In general, I think Patreon is much better at supporting quality content because it rewards money-worthy content instead of click-bait worthy content. KZbin doesn’t make a distinction between the two because ads are shown on worthless click-bait just as much as actual content.

You may not realise this as someone in the US, but the join button has a big advantage over patreon for people overseas: you can pay in currencies other than $. Every time I pay patreon in the UK it costs more than expected because of conversion fees going to my bank. And that's not counting variation caused by exchange rates. That's a big disincentive for me. Predictability is important to encouraging responsible consistent support.
@valkirk86446 жыл бұрын
So donate less to cover the costs. With Patreon only taking 5% instead of the 30% KZbin takes, Hank would probably still make out better!
@Ellyerre6 жыл бұрын
5 USD is a lot less than 5 GBP though, are the conversion fees that high? Like, would it be better to pay 5 quid here rather than the equivalent of 5 dollars on patreon? Charging the "same" in USD, GBP and EUR always felt a weird move to me.
@IanGoggin6 жыл бұрын
@@valkirk8644 but the point is that 1. The conversion costs are invisible at the point of sign-up. 2. Conversion inherently means I am paying a different amount every month which is unpredictable. Reducing the amount paid solves neither problem.

I like Patreon because it’s separate. Sure, creators advertise that they have one/do cool stuff on it, but it’s its own platform and doesn’t hinder the KZbin experience. My concern with the membership thing is it’s just going to create a greater divide between those who can and can not pay. This feels like pitting fans against each other while Patreon feels extra/additive. Of course this is all too early to say and maybe the membership thing will be rad. We’ll see. 🤷🏻♀️

I, though I fully understand the why of the join, don't like them... While I doubt Hank will do so, many of the other channels I follow use the feature and it creates a divide among subscribers. It creates inequality within the fandom and kinda ostracizes those of us who can't afford to contribute. Again, not Hank specific. There are actually channels I love, that I rarely watch anymore because they cater so heavily to those who can pay. I wish this wasn't the direction KZbin was going in, but (again) I get it...KZbinrs deserve to have consistent income. TLdr; memberships do create a bad experience for users. Especially, when users can't afford to pay for the shinny new content... Hopefully, the Nerdfighter community will try to prevent inequality from increasing as a result of its use.

I think the difference is whether it's framed (by the creator and the community) as "getting something extra" or "missing out on part of what makes people engaged with the community". If, for instance, Hank was going to do streams INSTEAD of something else that he currently does for "free", that would be a problem. If it's really just an extra non-essential thing then I don't see it as a problem. Of course, I also think Hank is thoughtful enough about these things that he won't do things like giving big news to people behind a paywall early. That really would have a negative effect on community.

"I'll make them bad. I promise; they'll be terrible." I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this aspect. Giving creators the ability to have paid, exclusive content will often lead to a greater focus on that content and less on the freely-available content. Unless they have the moral fortitude to deny themselves the potential income, it's a natural side-effect of operating under this sort of classist system if their content is at all popular. The "exclusivity option" seems to create a lose-lose situation, and most probably don't even realize it because it's easy to do incrementally without ever intending to promote your richest audience members at the expense of the rest. I'm really glad that Complexly (and the other parts of your business) has done so much to avoid this and maintain its mission, and I expect you've thought a lot about this conundrum as part of that.

I love John and Hank because you would never be able to tell how successful/impactful they've been just by looking at their videos/various channels. They don't have millions of views per video or super fancy editing that someone else does for them. They just sit and talk about things they care about and yet they've both written best selling novels, have a dozen channels between them, a successful merch store, a fully recognized charity that's raised over a million dollars for a plethora of causes, ones a professional musician and inventor, the others technically an actor/producer and together they are basically THE internet based content convention people. Like Vid con is so huge that I think a lot of people are under the impression that KZbin itself started it. And no, Hank and John did. Susan can't speak at Vid con unless Hank says she can. And you'd never guess that just by watching their videos. Don't get me wrong, their videos are super awesome and I've been watching them since pre TFiOS days, but they're not viral videos. The ones on their gaming channel and here rarely even have enough views to have ads on them. If you didn't know that Hank was a Vlog brother and only knew him from this channel (and didn't really know what the stuff he's come up with are in a larger context) you wouldn't really know that he was "famous" And I really like that. I like that they're proud of their animals giving birth/mating videos and still answer 'who the eff is Hank" and have pizzamass. And I don't know why I chose a video on Hank's side channel from 9 months ago to make this comment on but it seemed appropriate. He just seemed like a small time niche content Creator and not a best selling novelist/founder of vidcon/nerdcon/podcon/Dftba.com/2D glasses/musician/etc It's the Neil Cicierega effect.

Exactly this. For the part of the service that KZbin provides (letting me use one of their thousands of servers for a few minutes to watch a video, and that's really it), the tiny bit of ad revenue they get for a video view is plenty. There's no reason for them to take $1.50 a month from each "joiner" other than greed.

Thanks for your perspective on advertising. Just like real estate and money, I consider advertising one of humanity’s necessary evils, and it’s nice to hear (human to human) that you lean away from it whenever feasible. My impression, based on my experience as a viewer but also from creators' discussion of their interactions with the platform and the various ways that it's gone against both (demonetization, hostile ads in front of LGBT+ videos, etc.) is that KZbin ranks advertisers as their #1 customer, with creators as #2 (since they're bringing in the monetizable eyeballs), and those eyeballs as #3. We're the source of the money, ultimately, but it means they (YT) serve the interests of those above us in the hierarchy to make use of us. That longer watch time isn't for us - many of the means they use to try to get it are distinctly off-putting and even counterproductive - it's for the advertisers. Creators benefit from it as a secondary, and gets categorized as "appease the algorithm to succeed".

@JokesInBase136 жыл бұрын
I think it will probably stay pretty low tbh, largely because of the fixed price. $5 isn't a huge amount of money for someone who has a typical amount of disposable income, but let's say you have $20/month to spend on creator support, that's only 4 creators you can help out and you have to give them the same amount, whereas if you go somewhere like Patreon you can spread that same $20 over 6-8 creators, or perhaps distribute more of your resources to small channels with a limited number of patrons just staring out who may be trying to invest in better equipment and just give a $2 token of appreciation to a massively popular channel who already have a large number of patrons to support them. Especially once you realize that a bigger cut of the money goes to the creators via Patreon. It's not that the audience isn't engaged, it's just that they get more bang for their buck on other donation platforms. Now if KZbin were to add a $5 Super Chat type button to the videos where it is a one-time donation for some perk specific to the comments section of that video (perhaps a new tab with a running list of usernames that donate), I think that would spread like wildfire on this platform.

Such a cute fishy!!! Maybe one of these days. Though I can't wait to see how Hank will make the live streams suck. 😉One of these days I'll get a fishy, just not now.

Iii really don't want to miss out on the livestreams even if they are really bad, because I, y'know, have watched literally every video you've made since vlogbrothers began and to be honest it makes me a little sad that I can't afford this exclusive thing and I was wondering if it would be possible to have recordings of the livestreams posted afterwards so that members can participate in the chat and stuff but non-members can still watch?

Do you get extra perks for being a member of your own channel, because that’d be fun. Like a gold Hanklerfish. Also, it supporting CrashCourse and SciShow makes me all warm and fuzzy. I love those channels and they have inspired me to get more into SciComm.

I'm not sure what my opinion is on 'Join,' but I'm glad there is at least one alternative to Patreon. As great as it is, I don't think it's good to have just one company doing something so important. If the company had to shut down for some reason, so many livelihoods would be in jeopardy.

So if I only have the money to do one, should I pick Patreon or KZbin memberships? Pros and cons of each?

I wish I had the kind of skills that would lend itself to Patreon support. I would love to be making stuff for fans. But the weird stuff I make is too niche and obscure for it to work, sadly. So tempting when I see so many creators use the platform so effectively, but sadly impractical for me.
@MRuby-qb9bd6 жыл бұрын
You might not be able to make a living at it but you should go for it a little bit anyway. Sometimes it's the niche stuff that makes out the best because the people who do like it can't get much of it anywhere else and you don't have mainstream competition to worry about.

Do you have any insight into which channels got the join button? I just would never have guessed hankschannel would get one. It's basically the only Green Bros related channel I would've bet against.
@amys31686 жыл бұрын
I only use mobile and I don’t see it. But I’ve heard it’s $5 a month. That’s a 6th of my KZbin budget. I do premiere and many patreon. I just don’t think I can put that much on one creator. I want everyone to thrive! One of my favorites only does the KZbin membership, so I just try to buy their merchandise when I can.

I'd love it if the creator had the option to allow viewers to "Join" for free, like a pay what you want kind of model. Everyone gets a hanklerfish!

As long as attention is the highest-value currency, the incentives will continue to be perverse. I have a strong preference for Patreon for this reason.

Honestly I'm not sure what I feel about the feature itself but I am not outright opposed to it, but what I really dislike about it is the terminology used. "memberships" and "joining" have a lot of potential implications of divisiveness and exclusion of those unwilling or especially problematically unable to pay, since not being a "member" or not having "joined", even if it might not be so in the specific situation, to me have strong connotations of not being part of a community, that "patron" or even "subscriber" do not (you can read a newspaper you are not subscribed to either by purchasing single issues, visiting a library or getting it from a friend, you cannot be a member of a club without having "joined" it one way or another). This is not to say that I necessarily think all content should be freely available under a "pay what you want model" (even though I think it's a great form of doing things in the places where it is viable), but that I feel the terminology is potentially quite problematic in communities that subscribe strongly to the idea of the content being available to everyone regardless of economic ability and who value thoughtful, effortful, interesting contributions rather than monetary ones as their basis.

Hey Hank, I dunno if you'll see this comment or maybe someone else will. I'm starting to get in to vlogging, I've got a few videos uploaded on an alt channel that I'm not quite comfortable posting about right now but I'm just recording on my phone. I'm looking for a good starter camera but anywhere I turn I'm running in to people recommending $500+ cameras. I can't afford to do that, and am wondering if you (or anyone else) could make some recommendations for a starter setup that's under about $100-150?
