slow starter car is. It’s so cool to see you pull out of a corner, door to door before a straight and watch a guy pull away from you cause he got on the gas .5 of a second sooner. Momentum is everything.

@@MMSstation93 Yeah it's not that it is terribly expensive compared to a nice s2k or e46 m3, but for 10-11 year old examples of 370z, 7 grand is literally the cheapest you can find. Most of them are 10-15 grand for the earliest years of the 370z which I think is just overpriced for what it is, and you can forget about anything newer. Subaru brz's have the same problem, you can't find even the oldest brz's for less than 10 grand unless it is a car with 5 owners and 3 accidents. There are alot of automatics out there, so finding a manual 370z is difficult enough, finding one for a reasonable price is even moreso. That being said I think they are pretty cool, I would love to have one as a first track car so I'm not disagreeing with you but I just think they are overpriced.

In australia the best track car you can buy is a manual AU falcon. RWD, 1500KG, massively tunable and reliable, cheap as hell parts, you can get a model with IRS or a live rear if you're going for track or drag driving. You can get them with a 250hp inline 6 or the 302 Windsor V8, RWD. If you want you can throw a barra into one (as they literally bolt right in, same mounting brackets as the I6 in the AU falcon) and now you have a 500hp track monster for less than $6000AUD (about 4k USD) Also they only cost like $1500 for a good running one.

I might have to slightly disagree with the green s2k guy in some respects, the most challenging car I have track so far is my 06subaru wrx as it has both understeer and oversteer to contend with in different situations, I found my previous cars (Nissan 350z and Toyota gt86) more predictable as you expected the oversteer. AWD so far is teaching me to be a better driver as well as mechanically setting up the car to be a more well rounded car, and I’m hoping this will serve me well the next time I’m on track as I have put a lot of effort into the suspension side of things to get the balance correct. I’m hoping this will then translate into quicker lap time as I will be able to better use the available grip given by AWD, allowing me to push it further than any 2wd cars
@oms325mg
@oms325mg 4 жыл бұрын
It's so tough in these videos to speak generally, there are always counter examples, but I do believe that 2wd car will teach you more in general than an AWD car. I'm glad your WRX is working for you and you are progressing as a driver. Most importantly this should be fun. As I said in the video, the BEST first track car is the one you can afford to put on the track. The second best is a miata.
@declanrobinson6624
@declanrobinson6624 4 жыл бұрын
oms325mg agreed that the best car is the one you can afford 😂 I do think it’s all based on what you have at your disposal and what you do get used to, there are people in the uk with close to stock Renault clios who can probably run rings round anyone on a track because they’re are a good drive, the most important thing is having a car that can take it and give you the seat time. I would agree as far as a little rwd car goes an mx5 is always a good shout. It’s all personal preference, but I do like the s2000’s as a platform and would never rule out buying one as I looked into them when I was coming out of my gt86 and 350z but mainly went with the wrx as it was a better daily and has more useable seats 😂
@lookship
@lookship 4 жыл бұрын
E36s prices in the UK are shooting through the roof. The drift scene has ramped the price of them up now since S-Bodys are now selling for £15k for a clean one, which is ridiculous. Personally I'd go for a GT86/FRS as a number 1 choice. I had one and it's the best chassis in a modern car hands down. Cheap parts and as long as you're not looking for crazy power (like 350hp+) out of the FA20, pretty reliable aswell. But I can see why the Civic and the S2K are back on another list. They're something that can just get HAMMERED everyday. Great video again guys 👍

If I lived in UK, the changes of me buying lotus elise S2 would be 200%. Who the F*** would pay premium for hammered e36 when you can literally pick up one of the best track cars in the world for 12-15k?
@lookship
@lookship 4 жыл бұрын
@@DuBstep115 I know right? But even Elise prices have started to soar recently over here. 2 years ago my friend sold his S1 for 9k (37k miles - really good condition) the cheapest on the market atm is 13.5 with double the mileage. Insane.
@DuBstep115
@DuBstep115 4 жыл бұрын
@@lookship 16k for good condition S2 is still a bargain compared what the rest of the world has to pay for them. For example you need to pay +20k euros for 140tkm driven S2 in Germany. Edit: Forgot that you can pick up Caterham Roadsport with 1.6 K-series 135bhp for 14k as well.

Probably a Miata, it’s so underpowered you can’t break anything. Or a WRX if you can afford to repair stuff like blown motors, transmissions, transfer cases, or differentials. The good thing about that is typically once you’ve fixed each one is they’re good for a long time after that. Imho though, a 600cc super sport would be more fun.

I feel like the S2000 doesn't fit into this list, simply because of it's price
@redlion145
@redlion145 4 жыл бұрын
It's in because of the driving characteristics, not it's price. But I agree, the rest were budget focused options, S2000 is becoming a collector piece. Could have been replaced in the list by the BRZ/86.

Man, I really disagree with this list. Don't get me wrong, they are all awesome cars but this is about your First track car, which means as a driver there is a lot to still learn. I think a noob in any of these cars is not a good idea. Stick them in something slower, that you can easily walk away from and be out only 2k, because they will go into a wall, off course, etc and gain a new respect for speed and the effects of an impact from a tire wall, etc. When I first started racing, I ran a Fiat 128, and chased a more seasoned guy in a Ford Fiesta for probably most of the year before I started to really figure things out. Then, I moved on to much faster cars. RWD vs. FWD vs. AWD is a big issue as well.

@David-nb2bc 2 жыл бұрын
Of course you can use a diesel. Some endurance teams use a diesel due to fuel economy and can get good power too. There is no smog on track driving. Only on public roads.

Bought a 2008 Honda Fit Sport 5MT last year. Currently have it set up for AutoX. They are a blast to drive. They are basically an updated version of the EG/EK civics, but with 5 doors. The Stock 1.5L motor isn't terrible. Incredibly realiable and great MPG. Like most Honda's you can free up a little HP with an intake, exhaust and a tune. The GD3 uses a lot of brake parts from the 90's civics. It's rather easy to buy and swap a K24 into a Fit. Bunch of options for Coilovers. Progress Group makes a killer rear sway bar. Wheel and tire combos are endless. Chassis stiffening options are endless. Just like the 90's civics there's tons of cheap parts to throw at the car to make it better.

The best first track car is anything with zero power and requires momentum to be fast. That’s how you learn to drive properly and with precision.

The best track car is a reliable one, because if it keeps braking down, youll have less chances to drive and race it around a track. And the main reason why youd wanna race around a track in the first place is to experience it.
