Climate Emergency Forum

6 ай бұрын

Special guest Julie Johnston joins Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez to discuss the upcoming Conference Of the Parties, COP28 to be held in Dubai, UAE beginning on November 30th.
This video was recorded on November 14th, 2023, and published on November 19th, 2023, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.
The importance of hosting the COPs in different regions to facilitate a broader attendance was mentioned along with the significance of including the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region due to predictions of extreme climate changes rendering parts of it uninhabitable. The forum touched upon the history of COPs, highlighting the first conference in Berlin in 1995 and the Kyoto Protocol established in the third COP in Kyoto.
Julie Johnston shared a heartfelt message urging women attending COP to represent mothers, grandmothers, and all of humanity in climate discussions. She added a perspective on ecological responsibility, calling for compassion and courageous advocacy at COP28.
The subsequent discussion involved participants expressing their views on COP negotiations, highlighting the deceptive nature of some agreements, the urgent need to address fossil fuel subsidies, and the potential consequences of climate change on future generations.
The forum participants also discussed the disconnect between government negotiators and the broader public and the critical role of activists in holding leaders to account. The discussion underscored the urgency of addressing climate change and the importance of COP28 in shaping global climate policies.

50-70,000 attendees to the next COP, most will travel by jet, to see a collection of "tedious" displays (Paul's words) when they could easily set up power point displays online, and attend from home. This could make the conference available to the public, and further disseminate this vital information. By the way, Dubai is getting flooded TODAY.🤔 An unusual occurrence?

Julie says "we can't eat oil". Yes but we sort of do in an indirect way. The whole green revolution of agriculture from the mid 20th century on depends on fossil fuel inputs in the form of fertiliser, pesticides, machinery and transport. Modern agriculture is the use of land to turn petrochemical products into food. Our population has increased from 1 billion in 1800 to 8 billion today, 3 doublings in 200 years, and largely on a once only available endowment of fossil fuels. We need to downsize because we are in overshoot.

Their denial of declaring the 1.5° goal to be officially failed (which is obvious)... could it be for legal reasons? UNFCC calls the goal "legally binding", it seems to be related to international law and in some countries there are already related lawsuits against governments and companies. I wonder if an official declaration of 1.5° failure would allow developing countries to enforce huge damage compensation payments from GHG emitters by court? So, is it "what must not fail cannot fail"?

Nice sentiments from Julie about what women should ask for at the conference. But the bit about "a thriving economy" is a normie meme too far. It is "thriving economies" which has increased energy consumption and by extension, global warming. We not not a "thriving economy" but a "reducing economy", returning to the non human segment of the biosphere what has been taken from it. We need to question thriving economies, not blindly accept the concept as a sacred cow.

To do better for other species we have to downsize the entire humanity in population, energy use and economic activity, be it with clean, dirty, finite or renewable energy. One day, we will all be Palestinians. Paul knows where all this is going. My respect for him increases. This is about Overshoot. Not climate change, which is a symptom of Overshoot. All human activity, in all contexts, must contract. It will contract. Voluntarily or involuntarily. This is called Collapse. There will never be any significant deliberate remediation or mitigation of climate change. The only path now, is adaptation. Even that is a throw of the dice. A very smart person said, “You must play the game. You cannot win. You cannot break even. You cannot quit the game.” In reference to Zeroth Law and thermal equilibrium. I suppose you/I will have achieved thermal equilibrium when we are dead. Steps taken during a walk are a series of interruptions to an inevitable and final fall.

COP28... 75,000 people turning up, many by private jet, staying in 4-5 star motels, all patting themselves on the back that they're "doing something". Air travel aside, I'm horrified to think of the A/C energy usage alone, as I'm sure not one of the attendees would stand for 43 degree C heat. (Unlike the regular workers, of course, who have no such luxury.) The enormity of the of carbon footprint of this "climate change forum" would be hilarious if it wasn't so perverse. And at the same time they demand us mere mortals switch off our AC and take the train everywhere.

Concern for the future of children and hence humanity is laid bare in Gaza. It is extremely troubling and doesn't give any confidence in consideration for the health and safety of all generations yet to be born! What is called modernity, that 'scientific technological' progress that has gone into overdrive in the last 50-70 years, has merely enchained even ourselves into tools of self-annihilation all facilitated by warped wealth accounting mathematics transmitted by west European colonial terror in the name of trade and 'becoming wealthier'. It is that simple, yet 'experts and specialists' cling to their self-importance and status devising 'technical' solutions that will continue to fail humanity and all life beyond humanity to avert this evolving catastrophic biosphere apocalypse. Apologies for being very negative here but I'm afraid the COP process is dulling our own agency and imagination by allowing them to empower themselves by disempowering us. They don't have answers that are viable because they're ensnared in the ideology that Man has dominion over Earth and therefore is its master and can shape and mould it to his image. There is no humility and due to this it is a failed process. Such mass gatherings are hubris and full of expert hubris. Better for national governments to support local community COPs to work together to both reduce carbon and heat emissions by focusing on Net Zero Heat Emissions(NZHE) rather than Net Zero Carbon Emissions and build re-generative communities from the ground up. This should be the only agreement from the current COP process. Focusing on NZHE also has the benefit of reducing carbon emissions. These community COPs can also network and share ideas to accelerate the transition. Reparations and damages are important to address the injustices of evil imperialism, colonialism and damages due to climate chaos, but achieve this in parallel while community COPs engage with applying grassroots solutions that will reveal the inhumane and unjust systems of control and exploitation practiced by narcissistic psychopathic imperial colonialists and neo-colonialists. This will present the evidence and arguments that reparations are completely justified. It's time to move on from this format of COP and give the COP to the grassroots to get on with implementing solutions.

The only way to heal ourselves and to heal the earth is by growing our own food. Regenerative agriculture is our only hope. If everyone would get off their asses and start building community gardens we could turn this train around. Unfortunately, I'm seeing that it's going to take a traumatic event to wake people up. Only then will anyone get off their ass and start building community gardens because at that point we won't have any other choice. If people want to eat in the future we will have to incorporate urban farms into our communities. Delaying this is only going to cost lives and make it harder for ourselves in the long run.

I find myself disinterested in how women or men 'show up' or feel (motherly, fatherly or whatever) and more interested in what they do. If showing up with a particular identity inside is helpful (i can see how it could be) I'm interested in hearing what types of behaviors at the conference are going to be helpful, and then how certain states of identity can encourage those behaviors. Identity is important, but not when it becomes the central focus. Productive behaviors need to be the main focus. An example might be something like, "We need to stop pretending government isn't corrupted by big oil, and your maternal self can grasp the actual urgency of our situation, in these ways.."
