The problem with “clean” products is that the clean term is not regulated. Basically any brand can claim it’s clean and it could mean nothing. The term also implies that other products are “dirty” which is not the case but it makes people afraid to use them. No cosmetic chemist is sitting around thinking “how can I harm the consumers today”. The “yucky” ingredients are actually useful in the formulation of a product and are only yucky for people who have a known allergy or intolerance. So rather than using this marketing ploy, brands should rather cater for people with special needs and mark it as such, but ofc that’s not profitable.

I can appreciate why consumers should be made aware of additives like gluten and other allergens/irritants but I think the beauty community's needs to get over this false dichotomy of clean/dirty makeup - it's not real. Makeup products can cause a reaction to sensitive people and certain products aren't appropriate for people with health conditions but that doesn't make them dirty... furthermore products not containing certain additives doesn't make them clean! I think this is more of an issue with manufacturers needing to be more transparent with their labelling.

I'm a licensed makeup artist (we have to go to college here, not the "I watched a KZbin video, hire me" kind), have studied cosmetic formulation, and own a small indie beauty line. In my opinion, clean beauty is nonsense. There are "chemicals" that are safer than natural. There are "natural" substances that are sensitizing and as "dangerous" or more than "chemicals". The "clean lobby" also cherry picks data or makes stuff up. Like the uproar over parabans, one of the safest and most effective cosmetic preservatives ever. They raised a fuss and had it made a bad word. Now they get formaldehyde releasers because products need something to keep them stable. They were better off with the original, safer parabans. On top of that, the "clean" brands are often much less cosmetically elegant. White casts, crappy blending, dry/flakey, low pigment. I've worked jobs selling cosmetics, too, and gotten more than enough free product from these "clean" brands to play with. Almost always terrible.

@@deemoney6145 Those two models can't be compared. The US doesn't allow any ingredients to be produced with ingredients that are actively harmful to people and neither does the EU. Also the EU bans things that would never be in cosmetics anyways (ex. jet fuel haha). I think more people need to learn about the difference between these models from chemists, cosmetic formulators and toxicologists before immediately saying one is better than the other. Another thing to remember if you wanna do research on this is that correlation does not equal causation (Mike's mic has a great vid on this lol). Hope this helps!

@mygirldarby3 жыл бұрын
The National Celiac Organization says that gluten is not absorbed by the skin. The Mayo Clinic says the same. The only way gluten in a makeup product could possibly cause problems is if you put a gluten containing lipstick all over your lips and ingested big amounts from licking it off and reapplying it numerous times a day. Even then it would be unlikely to have enough gluten to cause a reaction. Maybe if you wore cream of wheat all over your lips and kep licking it off all day it could be an issue, lol.

If you have coeliac disease it really only matters if the gluten touches your small intestine. That is the part of the body that has the allergic reaction. As far as the science is concerned putting something on your face that has gluten in it shouldn’t trigger a coeliac attack. Can we please stop demonizing parabens when they are the safest, least irritating preservative on the market and when most of the alternatives can actually be very irritating. Methylisothiazolinone is frequently associated with allergic reactions.

I feel the same way about sulfates in shampoo. The only thing sulfates are guilty of is drying your skin/hair. Moisturize and condition. Problem solved.
@stephanieandrews73833 жыл бұрын
@@justkibby5959 Exactly! For some people shampooing with sulfates is really essential for breaking up built up oil and product, which can actually cause breakage. Another example: demonizing chemical sunscreen

@@stephanieandrews7383 my husband had melanoma a few years ago so we use alot of sunscreen and as long as it screens the uva uvb rays it works for us lol. I dont think the alternative ones work as well either. So.... would you rather put "cHeMiCalS" on your skin or would you rather have CANCER on your skin??? 🤣

@@zizzie4081 it is. There is no evidence for a link between beauty products and reactions, it's all marketing. The only issue is, like Tati said, using it around the mouth as you can accidentally ingest some.
