Just bought Borealis for hiking. The water hose (from hydration bladder) goes through the top loop of shoulder strap but still has a long length loosely/awkwardly hanging. Any ideas to secure it more? What is the small loop on the chest strap for?

You can try putting the hose underneath the loop on the shoulder strap to secure it down. Some hydration bladder hoses also come with a magnetic clip that can be attached to the shoulder strap. Hope this helps!

Is this bag good for hiking?. Does it have a trekking pole holder?

Yes, the North Face Borealis can be used for hiking but it's not the best option since it's so focused on being a laptop/everyday backpack. It is also missing side compression straps that be used to cinch down trekking poles. You can look into the Patagonia Refugio and Fjallraven Skule for similar options with more hiking specific features. For example, the Patagonia Refugio allows you to remove the laptop sleeve altogether. The shoulder straps are very adjustable so focusing on your height and will be your best bet. If you are a shorter woman who usually finds most unisex backpacks too long (going past your lower back) then you should stick with the smaller womens backpack. Hope this helps!
