Coronation Class will always hold a special place in my father's heart, his dad used to drive Dutchess of Rutland, been looking to buy him a set for his new hobby, thanks for the video!

Nice one Jennifer...My all time favourite class of steam locomotive. I am old enough to have seen them in action ... Hauling the Mid-day Scot away from Euston ... on shed in Camden Depot ( when nobody was looking ) and previously, fast and furious northbound on the West Coast Mainline. Before I had seen the real thing, one Christmas my younger brother and I had a present of the Hornby triple rail Duchess of Atholl "train set".... 1952 ...

I look forward to you doing a review of the forthcoming Hornby Princess 4-6-2's.

Mine is from the late 70's-early 80's period so does not have the fixed rear trailing wheel-set but does have the 'sticky-out' front Pony Truck. They are impressive models though, no matter what the age of production. The DCC sound is quite the bonus. Lovely pieces. Cheers Jenny.

That is a beautiful class of locomotive.

Hi Jenny Tony from the Monday Club here.......love the comparison.....the coal load and cab details are definitely not a deal clincher but certainly the front bogie is. Being a locomotive fireman/driver I tend to look at the realism of operation which I think is heading in the right direction......though not quite there yet I am hoping that "driving" the latest model will feel much more prototypical

A great video Jenny and a superb loco, I would love one with the later tender emblem.

The floating front bogie - Mainline (Palitoy) did that 40 years ago on their Royal Scot model with a spring and coupling. PS Great video.

Hi Jennifer, if I am right you should be able to take the coal out of the tender of the new Montrose loco to reveal the coal pusher detail insider the tender

Good review, Jen. Im still amazed that the rear bogie isnt articulated. Even on the Dublo Coronations they managed to do this and that must be over 50 years ago.

Nice video jenny i love these locomotives i have two of the older versions the duchess of Sutherland tender drive ans princess Louise which my husband bought me because Louise is our daughter's name

Have several Duchess and Princess from the previous mould and a new one. I just can't see any point whatsoever in replacing them with the most recent iteration. Inarguably the latest is better, but not so much as to outlay the cost unless purchasing another additional rather than replacement/s. The appearance of the coal could easily and inexpensively be addressed if it bothered.

The coupling distance looks similar if anything the older model looks a tad closer coupled but the gap is still huge on both models. Pity a sprung version is not used so that on straights the loco and tender are nice and close......

Hornby do manufacture some very good products the only problem I have with them is they have neglected the Irish market, Murphy's Models have now cornered this market. I would've love hornby to have made a RTR model of the CIE 800 class similar in design to the Stanier Black Five.

A very nice review Jenny. The new tooling has made a good model look great. I have been trying to watch the first episode of the Great Railway Challenge, but all the links seem to come from other KZbinrs and although they say it is free, they did charge my account and when you start watching it, it is a Video Game Site. Yes, I know I should not give out details like that, but I just wanted to watch it before I watch Hornby Singelbox. Are Hornby allowed to show it or who is? Sorry to bother you. Martin (Thailand)

Whats the difference between a Princess and a Princess Coronation class and also a Princess and a Princess Royal? Thanks

Great and informative video, I have subscribed to your channel now. The model is really worth the money, but the TTS chip - sorry to say, a waste of money in my eyes, seems to run more jerky than on DC and the sound hurts in my ears. I'd rather spend twice as much for a better chip.

I thought you were going to compare the latest with the much older tender drive Coronations, which i.m.h.o. are crap, as are all Hornby tender drive locos. These two are both as good as each other as far as looks go, with the exception of the latest version, which does have a few more details and a few good improvements to thedraw bar and front bogie attachment. My layout is dc only, so I tend to run railroad versions, because of their cheaper price. I am not a rivet counter, so as long as it performs good on track, then that's all that matters to me I have two of these. City Of Lichfield and King George V1 in early crest BR livery and both run as sweet as a nut. Regards Geoff

A most informative comparison, Jenny, thanks, but, oh dear, that sound effect. The sound of diesels seems to have been copied successfully, but I'd rather rely on my imagination and memory for that of steam.
