I did too and my takeaway is anytime I see a carpenter with one of those in their belt I know for certain not to hire them because their prices need to cover tools that cost 10x what they should.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 5 жыл бұрын
No, not insane. Just high quality tools specifically made and engineered for professionals in the trades to meet their specific needs better than any generic tool could. Everything has trade offs... Generic tools don't ensure maximum efficiency on the jobsite and tools that have to be replaced or can more easily break can cost more in lost productivity as well as wear and tear on the user... Mind, productivity ultimately matters more because the costs to the job in lost productivity can cost far more than the tool ever could and that can add up with every job done. Woodpecker actually makes tools priced this high and higher. They're just a bigger company that covers a wider range of tools and any tool that can be mass produced is going to be significantly cheaper than tools that have to be custom engineered and produced in limited quantity. So they have both cheaper and high priced tools. While neither Incra or Starrett make custom engineered tools in limited runs. So they're not comparable. What they make is mass produced and they're generally not to customize them for a specific trade. There's also significant differences between materials when comparing tools made from aluminum to tools made from titanium... Both are light weight but one is far more durable and long lasting, which for measuring tools also means better accuracy that won't degrade over time and in examples like hammers will also reduce strain on the user. But titanium costs more as the trade off, both in material cost and cost of manufacturing products made from it... Again, there's just always trade offs. High quality tools aren't for everybody but there are reasons why some would choose them for the benefits they can provide.
@Ashe_Fenrir
@Ashe_Fenrir 5 жыл бұрын
@@ZeoCyberG Yeah but there are already high quality tools that are machined within .0001 inch that don't cost that much so I'm wondering why $250 is all.
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG 5 жыл бұрын
@J017 RogueBot - Same reason as anything else in the world that can vary in price, because you're not getting the same thing at a given price point... Tools run from basic and disposable to high end, versatile, and can last a lifetime. For an analogy, let's go with something people may better understand like cars, it's like asking why a Bughatti can cost up to $19 million while a Honda Civic can be less than $30K... There's just simply a world of difference in how they are manufactured, what goes into them, and how they are expected to perform... So tolerances are only one of many things that factor... You can mill wood to .0001 inch but that won't mean it's as good a measuring tool as one made from steel to the same tolerances because you want a tool that will stay in those tolerances. Most tools you're comparing to are made from cheaper metals like aluminum, which is such a soft metal you can even use wood machining power tools on it to cut and shape it... So just imagine how well that works in say a construction site where the tool could get dropped, smashed, knocked around, hit other metal tools that are harder than it, etc... While there's really no comparison between what a product that is mass produced will cost vs one that isn't. Because mass production allows the cost per unit to be reduced to a small fraction. So a manufacturer who can have their product mass produced, in say China that also has very low labor costs, can sell them at a far lower cost than someone in the states who is manufacturing it themselves in limited quantity like this guy is... Trade off being a mass produced product tends to be more generic and can't be just changed or a new design released right away and any design flaws can take a few iterations to work out... Vs tools manufactured more individually that allows for customization and in this case design changes from the feedback of the users that can be released within months instead of years and allow for features the mass producers would not provide because they may be too niche. Then theirs labor and how much work goes into it. A basic tool that only does one thing is going to be cheaper than a tool that is more highly engineered and can do additional things. Most of the tools you're comparing are more basic than this one. For example, that triangle can be used as a wrench to swap out blades at the table saw, as well as be used to set up the table saw for accurate cuts... All of which saves the user time and provides convenience other tools won't, and like I mentioned in my previous post productivity is the number one concern for those in the trades as time is money and lost productivity can cost a worker far more than this tool. Steel would be a cheaper choice but tools made from titanium have the benefit of being forty-five percent lighter than steel, along with much better shock absorbing properties, and so is lighter weight like aluminum but is more durable than aluminum. But titanium cost more than both aluminum and steel, as well as cost more to machine and manufacture into products. So costs are one of the reasons why when you usually see titanium used in a tool that it's usually only a coating and not actually made of titanium. But material choices also effects the user in how much weight, strain to use, how shock absorbing, etc. the tool will be and how likely the tool will break on them and cause injuries that will determine how much wear and tear it puts on the user as yet another cost consideration. Just for hammers, here's a comparison of the basic Titanium hammer to the traditional steel hammers. To show an example of what difference just the choice of metal makes... www.aconcordcarpenter.com/titanium-hammers-vs-steel-hammers.html There's trade offs to everything and tools are simply not all equal or equivalent... These are tools specifically made for people in the trades... People who are going to be putting hundreds to thousands of work hours on them and want to maximize their productivity are the target market.

I've found my laser measuring tool cumbersome to use. It's difficult to hold in a corner and actuate the button. We need better designs. Also, the numbers are way too small to read easily, on mine. I was thinking of something like a pistol grip design with a trigger. Maybe that would work better. Keep it small as it can be to do the job comfortably.

@@bloodgain No pre-drilling ever required, they have a very sharp cutting tip, they have a dual cutting shafts. They go in at the angle you direct them to and they self countersink.
