There is nothing more “theater kid” than emotionally connecting with a solo and thinking you’d do it better because you really understand it.

I honestly saw the whole song as Ruth *longing* for this life. Like, even despite how the character (in the BBQ monologues) is singing about how much she hates her life as a wife, Ruth would still prefer those hardships, over her current life, because she knows she'll never be able to experience living a life like that.

Only comment: grace is 100% actually spinning and dancing around while explaining the plan this is proven by Steph going “why do you keep doing that??” When she spins twice. I think Ruth is actually singing on stage but I think the light changes are just in her head to show the emotional change of tone.

Unpopular opinion, but Just For Once is one of the best songs in StarKid history for all these reasons and more. It's absolutely 100% still parody, it's one of the most obvious Sondheim pastiches I've heard in my life, but it leans into it and proves that just because something is poking fun at something else doesn't mean it can't evoke the feelings of and possess the depth of its inspirations. Also, because there will never be a point when this is not true, we have no choice but to stan Lauren Lopez. The perfectly-timed switches from character voice to something more natural to show Ruth getting lost in the song, how much her body language changes as you said, UGH SO GOOD

Also Lauren Lopez is playing a character playing a character here. It’s a level of acting that seems really easy on the surface but is so difficult to pull off believably and Lauren KILLS IT!! (She also did the choreo for the show and it’s phenomenal in so many ways but that’s a whole separate reason to stan Lauren Lopez)

I’m sad that they keep repeating the bathroom is carpeted, because while it’s true, it’s used as an analogy for her life being worse than moldy and musty generally gross carpet. That’s why she says the line “and of the two, who’s the worse for wear? Me.” I wish people noticed it more.

i’ve always thought that Ruth chose to sing that specific part of the barbecue monologues act as a way to show that what Ruth truly yearns for is an ordinary life as a normal person and not the harsh bullying she experienced at hatchet field high or as foreshadowing that Ruth won’t even get to live as sad of a life as the woman in the song i mostly think that just for once contrasts Richie in npmd (the song) he realises that he is not a nerdy prude and that he is better than what max said about him , Ruth doesn’t get that she dies feeling like she isn’t able to perform and that due to max’s comments she isn’t even good at it Richie at least gets a chance to have selfworth Ruth doesn’t

It’s not a bad song it’s just quite long and doesn’t move the story along at all, it’s also right after arguably the two best songs in the whole show so Just for once was kinda set up from the beginning. (Also just in my personal experience) my first time watching NPMD I was super invested in the main story and was already concerned how they’d wrap up the story in less than an hour so being taken to an unrelated scene for 12 minutes that felt like it was dragging made me view the song less favourably.

I think the line of "theres still carpet in the bathroom, out of the two, whose the worst for wear? Me." is about them renevating their home, a really popular trend back then was to put carpet in the bathroom. If they are renevating while in the middle of chemo treatments it was probably put on hold to pay for those treatments. I mean they installed the new bay window when she turned 40, probably a birthday gift for her, even though she clearly didnt want it. "Theres still carpet in the bathroom" but out of the two she feels worse than the carpeted bathroom that gets stepped on by wet feet constantly. I do think she is singing the song because no one is on stage, i used to do this all the time in empty hallways and theaters, the lights are in her head. She is acting on stage and "living" her dream. Its a theater kid thing. I used to have bad stage frieght like ruth, i totally get it. Also the BBQ monologs, could be a funny joke that StarKid did. As Monologs are just monologs, but its actually a musical. I know a lot of musical theater movies have come out and the trailers dont tell that its a musical

on note from the topic at 4:50 i think that this is ruth breaking the fantasy and coming back to reality. i believe that ruth did use to dance as we learn later that pete did tap which is possibly how he met ruth and that when her anxiety got really bad she could no longer actually take part when they went on stage and eventually she gave her tap shoes to a kid who would actually use them since she doesnt anymore. it comes back to the entire theme of the song of ruth wanting to be able to be center stage but she cant her anxiety doesnt allow her to. she use to dance and its repeated to show her emotions about how she use to get attention for her performance but now she doesnt

I always saw it as a shockingly self aware moment. A common thing parents/pop culture tells kids who are bullied at school that the bullies and popular kids peak at high school. The Woman's childhood was probabaly more like the theatre kids than Ruth's (she used to dance). So Ruth is aware that this unhappy normalcy is what the future looks like for those kids. And maybe she's been told that, but what does her future look like then? She doesnt see her own future, she doesnt know what she'll get, and in addition to regular disenfranchised nerddom, she also knows that theres a killer going around and that the police might catch up to her. She longs to have a childhood that earns a guaranteed normalcy

I like to think JFO isn't all about loss and realizing she will never ve center stage; it's a slow realization that now she finally can. Or could She laments over how horrible her life (as The Woman) is, but that now, just for once she could feel the long lost spark again. I see it as a metaphor for Ruth, who lost her confidence due to bullying slowly realizing that now, with Max gone, she has a chance again. If only she dares and makes that difficult choice (hence the bridge) In the end she is destroyed by Max, bith literally and figuratively: her ruined self esteem doesnt allow her to try and then she gwts murdered

Alternate possibility: every hatchetfield musical takes place after the musical apocalypse in tgwdlm which is why they’re all musicals (I know this doesn’t really make sense due to the hive mind thing, but it’s fun to think about)

some people really seem to hate this song. i adore it. i found the discussion about whether the song is real really interesting though: personally i wonder if the intricacy isn't with ruth's place in reality but with max's. when he dies and comes back as a ghost, he starts existing outside the limits of the show. he can bend time, he can travel over massive space, because for him the stage isn't the school or the forest, it's the stage. if that makes sense? whether ruth was singing or not, whether it was just a song like all the others - max can recognise it as a song from the musical Nerdy Prudes Must Die. he joins the audience and he reacts as they do. no idea if this makes sense but, there's my theory lmao

As someone with lots of crippling anxiety, this song really got to me. Part of me has always wanted to be an entertainer in a way. I always felt like I would've been the class clown -if I could actually speak in class, like I would have loved performing in theater or a band -if I could function on a stage with people watching me. I repeatedly came so close to joining theater club in school as either a tech person like Ruth or some other behind the scenes job. I knew I wouldn't be able to actually perform on stage, but I wasn't even able to join the behind the scenes part of it either... Idk, there's something about it being so emotional coming from a high schooler in the tech department while I'm an adult who was too asocial to make it that far even. The "I used to dance... I used to dance..." hits so hard. The way I interpreted it was Ruth coming to the harsh realization that unlike the bbq monologues character, Ruth won't be able to say she used to dance. It's a fantasy that she can never have, a fantasy that will never be true and not just because she dies right after. Maybe I'm just seeing it this way because of my own experience, but I can't see it as anything but Ruth (or this imagined adult version of herself) mourning the loss of the hypothetical experiences she (the real, current high school Ruth) can't reach because of her mental health. There's something so heartbreaking about mourning a past that is still your present

I think the dream sequence intro to the monologue might be from the BBQ Monologues Play. “In my dreams, it’s my BBQ,” could be a line Maury’s wife says to transition into her monologue. Otherwise I agree with your summation, I think the monologue is real and the song is a musical representation of the real thing.

Okay some thoughts. I don't know why I didn't notice the change in choreography between verse and chorus until you pointed it out. Also interesting to note that the love life between The Woman and Maury very much seems to at least halfway echo Ruth's current problems with wanting to be touched and have sex. I could be looking into it too much but just for once has pole vaulted to my favorite song the last few weeks and it's all I think abt

Ngl, after watching The guy who didnt like musical, i just assumed that all hatchet town musicals were with the characters canonically singing. Like, they for real suddenly start singing. Except in those different realities, they dont question it because its normal for them, while in tgwdlm it wasnt. Why i think that? Well, In addition to the fact that all these musicals feel linked to a certain level, it's because some of the songs comment on the singing. Hatchet town has "but we're singing still!", in bury the body has "oh shes snapping again!" The only songs id define as "not 100% real" is dirty girl, which is confirmed that its Grace's imagination and nerdy prudes/dirty dudes must die, where the people singing in the background are obviously not there (tho they could easily be hallucinations created by dark magic, who knows). For Ruth's song, i just assumed she was 100% singing, even if it wasnt really part of the show. Almost like those singing moments were stronger than the characters.

My headcannon is that Ruth is not performing a song from The BBQ Monologues, she’s performing what *her* BBQ monologue would be - she aspires to be a middle aged cancer survivor in a loveless marriage. Because at least once in her life (when she had cancer) she was the center of attention. That’s her dream. And it’s so sad.

Love the analysis!!! This is probably my favorite song from NPMD, if not the entire Hatchetfield trilogy so I am so pleased to see a video like this about it :DDD I agree with your third theory, it feels the most plausible- but I do love the parallels to Richie's death drawn by the first one. Max kills each of them immediately after they achieve something they desire deep down- Richie wants to be well-liked, he is killed after the football team accepts him, Ruth wants to be back in the spotlight, she is killed after she delivers a flawless performance. You have gained a new subscriber for sure!!!
