I Did this exactly 1 year ago. I now own 150LPs and that is a nearly perfect collection to me. It's a mix of albums that I used to own (Adam & the Ants, The Jam, SLF), along with classics like (VH1, Led Zep, Rumours, SGT Pepper). Very happy with what I have. Play them all and love every single one. No filler albums this time around.

If I had to restart my collection, I'd buy Nirvana's Nevermind, U2's Achtung Baby, Queen's Innuendo and Alice Cooper's Trash. If I had some money left over, I'd look for Metallica's Ride the Lightning, Machine Head's Burn My Eyes and Deftones' Around the Fur.

I think you mean Garth Brooks "No Fences" -- that was the first Garth album I bought many years ago when he only had two! Back then (early 90s), there was no streaming and CDs were about $15 and tapes $10. I remember debating at the record store between his self-titled debut album (since I really wanted "The Dance") and "No Fences," which had "The Thunder Rolls" and "Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House." Ultimately, I got "No Fences," but now thanks to used record stores I can get CDs for about $4 and I have five Garth albums!

My mistake on the typo, I've been listening to his stuff since I was a toddler (I'm a little over 20 now) and never actually got my hands on a physical copy sadly. Appetite for Destruction and Master of Puppets are the 2 albums I could never do without. Avenged Sevenfold Self Titled, Badmotorfinger, Vulgar Display of Power, Rust In Peace, Reign in Blood, Nevermind, Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Blood Sugar Sex Magik are other albums on my short list. If something happened and I could only listen to these albums for the rest of my life, I think I would be fine with it. Their is something to suit nearly every mood for me. Guns N Roses, Metallica and Nirvana have to be in my collection. These 3 Bands are the reason I got into music. As I have gotten older, I have found that the heavier albums in my collectio are the ones I often come back to the most. Appetite was the first album that really blew my mind. The Black Album and Nevermind also completely moved me like few album have ever done after the first listen. Master of Puppets took a bit longer as It was the early 90s and I was only about 14 or 15 at the time and just staring to explore heavy music. Another album I still love to this day is Blood Sugar Sex Magik by RHCP. I don't listen to it all the time but when I do, it moves me. I think it comes very close to a masterpiece. I have done think I have listen to many albums that diverse yet so great. Melon Collie and The Infinate Sadness might just be the most diverse album I have ever listened to. Most Albums I listen to have a similar sound throughout the entire album.

Trying to figure out the first album to buy in such a situation is a real conundrum! I actually experienced losing many (but not all) of my music collection twice before due to theft, but I had a much smaller collection then. Now I have roughly 200 albums (CD and cassette), which I've largely acquired through used record shops. I would have to start by selecting my favorite artists from several different genres so I couldn't choose just one. I've noticed that there are a few albums in my collection that are go-to choices when I can't decide what I want to listen to, such as Conway Twitty's "Silver Anniversary Collection" and Shenandoah's "Greatest Hits." I also have certain artists that I must have in my collection when I get in a mood to listen to them -- these include Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Judy Collins, and Andy Williams just to name five. So, I think I would probably need a bare minimum of 25 albums to keep me satisfied in the short run!

I had to rebuild at 19 and went with cd only. I went with the following: 1. Dells "There is" 2. Dells "Passionate breezes" 3. Babyface "A closer look" 4. Isley Brothers "Beautiful ballads" 5. Wayman Tisdale "Power forward" The manner of which I built it over the first year was 1/4 compilations of substance for variety with an eye towards artists with out of print works, 1/4 current, 1/4 classic, 1/4 rare and classic. The emphasis was on solid reissues and the currents that would likely go out of print. Common titles were always bought second hand. All of this was on cd with a high emphasis on soul, jazz, and a bit of country. Core favorites were acquired within the first year. Special orders were common. A notebook of anything of note was where purchases were decided and not in record stores. Impulse buys were weighted against knowledge of what you'd be giving up as funds were limited. Today I'm at 80,000 and expanded to imports, some classic rock, and full catalog jazz from the 50's.

I am like Anthony I want to downsize and I have 640 records and CD's, maybe minuscule compared to each. I have never gone done 100% scorched earth sell my collection - the mainstay throughout has been Led Zeppelin "The Complete Studio Recordings" CD box set my mom got me, I have sold to that level and done it a few times. On this go around, what got me back into it was before vinyl caught fire again, I bought The Band - Capitol Albums vinyl box set for $70 on Amazon - now it is quadruple that number at minimum. I agree with Anthony I am desiring to get it to what I want and the issue there is I wouldn't want to breakup my The Rolling Stones discography, Miles Davis I got nearly 40 of his albums, so when you talk right out of the gate there is 70+ albums I have of both artists right there it becomes difficult to really reduce. I might be at that point as well where I might be able to prune 50 to 100 music pieces and be at 500 or so pieces and that is my bottom line. But to answer the question - it goes what you said in the video it would be what I would be in the mood in starting over. If I had to pick six pieces to start (assuming the music stores I go to have each): The Rolling Stones In Mono (vinyl or CD) Led Zeppelin Definitiive Collection (CD boxset from 2008 that is the Japanese Mini LP CD's with Obi Strips) The Clash Sound System The Band A Musical History Joe Strummer - 002 The Mescaleros Years (vinyl box set) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live At The Fillmore 1997 (vinyl or CD box set)

I just started my collection last year and i'm currently sitting at 52 CD's (Vinyl too expensive for me) The harder expensive ones I would have to find right away would be: Rick James - Fire it Up Rick James - Bustin Out the L7 Joi - Star Kitty Revenge Danny Brown- XXX Iggy Pop - Soldier Chaka Khan - Chaka Chaka Khan - Naughty Stooges - Funhouse box set

Chaka was just reissued in a digi-pack that doesn't fit easily on the shelf. Some of those Rick James titles were tough to get via Japanese imports and now defuncted Hipo-sect. Glow was only ever bootlegged but the later ones aren't as good to my ears anyway. It's always bang verse high cost of rarity if funds are limited. I have 80K cds and have his entire cd catalog but if funds were limited I could go with one of those double disc "best of's". However, I'd still get Teena Marie's rare promo cd single of "Just us two."

@@DorianPaige00 I also have Rick's catalogue on CD (Not anything after *Cold Blooded* cause I don't really like those albums and dude was loosing his magic touch at that point). I couldn't find "Fire it Up" on CD anywhere except for one on Ebay last year that I bid against somebody for like $250. Also I was talking about the Chaka Khan'a self titled from 1982 which caused me like $50 AND YOU COULDN'T FIND ANYWHERE ElSE ON CD except Ebay 😭 not her self titled 70's album. I have that one on digi pack but it sounds horrible on my speaker, i'm selling it for cheap and getting a better copy.

@@Silkscarf153 There was an original album series 5 cd box on Chaka. I paid $40 for my Chaka Khan Japanese pressing in 2010. That's the one with "Got to be there" on it. Rick is on there too. There's a Japanese version of Epiphany that was on the want list for a long time for a bonus cut. I was quickly on those Hipo-select titles and dealt with them directly.
