I get a lot of my 0 gauge from my local Pull and Save junkyard. A lot of the newer cars that has the battery in the rear will have a pure copper 0 gauge wire running from the trunk area all the way to the hood area. Been doing this for years and never had an issue. Plus rather than 2 to $4 a foot you're averaging out roughly 25 to 50 Cent foot 🍻😁🔊🌪🌪

Hello Robert, 2 questions 1. When selecting a power wire what all insulation materials we can look at and which is most ideal and flexible insulation. 2. Any suggestions for speaker wires with good shielding against noise. Thank you
@TPDhifi3 күн бұрын
I don't understand the point of paying extra for tinned copper in amp (car audio) wire. The purpose of tinning is to resist corrosion in areas exposed to the elements, yet the insulation on car audio wiring does not resist elements as well as actual battery cable. If you are that worried about corrosion, wouldn't it make sense to just buy actual battery cable with tinned copper so both the conductor and insulator will last?

I appreciate the shoot-out Thanks for posting Vega 👍 Now, lets talk tech. I don't know much about it, but I do know some basic understanding of electricity. OFC is OFC, there is nothing magical about it. It just is what it is, OFC! Some are tinned, some is Aluminum (CCA). Different Gauges, different current draws, and amp pull downs, Resistance, I get it 🙄 the longer the wire, the more the resistance. Cost. prices have increased over the last little while, (inflation, adjusted for stabile economic policies, I understand it, I get it,... don't like it, but I get it...) I have purchased Welding cable, it is OFC, it is multi-strand, highly flexible and flows current just as efficiently as any other cable of the same kind shape, size, etc... If these other wires were so much more efficient, don't you think that industries would have incorporated these designs into their manufacturing processes already? Don't you think Elon Musk must be using Full Tilt Cabling to power those booster rockets when leaving earths atmosphere, or do you think he is using that CCA cabling instead from Scosche?? 😁😃
@HifiVega Жыл бұрын
OFC is kind of car audio marketing. Welding cable is perfectly acceptable as it is pure copper. It’s just less flexible

I feel like I won the jackpot because I managed to get 2 50ft rolls of 1/0 OFC Sky High Audio cable for $126(that's what I paid for both, would have still been a decent deal even if I got each piece at that price.) But if I didn't get this sweet deal, I came across a brand called Atrih Technologies, they have 50ft rolls of OFC for $119(plus shipping) and the wire looks fairly legit and worth checking out.

You know, I was just looking up different metals and resistances, and Tin is only as electrically conductive as brass and nickel, its actually way less than aluminium, and its like 4 times the resistance of copper. So I wonder, is tin plated wire actually inferior to bare OCF wire, would it be far higher resistance per km or mile? I heard or read somewhere that the tarnish on copper doesn't affect the resistance or current transfer, and that that oxide layer in fact is beneficial. I think that's total BS personally, and I've always bought tinned wire for its longevity. Ever had wire that's turned green and powdery the whole way down the entire length of wire? After seeing this morning that the resistance of copper is like 60 aluminium was around 40 and tin nickel zinc and brass were around 15, it makes me wonder.... Is tinned wire in fact a poor choice like CCAW wire? (It's not as bad because its only a plating, but you get what I mean, is it measurably inferior) I also thought brass was miles better than aluminium and that's why I just spent hundreds on all these brass fuse holders and distro blocks, I thought aluminium was far inferior, boy did I f&#* up! 😆🤣😭 The only thing about aluminium I really hate is that it is very soft and threads are very easily destroyed.
@freeradical4313 жыл бұрын
Aluminum is superior in a lot of ways, its lighter, by weight its more conductive than copper, it dissipates heat faster, costs a lot less but you would probably need 2 runs of cheap CCA to equal 1 run of quality OFC.
@minus3dbintheteens603 жыл бұрын
In fact, if you ran 2 runs of CCAW, you end up with less resistance than 1 run of OFC. So, if the aluminium wire is half the cost of the copper, double it up and you are far far better off. You have to go up by 3 AWG sizes to double strand count or half resistance. If you ran 2 runs of 0awg CCAW instead of 1 run of OFC, electrically its almost the same as if you had of ran 3/0AWG copper. Because 0AWG is (all roughly) about 4000 strands, 2/0 is 5300 and 3/0 is 6600 strands. And 4/0 is 8000, or twice as much as 0AWG. And aluminium is apparently 60-65٪ as conductive as copper. I've done so much damn shopping the last few months, and I've learned that 1) getting accessories such as fuse holders, distribution blocks, battery terminals etc etc that can accept *larger* than 0AWG is basically impossible & 2) because you need to go to 4/0 just to double the current of 0AWG, because you don't save money buying the thicker wire, it actually costs a premium the thicker you want it, you are far *far* better off buying multiple runs of 0AWG than buying a thicker cable. For example, you might think its smart to run 2/0 from the front to the rear of the car, but its really is not smart at all, its going to give you 30% more current at best while costing much much more than 30% more $, then additionally you would have to use lugs because you can't find accessories that accept the 2/0AWG. Its *WAY* smarter and cheaper to buy a big roll of 0AWG CCAW and do 2 or hell even 3 runs of it, it will be lighter and more flexible and you will have more options with how you run it and how you terminate it and what accessories you can use, and this way you can do everything without having to buy a crimper and lugs too. In the end, if you buy CCAW and double it up, its equivalent to using copper in 2 sizes up, eg 2 runs of 0AWG CCAW is equivalent to a run of 3/0AWG OFC, because again, the aluminium is around 66% or 2/3rds of the conductivity, and each step up in AWG size (or each number down) is 33% more conducting metal eg 0AWG = 4000 strand, 2/0AWG = 5300 strand, 3/0AWG = 6600 strand. Knowing this info can save you so much time in researching power accessories like terminals, distribution blocks and the power wire, its crazy, let alone the money. And if you have super hungry amps, well, of course you just buy those dual 0AWG inputs. You buy a big roll, multiple runs from front to rear, make 4 runs to each amp if you want. I bought these sweet distribution blocks that are 2x 0AWG in - 4x 0AWG out, so I run 2 off the battery, to 2 fuses, in to the distro blocks, then 4 out to 2 pairs of dual input adapters to the amp. It's all smart, because the 2 runs off the battery, to the 2 ANL fuses, then to the distro blocks are super short, just a few inches long, then the 4 that go from the distribution blocks to the amp are fairly long, but because they are more than twice as long as the short ones, the 4 are actually the bottleneck, the 4 runs that go to the amp is a higher resistance than the 2 runs off the battery to the distribution block. I know there's a lot of wordy words in there 😂, but I do think its super helpful info, so I hope it helps someone out

@minus3dbintheteens603 жыл бұрын
@@PeterFeltersnatch852 sweet man, Im glad it can help someone out, coz I've spent countless hours these past couple of months deciding what wire and what accessories like fuse holders to buy. My advice, get a roll of CCAW 0AWG, and look at the IllCustomz 0AWG distribution blocks, they come in 6+6, 8+8 or even 10+10, so that 10+10 can accept 10 bare 0AWG wires on 1 side, and another 10 on the other side, 20 connections in total, they are made of aluminium which is better than brass and is actually better than everything other than super expensive copper, BUT, when copper and aluminium interact together they seriously degrade each other, they are poisonous to each other, but using the CCAW + the aluminium distribution block keeps it all the same, and light weight, and they are sold in pairs. Just google ILL CUSTOMZ 10 + 10 0AWG and you will see what I mean. A pair of them and a roll of 0AWG CCAW, you can supply *serious* current to whatever amps you like, with plenty out outputs to run off to all the batteries and capacitors and alternators you can muster. Again, you won't need a lug crimper or anything because you can get 0AWG bare wire fuse holders and battery terminals and everything you need. I wouldn't get the SMD fuse holders or distribution blocks or buss bars because they all require lugs, so do pretty much all curcuit breakers. ILL CUSTOMZ also sell dual 0AWG input adapters, but I've seen them on ebay for $30 aussie dollars a pair free post also. The only downside to going this way is I guess having to run extra power wires could look messy, I kinda of think it looks hard-core seeing 20 different 0AWG running everywhere, 4 going into each amp haha. Anyway, check out those products and have a think about the prices. They sell *super* fast, but if you want the distribution blocks that are 2x 0AWG in - 4x 0AWG out that I just bought myself, search on eBay for DB2040 distribution block. Peace!

@timmyinthewell12 жыл бұрын
@@HifiVega It is more susceptible to pressure so its best not to apply much pressure when measuring this way. Measuring a curved surface from the flat areas of the caliper and then squeezing ( it appeared that you were squeezing the calipers rather firmly?) to get a measurement would almost certainly produce a wider variety of less accurate measurements. That's my 2 cents anyway, I was a machinist for roughly 10 years.
@HifiVega2 жыл бұрын
@@timmyinthewell1 yeah I’m pretty familiar with using calipers as well using them every day for about 20yrs at work to measure parts and on the parts at work (lead plates) I use the tip because they’re not flexible like a wire casing. These wire casings also have ridges inside of them and many are inconsistent from one end to the other so i discovered this way was the best way for me to get consistent measurements after measuring more than 30+ wires and making 7 different videos on them.

@@mrcornut I would but most people dont know that CCA flows more current by mass than OFC. Meaning CCA that weighs the same as OFC, not measured by diameter of wire, will flow more current. But in cars size is an issue and therefore favor OFC.
@mrcornut3 жыл бұрын
@@freeradical431 CCA will still corrode/get brittle faster. Plus double the ring terminals, wire to purchase, grommets, zip ties, sleeving, heat shrink, fuse holders, ferules etc.. when you do the math, you're not really saving doing a second run IMO. People should run some good copper and call it a day. Overthinking it by focusing on theoretical current capability, you overlook the added costs and downsides by going with CCA. Look at the cost per gram of copper from the Limitless on his list. That stuff isn't the thickest, but if cost is somebody's only concern it's probably comparable to a couple similarly sized CCA runs after factoring in the other added costs. This is my subjective opinion, I live in a moist area that sees rain 200 days/yr.
