Every subsequent video needs the wordplay lol! Always appreciate the your blunt honesty about the state of the record game. I have been doing the record fair/show circuit for the past year, and, while the social element and quick cash are pluses, the buy-in takes a big cut and it's a whole day's work. It's seeming more attractive to just keep the higher-end inventory on Discogs and pass on the rest. Wise words at the end about wholesale, duly noted!

Thank you Lance! Really insightful advice. What advice would you give an aspiring store owner in acquiring collections, and maintaining a steady stream of inventory?
@PermanentRecordsLA3 ай бұрын
Acquiring collections and maintaining a steady stream of inventory is the hardest part of the business. There's only one piece of advice I have for you...hustle. Get out there, treat people well, network, and buy like there's no tomorrow! You have to spend money (and time) to make money!

The Mammoth album sounds like Skynard mixed with Kiss… feels more early 70’s than 1981. 👍🏻

Hell yeah! I hadn’t thought of the Kiss comparison, but I totally agree that it sounds older than it is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Please keep them coming.

When I buy collections I usually tell the seller they can sell them themselves online, for the more average/standard pop/rock/soul collections they might make 10$ an hr, or 15$ if they have sufficient knowledge, a good reputation and mabe get a little lucky. If the seller is making more than this in another job then holding onto them is often not all that tempting. Those reluctant to sell I advise to try and get an approximate value themselves, if I have not already given this to them, so if they do sell it on later they can get a 'fair' price, which is usually around 30% of retail value.

My father recently passed away and left behind his dearly beloved record collection of about 10-12K records. This collection was precious to him, however I dont know much about records, old music, popular artists, etc. and I would hate to just throw them in ebay lots and end up tossing in rare and valueable records for pennies a piece!. What do you suggest?!

A much better option would be to rent a table at the near by record shows. Organize your records, set up a neat table and price them a little below retail and be willing to negotiate. You don't have to travel long distances and depending on where you live you should be able to sell several times a year between smaller pop up type shows at coffee shops and brew pubs and the larger shows that set up at hotel conference rooms or community centers several times a year. It's not difficult or especially time consuming other than the day of show. You will get much more for your records compared to selling to a store and much less hassle than selling on line.

Thanks for your comment. Although I agree with that option and appreciate the folks who do sell this way, I think this is only a good option for folks with the time to do it. It’s very time consuming to price hundreds of records correctly in advance and the table fee is a factor in addition to the opportunity cost of earning the money you would at another job (at least minimum wage). If you don’t make at least a few hundred bucks in profit, you’ll be in the hole at the end of the day. Some folks don’t hit that mark and others far exceed it. It all depends on the kind of time and effort one wants to put into it. All the best of luck to those who choose to go down this road.

@@PermanentRecordsLA a six foot table only costs $50-60 and you can put about 500 LPs on one. Once you’ve priced them you only have to price the replacements so it isn’t that time consuming. There is no maintenance of an online presence or constant packaging and going to the post office. Shows are on weekends so it doesn’t interfere with most work schedules. It’s also great for retire folks like me.

@@elliottcrews4997 I hear ya! I love going to record shows and buying records from vendors like you. That said, I don't think it makes sense for most folks with full-time jobs and families or people who work more than 40 hours a week. If it works for you and it makes you happy, keep doing it! I hope to buy from you at a record show in the future!

You didn't mention getting a table at a record show. What are your thoughts on that option?
@PermanentRecordsLA3 ай бұрын
Good point. That's another option for sure. Most successful record show dealers that I know engage in a lot of wholesale business. The folks to try to get retail for all of their records at record shows end up going home with most of their inventory after the show. Some of the best records will sell at the show, but you'll be left trying to figure out what to do with the rest. Also, record show dealers have to spend a lot of time and money preparing for the show, traveling to and from, and incur a fair amount of expense in lodging, etc. I think most people considering selling at a record show in order to sell all of their records would do just as well, if not better, selling the all of their inventory to a store owner who is willing to buy all of the inventory. And they would save a lot of time, money, and stress in the meantime!
