Too much treble on that Kohler. Almost sounded like an old saloon piano.

The Kohler had quite harsh trebles - for me, it's the Steinway all the way - rich and mellow.

I preferred the mid sized piano sound! I guess also, the sound would differ depending on the make of piano and this experiment could go on for ages!

Congrats, but to be fair, they intentionally chose brands, which sound different the first place (regardless the size). Steinways and Yamahas are manufactures widely differently and got different sound profiles in general. And Kohler & Campbell pianos are not even the same field of pianos... They are great, but are not the same high-end pianos as the others...

The camera position is also relevant since the sound can be different from the front, back, top, bottom... maybe that is why the second one sonds better because it is ABOVE the piano.

This really was a fun video, and I enjoyed it immensely. It is astounding to compare the differences of sound of these different pianos. It's hard to not say that the 9ft grand doesn't sound completely amazing. So of course the length of the strings gives more overtones, but does the body of the piano itself resonate, or at least does a larger body allow more resonance within the piano? I'm thinking of stringed instruments, but the premise seems similar to me.

I thought the same thing, but I bet you'd have to hear the 9 footer in person to really sense the difference. The 9 footer's difference may be something you feel more than you hear. Whereas the difference between the 5 footer and 4 footer was obvious in the way it sounded. Also, I'm sure the recording of the video is a huge factor here. The pianos are in different rooms which would affect how well the microphone detects the sound waves from the piano. The 5 foot looked like it was crammed into a small space (probably made it sound richer), but the 9 footer was in more open space (less nearby surfaces for the sound to bounce off of).

Rich: Great that you bobbled your head like that over any notion like "Less than 6' is a baby grand and more than 6' is a grand"! First of all, I AGREE WITH YOU TOTALLY that it's best to forget the term "baby grand" completely and just talk about what dimension grand it is -- "5 ft grand," "7 foot grand" etc. To me, A GRAND IS A GRAND; all grands are grands; they're the same kind of animal. :-) I've owned 4'11, 5'1, 5'7, and 6'11 grands -- and they're all grands.

The overtones are what create the timbre of the instrument. Without them, we'd just hear a sine wave tone.

Hi guys! I was wondering if you could do a video on the Estonia grand piano. In my subjective view, that piano company has such a unique sound and resonance (especially in the middle register). I was wondering what parts/manufacturing techniques are used in creating this particular grand. Also, how does the price on an Estonia compare to similar piano companies. Who knows, maybe you'll have a very interested customer in a couple years (hint hint wink wink). All the best! Kyle

This was really an entertaining and educational video, but what is a “grand” piano? We have only ever had vertical pianos in our family. Is any piano with an horizontal plate a “grand”?
@ashleygwynn516
@ashleygwynn516 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think so. I have always called vertical pianos “upright” pianos. And so, the horizontal kind would be grand (I think, because of the grandeur of the sound produced).

The length of a baby grand piano ranges from five feet to five feet seven inches, as detailed above, (with the petite being under five feet in length). The width of most acoustic pianos, regardless of their length, is five feet wide.

Other things VERY important is the size of the room the piano will be played in. If you put a 9’ piano meant for a 5000 seats concert music hall into a 12’ long room the sound will be horrible and you couldn’t stay in the room more than 2 minutes. I have a 12x9 foot music room and I opted for a 5.7 foot long piano. A 6.1 was already too loud

You should FIRST start by saying which microphone are you using to record this or if it's just the camera or iPhone microphone and if all the pianos are recorded equally, because I see you recorded them from totally different angles and distances, of course they are going to sound different.

The Yamaha sound was the cleanest. Most likely because of the size, but also because different brands have different sound signature. Steinway have softer rounder sound than Yamaha. My wish for a instrument for myself would be 6' 5" to 7' 5". And either handmade European or handmade American piano. Hamburg made Steinway pianos have a very good reputation.

Awesome... But maybe the fact that you showed different brands is a bit of a cheating here. Yamahas and Steinways are having so many differences in manufacturing, they sound widely different regardless the size. It would have been better to maybe see this with the same brand. That would have showed the true size difference.
