Russia has done nothing to protect Mali. Islamic terrorists have captured Mali army bases, towns tanks, weapons and getting stronger by the day. Russia too busy protecting gold mines to exploit African resources. Africans still bending over white men and nothing much has changed.

It's true about Eastern DRC we were in Butembo for five years basically monitoring an exclusion zone for M23 from Goma and basically out job was to watch their movements and if they made a move towards Goma from the area they had agreed to stay in, it was our job to intercept them. One of the primary issues that has always been faced by the UN and I say this having been in Somalia and Darfur and the Balkans and so on and so forth, as a part of various non-UN forces attached to peacekeeping operations, is limited mandate for intervention. I am not saying that the UN should have 'an army' per se but the issues that countries raise is not new, they are not wrong, but the UN maybe has less of a role in this capacity since its mandate truly only extends to protecting those directly affiliated with the UN, such as NGOs. My view has largely been and remains, countries have a right to deal with issues of disquiet in this manner, as they deem is fundamentally appropriate under the law, if that means courting forces that are adequately trained and equipped to do these jobs, again, under the law, there are few real solutions, other than. It is an incredibly violent world and people don't see that with their TV dinners and Seinfeld, or whatever.

The issue than becomes, all too often what is the purpose of the UN in that role? The thing is, if you have a job and somebody is there to do the job people think you are supposed to be doing… are you doing that job or something else entirely that you’ve misrepresented the purpose and means of… and I grasp that, that is the entire subject of this program but I mean, the broad atmosphere of the UN mandate and peacekeeper purpose is baked into the idea that a peacekeeper has any mandate to intervene… so, I mean… maybe the question is not the right question(?)

@@dotsmassacre Can't they just talk to each other and find out who can do what? The task is big enough, isn't it? Or are there other reasons why want the UN troups out? Besides it being the propaganda of the day and part if Russias and Chinas effort to destroy the UN, I mean.

If the DRC is upset about the UN PEACE KEEPERS' involvement in protecting DRC citizens, what about the DRC soldiers and police, who should be at the forefront of protecting their citizens? It appears that the DRC government is pointing the finger at someone else, indicating that the government does not want to accept responsibility for their own failure.

It's far more complicated than your analysis... this area sparked Africa's first world war in modern times. It truly lost its sovereignty during leopolds era and is continuing to this day ... and the audacity for some people to ignore and deny history is astounding

@@norman4588 so heres a chatgpt response:....The United Nations Peacekeepers play a significant role in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to the ongoing conflict and instability in the region. The reference to the history of the DRC losing its sovereignty during Leopold's era and the complexity of the situation in the region is relevant to understanding why UN Peacekeepers are involved. The UN Peacekeepers are deployed to the DRC to help maintain peace and stability in a region that has been plagued by conflict, violence, and political instability for decades. Their mission includes monitoring and enforcing ceasefires, protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian assistance, and supporting the Congolese government in its efforts to restore order and stability. The historical context is important because it helps to explain some of the root causes of the conflict and why it has been so persistent. The legacy of colonialism, resource exploitation, ethnic tensions, and the involvement of various armed groups have all contributed to the complex and challenging situation in the DRC. So, in short, the reference to history and sovereignty is relevant to the discussion of UN Peacekeepers in the DRC because it provides context for why their presence is necessary and why the situation in the region is so complicated. @Kiwami says ...SO as you can see, although the BOTS current information on the ground is abit outdated and biased IT also gets it

Peacekeepers need the ability to be flexible while in the field. Being about to arrest/detain and unarm people who don't belong to either the police or the military should be part of their operational abilities. Also, the "don't fire until fired upon" should likewise be changed so that the troops have the ability to use force to prevent atrocities. Without having those tools to utilise in the field, the "bad guys" know that they can break the law right in front of the UN peace keepers & that there is nothing that they could do about it.

The UN peacekeepers are highly restricted in what they can do. Often they are poorly paid and unmotivated troops. Countries supply them in lieu of UN payments.

The key issue is, like with everything, vetting and arbitrated limitations. You always have to view with some scepticism the intentions of a government that wants to in effect 'offshore' its military duties to any other group, in my view. And we've seen these things go horribly wrong. So, I mean, who is 'that' trustworthy? It's a tough nut to crack and I would also wage that very few are 'that' trustworthy.
