I work in a company that makes Expanded Polystyrene insulation. One chemical that's part of the job is pentane. If you think it's related to methane, propane, butane (stuff in cigarette lighters), you're right; it's right in there with Things That Go Foom. One time, we were cleaning in the room where we store EPS bead for molding. Someone knocked an air hose off it's connection by accident. Not a big deal, and detaching these is something we actually deliberately do in one process. What WAS a big deal is one guy decided we needed more light and brought out his lighter. All of us were hollering at him to stop. He was out the door in short order. BTW, on the doors to that room, there are big "NO OPEN FLAME" signs.

The girl who made a fuss about reading a paragraph during training was either looking for a reason to sue, or assuming she hadn't read yet, couldn't read or had trouble reading, and was trying to hide it.

I’m gonna bet on the latter. Speak as a former trainer, you’d be surprised how many people apply, and are hired for jobs that they simply have no real ability to work.

Saw a young man get hired at his interview only for him to walk down a hallway to attack a coworker (to rob her of her iPhone), get tackled to the ground, restrained, pepper sprayed, then tazed......to be fired in handcuffs as police were carrying the moron away. His employment lasted - technically -10 minutes.

I work at a theme park. My first year there, I started at the same time with this angry old man (which I later learned by my supervisor that he made inappropriate pranks behind the scenes), who was a seasonal worker, went to the park on one of his days off, tried to get a free meal from the restaurant in the park we work in and went ballistic on management (he didn't even want to use the employee discount) and he got gone quick courtesy of management and HR.

Not a fast fire but I had a co-worker that went in the bathroom to shoot up heroin or do something else after every break. He told our supervisor I was yelling at him, when all I did was tell him that he needs to stop doing that because the upper management are complaining about people going to the bathroom for long periods of time after breaks. I told them I know he was shooting up in the bathroom, half the employees are on drugs, but they didn't believe me. This along with other false accusations thrown against me made me determined to quit. 3 days later he was gone, I was right. Failed a drug test they didn't need because they caught him with the needle hanging out of his arm. Not long after that I was gone, and the company started bleeding out revenue because no one was willing or could do the job. Went to work right down the road, so much better.

First story: approximately 2% of the US population has a shellfish allergy. That's 16 potentially life threatening illnesses that poster prevented. That bonus was tiny compared to the financial and reputation costs they saved the owner.

Story 1. If you are basing your management style on Gordon Ramsay then only 1 person needed to be shown the door - YOU. It is your responsibility to ensure staff are familiar with cross xontamination prevention and YOU failed. In addition you abused your staff for your own failure.

Dude I was taught cross contamination in high school. Plus you can do your job property and the employees still fail 🤷 it's unfair to say op "abused" staff over something like that
