Honestly there is not a funnier movie from start to finish than this gem of a comedy. From megastar Streisand to Madeline Kahn’s debut role and Ryan O’Neal and everyone else it’s perfectly cast directed and acted - Streisand really is a comedic genius.

It’s Streisand’s best performance and best film, because it’s not an epic and she barely sings it gets downgraded in her pantheon but it’s the most successfully put together movie she was in, it’s gold. Comedy is hard enough in front of a live audience that helps the performers to get the timing and performance right, it’s a million times harder in a movie shot line by line, but Bogdanovich pulled it off big time with perfect casting and not one single dud performance even from the tiny bit parts. A gem.

Peter Bogdanovich was on TCM after What's Up Doc was on. He said Barbra didn't originally think the movie was all that funny. He took her to Radio City Music Hall. Even when 6000 people were howling with laughter, she said people have strange tastes. Later, Barbra told him she now appreciates it's humor.

Thank you for putting together this great collection of scenes. I'm a dedicated movie buff, addicted to TCM, and this is high on my list of favourite movies ever. I was about 10 when it was released, so didn't see it in theatres, but my sister and I watched it every time it was on TV when we were growing up, and we can both recite pretty well the complete script. So many hilarious lines. Buck Henry's brilliant script, Peter Bogdanovich's great directing, and one of the best comedy casts ever. Wish Streisand had done more comedies. Her line deliveries and vocal inflections in this are so funny. Ryan O'Neal was never a great dramatic actor, but he's very funny here and has the perfect understated delivery. And Madeline Kahn is mind-boggling in her brilliance. Love how she uses her voice and her comic timing is priceless. One of my big thrills was seeing her on Broadway later in Born Yesterday, after having loved her so much in this and also in Paper Moon and Young Frankenstein. So sad that she left us so early. For anyone who hasn't seen the great 1930s comedy Bringing up Baby, with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, it was the loose inspiration for this one, and is amazing. Critics when this came out sort of sniffily said it didn't compare to those great screwball comedies, but it absolutely does. One of the reasons Barbra's character keeps calling Howard "Steve" is because the wife of Howard Hawks, who directed Bringing up Baby and was one of Bogdanovich's favourites, also did that with her husband!
