An additional point on the "sinking" fate, the ghost engine mentioned by Rusty died in a river. So if we believe the story to be real, that means that in the event the engine didn't die on impact, engines can still drown like humans. Taking Salty into account, perhaps they can withstand longer under the water than humans can, but will still eventually die beneath the waves.

Even if this story isn’t true, we still have victors story as an example that they don’t exactly die on impact, and it can take a couple of days for them to drown. I mean, he was in the ocean for three or four days, and he was still alive when they eventually lifted him out, although severely rusted. Let’s also keep in mind that in this case, he was in the ocean, which is a body of salt water, versus that engine, who died in a river, which was most likely freshwater, so the death process could’ve been faster in this case than for an engine who died in a body of freshwater.

1:35 I mean the reason why Derek broke down a lot, was simply because he is based on a class 17. Which were described as and I quote being the most unreliable diesel locomotives in British railways history. I do love how they implemented that into his character it’s another cool example of Thomas characters basis being the inspiration and leading towards their design. And it’s what is disappointing about some characters like Rosie

@@ciarangleeson2880 no it’s because she had an interesting base design but they didn’t do anything with it she is based on a USA doc tank which are from America and were brought overseas to work on other railways they could’ve implemented that into a character, it would’ve made her a bit more interesting especially during the BWBA Era. Not that it would’ve made it better but you could’ve tied Rosie into the whole series theme of going around the world because her class is from America they could’ve made her more interesting especially when they gave her that a redesign, but she just ended up slipping into the background again.

It's even more complicated because two of the Class 17's were re-engined, and ended up being much more sucessful. However, they too were scrapped just by association. This adds a whole new layer, a perfectly capable engine being scrapped because it's siblings were unsucessful.

The main reason he has melting higher than being scrapped is due to the possibility of a machine being melted whole vs being taken apart and having components be melted down. Similar to a human being burned alive vs their corpse being burned after inner organs that can be donated for transplants are taken out (corpses don't get burned down but my point still stands).

I feel like the least brutal fate should be running behind schedule, and then breaking down should be just slightly above it. Both of these are just inconveniences, and unless the engine is owned by a particularly cruel company, the worst they’ll get is a telling off. But breaking down means that you would have to go to a repair yard, or if the company is cruel, they might just throw the thing away. While if something is simply running behind schedule, I’ll probably get another chance to prove itself tomorrow.

I have a theory as to why most people assume Henry died (specifically starved to death) in the bricked up tunnel. They think it's a reference to the famous Edgar Allan Poe story The Cask of Amontiliado and to those people I have two points. Point 1: If it were a true reference the tunnel would be on a forgotten bit of track only the Fat Controller knew about but it's out in the open where everyone can see the wall and Henry behind it. 2. If it were a true reference the Fat Controller would have got Henry drunk first (engines can't get drunk)

Sinking is probably the biggest threat for sentient ships and boats, as things like the hull breaking or capsizing is a death sentence, especially when they are on a lake or the ocean, as they'll completely sink to the bottom and become lost. I've seen it happen, just the feeling of inevitable death followed by 20 seconds of pain as they're flattened into a car pancake or a block of mangled metal and plastic depending on the crusher,, and often I see multiple cars crushed at the same time so you already see a crushed corpse when you get there. They then load the flattened cars onto a truck and drive them away, to as far as I am aware of, a smelters Yard

Introducing real-life consequences like being scrapped to the RWS was a stroke of genius on the Reverend Awdrey's part: He loved trains and the railways, so looking at the British Rail scrapping hundreds of steam engines beginning in 1963, showing his characters dreading this fate created empathy and was a great way to spread awareness among his readers. Just one of many examples of real-life helping write the books.

Meanwhile with Duke, he at least got to have a snooze while trapped in his shed, so it was almost like no time had passed for him, while it's implied Hiro was awake for most of his time missing. Plus, he was missing since the construction of Sodor's mainline (early 1900's to presumably the 1960's), while Duke was only missing for about 20 years.

I had a feeling that Smudger, Stanley, Scruffy, The Spiteful Brakevan and Godred were going to be in this video... It's so convenient that "Toad stands by" was going to be shown in this video that I drew this episode some days ago.😊 I'm still triggered to this day of wondering how Salty was able to survive being miles down underwater from night to morning in "Steam Team to the rescue"... "Blue Mountain Mystery" did show the seriousness of feeling guilty for thinking you killed someone by accident as Luke found out. Hurricane getting his wheels melted in "Journey beyond Sodor" was 1 dreadful way of an engine to die... 1 of the most heartbreaking ways of engines being scraped would be in "Tenders for Henry" when Gordon finds out his LNER family except for Flying Scotsman are all dead. Duke wasn't the only character to be forgotten for years. We have Hiro, Glynn, Old Slow Coach and Dexter. You could've added exploding for a brutal fate for engines. Examples like "Rusty and the Boulder", "Thomas, Percy and Old Slow Coach" and "The Great race", Boulder blows up a shed next to Percy, James' fuel tanker train catches fire, and Gordon without his safety valve has his boiler explode which could've killed him from the inside. Buried would've been brutal. Percy got buried alive by coal in "Put Upon Percy" and Skarloey got buried by a snow avalanche and some slate trucks in "Snow". Freezing would be harsh such as in "Jack Frost" for Percy and Terence on an ice lake in "Terence breaks the ice".

Fact check for Rheneas operating the Skarloey Railway by himself. When his valve gear jammed while pulling a passenger train, he pressed on because of the threat of the railway closing down. Skarloey, the namesake engine on this railway, also broke down pulling a passenger train. But where Rheneas felt he *had* to press on, Skarloey *wanted* to. Even though with Skarloey there was no threat of closing down.

My favorite part of this video is definitely the topics of being repurposed because I remember seeing videos and blogs about having express coaches and cabooses being refurbished into motel rooms or even house for people to say in. Sometimes whenever I think about it, I always wonder how would the rolling stock characters in the Thomas universe behave whenever people making loud noises inside of them.

I don't know if this counts as "forgotten", but in Season Five, Scruffy again has another terrible fate. While it isn't confirmed, his face appears on a truck sent hurtling down into a mine. Which promptly collapses. Meaning, there are trucks stuck down in a collapsed mine, unsure if they are going to be rescued (because they are trucks). At least Duke had a chance of being rescued. No one is going to want to save a truck stuck 300 feet underground.
@vibezonegaming

I mean theoretically the trucks probably died from the mine collapsing. Their wood wouldn’t be strong enough to prevent the falling stone from crushing them in that cave.

A big reason for the brutality was the authors opinion on the needless nature of the 1955 Modernization Plan and then the Beeching Cuts, where all steam engines were scrapped for Diesel and Electric engines, and then most of the lines were eliminated after that failed to turn the system around.

I did expect scrapping to be number 1 but I absolutely agree with your order of the final three. But... you did leave out of your list boiler explosions, which we did see once in the show. I would place it just before scrap. Diesels can absolutely explode as well.

As a train enthusiast; i think replacement due to increasing technology is a grim fate and inevitable. Imagine learning the mainland has developed a new engine like the GE AC6000CW, and its safer, more cost effective and has less issues (just as an example) That would mean engines that are on the problem list will be replaced with these new engines and likely sentenced to death by scrapping. And that means engines that hear about this have to fear the terror of eventually being relegated to this fate; or retirement as museum trains.

I think that we should set aside the fate of being left idle as its own thing. Like the fate of being forgotten, this fate also takes a significant mental toll on the victim. If the vehicle is old and severely worn out, as we’ve seen with one or two characters, and their owners/operators are in dire financial straits and don’t think they’re worthy to be fixed, that could leave them quite depressed. No matter how confident or strong they are, they might start questioning their worth, and their mind could wander to dark places such as them believing that it would be better if they were scrapped for money to revitalize the situation for those around them. I think this fate is on the same level as being forgotten, because even if they’re surrounded by people, a deteriorated mental state can make one feel as if they had been forgotten even if they haven’t.

If you're wondering why every chapter shows as commonly skipped to in the timeline, it's because you repeat yourself about five times over for each fate. I only had to hear it once, with an example, to get the idea and then I wanted to know the next one.

Having found out about the train crematorium at Mayer Newman's scrapyard at Snailwell, Cambridgeshire, I am glad that railway vehicles aren't sentient. Diesel/ electric multiple units and carriages with asbestos lining were sent here. They were fired to remove all the internal panelling to make it easier to dispose of the asbestos.
