Here's a quick story about the use and term ACME in American History. Where did it come from? Is it an acronym for something? Does history show us more about cartoons and the nature of institutions and social structures?

The one thing most people don’t realize is near the end of the RoadRunner series, it’s revealed that the ACME Corporation is owned by the RoadRunner himself. So not only did he guarantee his success for survival, he profited off it too.

@@Itsmehistory There actually is one, Google "Coyote v. Acme Product Liability Case". "In the United States District Court, Southwestern District, Tempe, Arizona" Case No. b19294, Judge Joan Kujava, Presiding Wile E. Coyote, Plaintiff -v.- Acme Company, Defendant Opening Statement of Mr. Harold Schoff, attorney for Mr. Coyote: My client, Mr. Wile E. Coyote, a resident of Arizona and contiguous states, does hereby bring suit for damages against the Acme Company, manufacturer and retail distributor of assorted merchandise, incorporated in Delaware and doing business in every state, district, and territory. Mr. Coyote seeks compensation for personal injuries, loss of business income, and mental suffering caused as a direct result of the actions and/or gross negligence of said company, under Title 15 of the United States Code, Chapter 47, section 2072, subsection (a), relating to product liability. Mr. Coyote states that on eighty-five separate occasions he has purchased of the Acme Company (hereinafter, “Defendant”), through that company’s mail-order department, certain products which did cause him bodily injury due to defects in manufacture or improper cautionary labelling. Sales slips made out to Mr. Coyote as proof of purchase are at present in the possession of the Court, marked Exhibit A. Such injuries sustained by Mr. Coyote have temporarily restricted his ability to make a living in his profession of predator. Mr. Coyote is self-employed and thus not eligible for Workmen’s Compensation. Mr. Coyote states that on December 13th he received of Defendant via parcel post one Acme Rocket Sled. The intention of Mr. Coyote was to use the Rocket Sled to aid him in pursuit of his prey. Upon receipt of the Rocket Sled Mr. Coyote removed it from its wooden shipping crate and, sighting his prey in the distance, activated the ignition. As Mr. Coyote gripped the handlebars, the Rocket Sled accelerated with such sudden and precipitate force as to stretch Mr. Coyote’s forelimbs to a length of fifty feet. Subsequently, the rest of Mr. Coyote’s body shot forward with a violent jolt, causing severe strain to his back and neck and placing him unexpectedly astride the Rocket Sled. Disappearing over the horizon at such speed as to leave a diminishing jet trail along its path, the Rocket Sled soon brought Mr. Coyote abreast of his prey. At that moment the animal he was pursuing veered sharply to the right. Mr. Coyote vigorously attempted to follow this maneuver but was unable to, due to poorly designed steering on the Rocket Sled and a faulty or nonexistent braking system. Shortly thereafter, the unchecked progress of the Rocket Sled brought it and Mr. Coyote into collision with the side of a mesa."

Not sure what aisle that would have been in, however? I believe the formal name of the company was The Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Co., doing business as Acme Grocery stores. Then in the mid-1960s they added general merchandise under the name of "Click" for about 25 years. I guess "Fresh Market" came along in the early 2000s while I was living out of state.

I used to do business with a company named A&A Manufacturing. I always assumed that the "A&A" stood for Attachments and Accessories" but when the company changed its name to "Dynatect" about 8 years ago, my local sales rep revealed that "A&A" had no meaning, whatsoever, and the founders of the company just wanted to be listed first in phone books and the Thomas Directory. Side note: The new name "Dynatect" is short for "Dynamic Protection."

I’m the videographer of the Southern, California Railway Museum. Our archives show it was more than the automobile showing up on the scene. There was a bond measure to fix the rails. It was voted against. Also after WWII the US government realized how efficient the Autobahn was at moving tanks. So we copied it to protect our country and achieve the upgrade by pushing the expansion of the automobile “highway” High because it’s above the roadbed and can support huge loads like semi trucks or tanks if our country was ever to be invaded.

There’s a street named Acme St, which, I guess, used to be its headquarters, or at least, once lead to the quarry. But now all of Acme Brick requires you to go down the next block. In the late 1980s, they started stamping their logo into the bricks. This is important - I'm an old artist who has done some animation. The most popular brand of animation equipment (lighted drawing tables with rotating glass surfaces, registration pegs, animation camera stands with registration pegs and glass pressure plate, acetate cells and paint that will stick to them, etc.) in the 1930s and 1940s was ACME. So, along with all the things you point out here, there is also the fact that everyone at Warner Bros. Termite Terrace animation department was actually seeing the Acme logo on everything they were working with had to be a factor.

-Wlie E. Coyote, typing on a Acme Typewriter: "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human being to greater indignities...."
