I always buy in bulk on pretty much everything, one I'm a cheap bastard and two, It keeps me stocked so I don't have to re-order anytime soon, one think is for sure and that is the prices never go down over time, they very seldom even stay the same. Some time back I bought a lot of the comic book plastic frames to display my books of real value and did not even open them, now the price for these has risen a lot and now I'm thinking about listing them on ebay and way cheaper than sending off the CGC, etc. thanks for a great show.

I frequent 4 LCS in my city. Only one of them sells bags and boards at a price I can afford, so I only get bags and boards from the one LCS. I recently started rebagging my older comics to the silver sized bags. If the board isn't worn or smudged, I keep them.

It can definitely add up and be wasteful not getting the most out of the bag and board. I used to replace it anytime the bag got slightly wavy, but then I realized it was still doing it thing and my preference for a smooth and shiny bag was meaning i changed bags ever 7-16 months...

the mylars were even higher because e. gerber was so backed up they weren't taking orders. If you buy direct from them (have to call and place order), they sell in lots of 1000 from much cheaper than what you showed here. They just weren't accepting orders until sometime this month (not sure if they're back going). Massive shortage in plastic and boards.

I was about to write "buying in bulk" right when you got to that point in the video. I bought 10 bags of bags, 10 bags of boards, and 10 long boxes all in the same order to get that 25% discount. They were back ordered and it took about 3 months to get everything but when I got my delivery I now don't have to worry about bags and boards for a long while. Yes it did cost a pretty penny but I was going to spend that money anyway over time.

Spending less is spending less when you know you'll use them. The first time I bought bulk and didn't even think about new bags and boards for two years I realized it was the only way. It seems like a lot at the time, but it's nice to save money every place you can in a hobby like this. Also it's great to not be halfway through rebagging a new collection and realize "damn, I'm not gunna be able to finish this."

I purchased some silver age bags and boards for roughly 60. 300 bags and boards in total. I bought some current bags and boards and most ended up being to small for the books. That latter was a good deal of wasted money because I can't use them.

The shop I usually go to for new comics sells boards for 15.99 right now and bags at 11.99. Thankfully I have a closer comic shop that has 100 pack of boards for $12 and bags at $9.99.

im still new to the comic world, but I have done a few ways to get more boards or atleast upgrade the current boards I have. here me out sounds insane but i have done it. I might a mini lot of comics (only to keep literally on e or two of them .Then the next day I took them to my local comic shop and said are you intrested in these? They said yes, whats your price and I was honest with them as said only this comic and can you throw in a handfull of bags and boards? I say, They dont have to be new , slighly used would do. i ended up getting more bags and boards that way. They werent the fancy ones. Another way i got bags/boards is I buy on different websites big lot of graded comics books, sent immediate payment with a message saying hey if you have extra or going to throw bags and boards out could I have them. Most of the time they say sure, especially if you buy a lot from them. It wont work every time, but its just like going comic hunting you dont know until you ask! Have a great day!

My LCS puts all of there new comics into new bags and boards regardless if you have a pull list or don't. Also when I buy collections I put the comics I want in New bags and boards and I recycle the old ones for future sales. So I have a ton of older bags and boards for that purpose but WILL NEVER pass up FREE comic supplies. Thanks for the content your putting out there. I really enjoy your channel.

My L C S bags every comic and just puts a few cents to the price of the book so when i bagged, boarded and boxed my collection recently i kept all of the bags so have 1000+ in a shopping bag so they have come in handy for eBay purchases (some of the bags sellers use have a musty smell)

Random and late to the game but you might be surprised to learn that boards are actually in high demand and a completely different way. Comic book boards are being used by quilters to roll their fabric into small mini bolts of fabric on their shelves. The acid free boards are excellent for that purpose and so quilters are snapping up the boards and creating an interesting demand on the supply.

My local shop puts them in bags and boards as they get supplies, it’s been 4 months since they offered the books I want for sale. They have them in their office but they won’t put them out without bags and boards. They said they’d call me as my titles are released…they called me once for one book since November. I got lucky a few months back when my daughter picked up 200 silver boards for me for a good price at a shop in Edmonton. I went to that shop this past weekend and the guy behind the counter hasn’t seen any since.

I've been buying Silver Age size bags and boards for years and put 2 books in each bag, back to back, with 1 board in between. When you are talking thousands of comics, it really saves some money over time. It also saves a bit of space in each box , having used less boards. Keep up the great channel!!!

I envy those of you who can do this. I put two books into a bag and look at it and immediately I'm like "ah but now this cover has tape over it" and what if I can only find single sided acid free boards... The nice thing doing like your doing is that you natural stagger spines in the box so as not to get any annoying unevenness.

One thing I like to do in addition to buying in bulk is order from wholesale producers. You have to buy more because they have minimums, but if you were already planning on buying bulk it's easy to do. My most recent purchase, I paid about $0.15 per bag and $0.32 per board.

The only way i save money on b&b is that i only b&b my core collection,and most valuable issues.the rest are neatly kept in short boxes.i never actually waste any b&b unless they are so yellowed and brittle.i use older ones for my less valuable issues etc.

The price for 1000 boards from BCW was $106 in May/2021. As of today, 3/2022, it is $110 which isn't a huge difference. If you have a few buddies you can split the box with and order soon, before the prices shoot up, it'll soften the blow to the wallet.

Best way to save money while collecting comics is to be patient and trade!!! Don't buy something on eBay just cause it's there. I've gotten fantastic deals on books at flea markets, garage sales, and in dollar bins. Also don't be afraid to trade every once in a while too.

Good topic. For me, I'm trying to resist buying bags/boards of any kind until I really need to. That being said, here are a couple savings ideas: 1. I don't use the same bag/board size/style for every book. For most books I use a Silver poly bag and board but there are a couple exceptions. For modern books that have little/no value I may use a basic current poly bag and skip the board altogether. A little riskier when it comes to taking damage but I try to store them in fuller boxes so they stay relatively protected anyway. At the other end of the spectrum, I bought some Mylar bags and boards from eGerber before the prices skyrocketed and was using those to start re-bagging and boarding my collection starting with my oldest books first. Since the price increase I've really slowed my roll on when and where I use them. When I do use Mylar I put 2 books in each bag, once on each side of the board. Those boards are acid free all the way through so they can have a book on each side. This cuts the per book price in half. 2. I like the idea of buying in bulk but I don't always have the funds to drop in one transaction. I have a fixed monthly comic budget which has to cover new books, back issues AND supplies. If you know others near you who collect you could team up and share the cost. That way you can pay less per bag/board without having to by hundreds or a thousand at a time. When it comes to wasted bags and boards, I know I've thrown out my fair share. At the same time, my best practice is to wait on rebagging and reboarding for now and just make sure each book is in something for protection. Like you, I also use an online service for my new books and get the bag/board on all shipments. Unfortunately, my service has not been immune to shortages either so there have been times when even they don't have supplies to use.

I always just think of this old dude I knew who collected all throughout the late sixties and seventies. Bagged and boarded nothing and kept his books in boxes all over the place. Classic reader and a great guy. When it was time to sell it was heartbreaking... looking at books that were only read once but in mid grade and worse where your like "This books could have been a 400$ book, this could have been a 1200$ book, this goes for thousands in a 9.4..." he got a quarter of what he could have even if they had just been sorted out a decade or two earlier and a fraction of what he would have got if he was one of those oddballs back in the day who put their books away neatly...

I remember this schmuck going into to my lcs one day in 2018 and being that guy who manhandles a bunch of books on the rack and asked the owner about every key behind the counter and then saying "yeah, I got that, I have that..." then he picked up some bags and boards and said " I actually just came in for these". He puts them on the counter and asks the shop owner "can you match amazon". Owner says "man, the margins are what they are how am I gunna be a small business and match amazon on things". Meanwhile I pull up the same supplies on amazon and show this asshole that the shops price is actually slightly cheaper... Gary, the owner, just looks at the guy and says "well, what a moron am I huh?"

I've been using both sides of the bag/board to store comics. It not only helps cut the need for bag and board in half, it's easier to keep track of the books when they are together in twos. For a lot of the 4 issue minis a Silver age bag will fit 4 comics, alternating spines 2 in front, 2 in back easy and then you have the whole run in one bag. I also have a shit ton of boards that are of seemingly different widths from years of collecting, I bought a few packs of bags and took a big stack of those old non fitting boards to the local Fed Ex store while I was making some copies and used their paper cutter to get that all down to uniform size to fit in the bags. Buying bags and boards at the same time from Amazon is a lot cheaper than going the LCS route too. 100 bags and 100 boards is $25. Which is outrageous still, but that's the going rate right now.

I store everything in MyLites2 and Full Backs. Talk about expensive...BTW, I collect mostly DC from the Bronze Age, which is why I store them in MyLites. The few modern books I pick up go into the regular B & Bs. Over the few years that I have been back into serious collecting, I have likely tossed out 500+ regular B & Bs, many of them brand new, in favor of MyLites2. Also, you can still get Mylites a bit cheaper from EBAY sellers.

I go to two comic book shops. One of them always bags and boards their comics and the other one doesn’t. However the one that doesn’t was selling bags and boards for 0.49. I don’t know they are still doing that. I haven’t been to that shop since last year in November. I have heard once that it’s hard to get bags and boards due to the supply demand. But the first comic shop that I go to are selling bags and boards in bulk for $15.00. I feel like buying long and/or short boxes would be something I would recommend until it’s affordable again. Or if you can buy bulk. But that’s just my idea.

Why would anybody order E Gerber products off of Amazon when you can order directrly from E. Gerber for a fraction of the cost, especially if you order in bulk? With that being said E. Gerber is out of boards due to a worldwide paper shortage. My advice, just stack your comics (small alternating stacks, don't want spine rolls) in a dark, dry place and wait it out until things get back to normal.

I just bought what you’re giving away. There’s simply no way to save on bags and boards unless you order bulk, or use an online service like my Comics shop. I hate to not use an LCS but online is the best way to go now to save and for good condition. Eventually all LCS will be gone in the next 5 years. Just like Blockbuster. My question is BCW boards seem to be warping. How bad is that long term? I’ve only wasted about 1,000 bags and boards which isn’t bad considering I’ve got 6k comics

I've got a place that specializes in collectable supplies. Not just comic book supplies but cards, magazines, albums and so forth. They are reasonable. I pay around $20 to $25 for my bags and boards. They buy in bulk. The number of boards that I've wasted is more than the bags.

What I do is go to the Zocalo is like the center of México City and buy a little bit bigger bags so its way cheaper it only cost me like 50 pesos about 2.50 dollars for 100 bags and with tape just adjust the diference and for the board I usually just buy the ones I need for the comics I just bought right in my LCS

Now that that’s out-of-the-way one may want to consider having there runs a Comics doubled up so on the front and back of each board there is another comic nearby using one bag and one board for two comics the price may have doubled but you’re still spending the same amount

My LCS always gives out bags and boards for every comic you buy, unless they are out, but then they'll give them to me as soon as they come in, no longer than a week, it seems really weird to me that some shops out there wouldn't do that, in fact, I've had 3 LCS's in my life that I regularly bought new books from and all of them did this, I would question how much those other LCS's care about their customers, comic books in general, and especially their customers comics.

My LCS has a good stock of bags and boards and have not raised prices terribly, just whatever the difference they are paying to meet their margins. I also don’t mind supporting them since they have been good to me over the years. As far as money and the hobby goes, I try to let the hobby fund itself. I’ll pick up deals to hopefully sell to keep my PC growing. I admit it’s been tougher in the past two years with all the speculators joining the hobby. But, if I can help someone get something they are hunting while finding my hunt it works well.

I always have more bags than I do boards. Anything that isn’t a key or that’s a reader copy doesn’t need a board. Anything that is worth a pretty penny or means something to you. Keep it fresh in a bag and board.

Because of this we buy silver bags and boards in bulk usually about 1000 at a time. We also use mycomicshop for all of our new books so those are covered. We also save boards and bags when I decide to get rid of any books we have I keep the bags and boards and sell the books without. I also use any and all the old boards I find as filters/spacers in boxes. Before BCW got so backed up they would sell boards in bulk 1000 just not packaged. Now we have moved from place to place to get the bags and boards and def slowed down some.

I love your takes on things and hope to have a show like yours someday, I watched a video of a guy telling of a the mistakes collectors make and one was putting all comics in bag and boards, He said don't,they all don't need it I think it's nice when comics are not over produced and it gives them value,but bags and boards?? So if the cost of boards and is going up, and the cost of shipping is driving them up, people will be buying less. That means that over time there will be fewer copies that were protected than when board prices are low. Combined with extremely low print runs, this could be a recipe that results with a ton of key issues from the era not having very many 9.8s in the future, relative to numbers on current keys from the 90s.

Just to let everyone know. All paper is now made acid free. you can buy heavy weight card stock and it will be fine. Acid has not been used in making paper for over 20 years. I have been in the printing business for over 20 years. This whole claim of acid free is just to get you to buy their paper.

This is a very timely video--thanks for addressing this issue all in the hobby have been experiencing. I've had to result to paying the scalpers' prices for Mylites 2 and fullback boards (about $100 per 50) for my best comics. Lower grades have been doubled up (front & back with a backing board between) in older bags and boards. First it was the scalpers charging astronomical prices for graphics cards, now it's hitting bags & boards for comics. First world problems I guess.

my entire collection is stored doubled up (front & back with a backing board between) in silver aged sized bags/boards (modern are just too slim) and I've always done it that way because then the staple-side thickness makes things uneven. Most of my stuff is reader copies anyway

You should order in bulk directly from e gerber. I bought 1000 mylites and 600 boards for about $350. I know it’s not cheap but they will probably last me a lifetime since only put my better comics in Mylar.

If you can get a hold of some bags and boards I'd say bag and board by value. Make sure the books that are most important get bagged and boarded. Also if changing bags and boards reuse the old bag and board on lesser valued books within reason. If dull and cloudy or the board is bent or worn I'd trash them. Also I'd check for alternative ways to score bags and boards. See if any shops nearby (besides your lcs) have bags and boards. Check with fellow collectors. Maybe someone has a surplus of bags and boards and will cut you a deal for some. And if worse comes to worse switch books of lesser value that are bagged and boarded for new books that are not bagged and boarded. Then store the unbagged and boarded books somewhere safe until you can your hands on some more bags and boards.

What I started doing is putting 2 comics in 1 bag, separated by 1 board. I was able to free up half of my bags n boards for other comics. Why didn’t I think of this years ago?

It sucks for me because I use the same bag and boards (bcw silverage resealable) for every book. It bothers me alot if they are different sizes and edges.
