My only argument with bridge to terabithia is that the role of queen is usually for the woman a king marries. If his sister were queen that'd be creepy since they're related.

Personally, I think Tiana from Princess and the Frog has the best message out of all the princesses. Where the message from most of them is 'I want this' or I wish for that', Tiana's message is 'I'm gonna work my but off to GET this, and nobody's gonna stop me.' That's a really great message for the munchkins.

Ariel's kind of a badass if you think about it. The first time she saved Eric, she swam to shore using one hand to carry him and another to move, did so rather easily through a very torrential hurricane, and when they got to land, she didn't seem all that winded in the morning. You can argue that maybe she rested, but if she really put in enough effort for that, wouldn't that increase the chance of him possibly waking up first?
@thrackerzodthefandomnerd4267
@thrackerzodthefandomnerd4267 5 жыл бұрын
Half her body is a powerful fish tail, I think she'd easily have it covered. You're thinking of it in a human perspective, she's spent her whole life in the ocean and has most likely been in a couple hurricanes before, seeing as how her father 'controls the sea'. She out swam a shark because she saw something shiny
@aconfusedbuzzard526
@aconfusedbuzzard526 5 жыл бұрын
@@thrackerzodthefandomnerd4267 But also think about it this way- when her father tells her not to go to the surface, he means no where NEAR the surface, too. If you've ever gone swimming and dived under the water, you could argue that though the pressure is greater deep (which mermaids would be accustomed to), mobility is much easier, because torrents don't exist down there. And almost all scenes in the actual sea kingdom take place way down deep, where no torrents exist. No matter how many hurricanes the five-foot surface experiences, the lower kingdom doesn't experience any of it, so she's NOT actually used to hurricane weather. As well, if her father controls the sea, wouldn't he decrease currents where the mermaids live?

Alot of the male princes have zero personality too. All they do is look handsome and charming and go save the woman. the men are never asked whether or not they are ok with this or convey how they feel about going into danger to save someone they hardly know. They just do it because, he is a man and she is a woman. the gender norms go both ways and they are equally harmful.

It's supposed to be a way to also show character building. In the beginning, he's stuck up on the passed. This is why I like Twilight Sparkle as a Princess, she takes a proactive role in her duty...even if most of the time it's confined to a single town. She has expressed a desire to do more with her role, hell she even had a song about it. And she's more than willing to step into the ring to defend her subjects. When Tirek was assaulting her nation she fought him to a stalemate...by firing FUCKING KAMEHAMEHAS at him! The only reason she lost was because Tirek resorted to a hostage situation to get her to surrender.

I really like how the princess title is used in the 1995 movie A Little Princess; growing up mostly in India, Sarah is told by one of the regular women there that "all women are princesses it is our right." Sarah reiterates this to the "villain", Miss Minchin, when she's told that if she still considers herself a princess to "look in the mirror". Sarah says some of the most poignant words about the word princess and how it's used: "I am a princess; all girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics, even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young; they're still princesses. All of us."

When I was analyzing My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I realized that the highest title for Equestria was Princess. Then it hit me. G4 had Greco-Roman motifs, and prince and princess came from the ancient Roman title "princeps", which meant "the First".

My problem with princesses is the hypocrisy of what princesses represent vs. what women truly aspire to be. Don't get me wrong, if you're a little girl between 7 and 9 years old, then there's not a lot of aspiration there because as a kid, you're not expected to achieve much. The issue is when women carry that mind frame to adult hood like a lot of them do. I've dated a couple of women in my life that were male dependent because they had the mindset of a princess, either figuratively or literally. That just doesn't help women in the ultimate goal of independence that a lot of women these days strive for.
@victorcates9330
@victorcates9330 8 жыл бұрын
the messages are problematic because girls of age 4 will watch these films hundreds of times. I'm not sure a child of this age really needs messages about relationships. Even the newer films desperately hammering in messages of independence at such a young age is kinda weird. I have to think modelling just getting along and mutual respect is a better message.

I know I'm really pulling this out of left field here, but in Magic Mike XXL they made a DISTINCT point at making sure the women were all refereed to as 'queens' and NEVER princesses, it was to emphasise their strength and status as an individual person in control of their body and choices. My only Princess hate is that Kida and Gisselle aren't officially included (when meeting the two requirements of being a "Disney" "princess"), but Mulan is somehow included as a "Disney Princess" when she was neither royal nor married a royal. She's rumored to be an honorary princess like how Zsa Zsa Gabor's ninth husband (Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt) was only an honorary prince because he paid a German royal for adult adoption. My favorite Disney princesses are Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Kida, Giselle, and Rapunzel.

Kida's becoming a queen by the end of the Atlantis movie is often used as an argument against her eligibility for the franchised sorority. But in the case of Leia, she could technically be a princess for two reasons. That she was the adoptive daughter of King Organa (who was a Senator before the fall of the Old Republic) and that her birth mother was a former queen of Naboo. Kylo-Ren is by birthright a prince. While there's no more kings or queens (kaisers or kaiserins) in Germany, the Royal family still lives on. More official than Zsa Zsa's prinz, and having royal titles, but absolutely no governmental abilities bestowed through birthright.

The real problem here is Love Interest as Reward, whether that pertains to male or female protagonists. When this trope is invoked, the "Love Interest" is rarely treated as a person in themselves, more as an object or a symbol of a life well lived that deserves a reward. While it can work in a symbolic sense, it is ultimately dehumanising to the love interest, and also implying that if you fail to find your true love it is because you're simply not a good person. I know this is shit people will eventually learn isn't true anyway, but it doesn't help when you're told this throughout your childhood. People aren't rewards. Relationships aren't a given, and you being a good person has nothing to do with your success in romance. It's unhelpful to say the least.

I'm gonna argue that a lot of the princesses in the cartoons, (Lana, Sally etc) are in a nebulous political situation. In those cases the kingdom has been disrupted by the villain and there's no central government that speaks for and represents all citizens. The princess is usually the leader of the rebel force here. Therefore a declared coronation could be seen as a powergrab and just end up causing in-fighting amongst those that would be potential allies. By not overstepping their bounds until the situation can be stabilized they avoid flaring up smaller battles as well as how In Lana's case her father wasn't even dead but trapped in another dimension and in Sally's it wasn't clear what happened to her father. (I remember seeing him restored in the comics back when I was reading them but that was years ago.) Jasmine was also fleshed out more in the cartoon so that's probably why she didn't get much flak.

The point is they thought to justify the character by affixing the label and meaning of 'princess'. After they worked out it undercut the character as standing on her own merit, they tried to fix this after the fact by altering what 'princess' meant, and then just by changing her station to general - which within the force awakens wasn't justified as being more earned than her previous title.

You know this review made me realize something about Princess Bubblegum. Her dad isn't around (I think) yet she still uses the title Princess. I realized that she didn’t choose this because it was a cute title she chose it to gain popularity in order to stay in power. She new it was more marketable. I think it makes her charicture more interesting because when you think about it she is kind of a ruthless politician.

Tiana is probably my fav disney princess, right after Belle, since though the movie Tiana works hard to achieve her goals, and even at the end overcomes one of her faults because she was so driven thats all she knew to do. Incidentally, Frozen is one of the first real disney movies to make the princess into a queen. Sure you have princess Anna, but it made sense since their parents died, Elsa would be the new queen, and she didn't become the bad guy, instead a misunderstood character who shows her kind nature at the end.

But aren't the parents, i.e. the kings/queens, often still alive in Disney? Prince charming is a prince because his dad's still kicking, making Cinderella a princess. Same with Ariel. Same with Jasmine, Pocahontas, Aurora, Rapunzel and Merida. Mulan got her title because it was awarded to her because of her bravery, not because she became a royal I think. Anna is a princess because Else, the queen, is the elder sister. I don't know the parental status of Adam or Snow White's prince, nor that of Naveen, but for most of these girls, the ruling monarchs are still firmly in place. I understand his point, but I'm not sure I agree. And for the record, in Barbie Princess and the Pauper, the queen is also still very much alive, and yet the princess single-handedly changes their entire economical system and makes it profitable again, saving her country from bankruptcy through her geographical knowledge. So the princess trope can be done well, and they can be given positions of power and be shown to change things. Just because that isn't usually done, doesn't mean that there is something inherently wrong with the title of "princess". Also, the whole point of a fairytale is to be able to leave reality in a while. To go to a place where kindness and hard work are rewarded and a happy ending is guaranteed. And that is why it is a fairytale. We know it isn't real, but we're living reality every day.

I don't understand why so many Disney women are considered "princesses" Mulan is not a princess, Pocahontas isn't a princess, Lilo definitely isn't a princess, heck if we're being technical Belle was never an official princess because obviously whatever country the beast was prince of moved on and got a new government, because by hiding away in his castle everyone thought the prince was dead (So they either got themselves a new royal family or moved on to a more advanced form of government, like democracy).

Elsa is crowned queen in Frozen taking all the responsibility for her kingdom (well, at least after she leashed out and ran away from everything), so I guess, Disney is getting better in this too. The one thing I was always disturbed about the Disney Princess lineup that it's often the girl who is from the local royal bloodline and the boy is either not royal at all or from the royal family of a different country. So, logically, the girl should become queen of the country with the boy ruling beside her as prince. But it's never explained of course and fairytales often end with the feeling that the man coming from nowhere is going to be in charge with the princess beside him only as a pretty accessory. Actual real-life royal families often prove things can be the other way around (khm... Queen Elisabeth II... khm).

Aaaand two things spring to my mind: Being a princess as easy: Hire a good Necromancer and ask Lady Diana, Princess of Wales about that. Kindness as a negative trait or even stereotype: Well, there is that one Animee, where one girl's kindness and dedication to be usefull for something saved as litle as all of humanity. Which was quite some lesson for me.

We should tell people that beauty isn't everything and that people who look after us won't live forever so they have to learn to take responsibility so they can live on their own or raise a family. Though youth and beauty is great, not everything last forever in this universe but that doesn't mean your inner or outer beauty is lost and you can still be a good person even if your ugly and people have different opinions about what is beautiful and even if your old you can still look good and young but you are still old and there's nothing wrong with that. Life isn't just about looks and youth and when your born you will die someday anyways but you should live your days to the fullest anyways because you don't know how long you live and how many lives you have so you might as well live life to the fullest.

This was a very sound argument you made. Nice video. I myself grew up hating princesses but I don't know why. Like, I was a child who didn't know any better, but I avoided all Disney films and never touched any of the pink sections in the toy stores. I hated Disney princesses for a long time and I didn't know why. To me, girls that liked princesses were dumb and I didn't know why either. I hated Disney heroines too like Gabriella from HSM. I think it was because of how I felt annoyed of the stereotype and expectation of girls and women, and this is so strange because I was just a kid. Somehow, I have sensed that a long time ago and wanted to fight it. I delved into sports and martial arts, and acted as "manly" as I could be that people thought I was a lesbian. I think that sort of thinking lives on to me today. I refuse to shave, to trim my eyebrows, to look as clean and dainty as society wants me to think. But what's different is I actually like girly-looking designs now. I don't want the strong, tomboyish female character anymore. I want to play the pretty girly one who still kicks ass. I think that it is the title and the fantasy of girls that has gotten the princess hate, including mine. When I was a girl, I didn't want to have to wear a skirt and find a man to save me. I wanted to play with remote control cars and fight them in sports. I disliked how girls daydreamed and take the passive role that seems to stick to the "princess" title. The association of passiveness with princesses and the hate on the queens seems to shed some light of my subconscious thoughts in the past. So really, nice vid.

So, I watched this video for the first time and kind of chuckled when he started arguing a similar point to one I discovered recently, in fact almost the same point but in a slightly different context, in the anime Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta always refers to himself as the prince of the saiyans, despite his family being dead and his home planet destroyed. Me and my friends were talking and came to the realization, he's actually the king of the saiyans, even though the population of saiyans in the universe has, as far as he knows, dwindled to near extinction, so why does he still call himself prince? Well I then realized, a prince isn't expected to save his people, a prince isn't expected to be a just ruler, in other words, a prince doesn't have the responsibility or obligation to avenge his people like a king would. He's avoiding the responsibility to protect the "subjects" he still has, and to avenge those he has lost.

Vegeta stopped with the title. after Namek, it barely came up. The only time it came up in Buu was during the Majin Vegeta. After Vegeta's Final Atonement, which I still think the M should be been left of Ash Vegeta statue, It never is brought again except in GT, when Bulma refers to herself as Vegeta's Queen. It's supposed to be a way to also show character building. In the beginning, he's stuck up on the passed. In the end, He's stuck to the present. he's no longer the Saiyan who lives to fight, he's a father and Earthling from Planet Vegeta who wants to protect his home and family.

+Channel Awesome the title of queen was traditionally bestowed to the woman who was married to the king. it's not a title you reach by youself. being the only daughter of a king also did not grant you the title upon the king's death, instead the princess is married to the guy who'll actually rule and become King. Queens by themselves had no power and their function was limited to being a display case of the couple (basically they were an attribute of the husband). they couldn't reach any status of prestige or authority without being led by a man, and their only way of being promoted was to be wed. The one way a woman could actually be in power was to be the widow of a great leader (hence the usual bitterness of these characters), and then manage to escape being remaried. in which case she would fulfill the role of her former husband and act with his authority. This explains why there are so many princesses, single ladies traditionally couldn't reach the status of Queen no matter who led the state. not that I support it, it was just the case. To make the girl a Queen in any show is to put her out of reach of the protagonist (as she was already claimed at least once, and/or is morning her true love... the protagonist then becomes some kind of spare wheel more than his own man, which in term hampers characted developement and removes strength from him). Thus it's generally counter productive regarding the roles the women are supposed to play in the script (which sadly is often eye-candy and/or motivation for the guy to do something).

Honestly, I generally like princess characters, I'm just not a fan of the GUYS they habitually fall for. I see that as their primary issue... Like, Arial is adventurous, inquisitive, and loves to study foreign cultures! So cool! ...Falls in love with the first human she sees and gives everything up for him without having once had a conversation. Cinderella is hardworking, kindhearted, and gentle to animals many find repulsive. So sweet! ... Falls in love with a guy she danced with for about an hour, and doesn't even know his name. There are others who have similar situations: Strong, admirable characters who instantly fall in love with guys who, let's be honest, are more than "fixer uppers." I guess much of this plays into the concept of "Love at first sight" which I'm not a huge believer in... the situations more strike me as actually being "Kind and loving character who is generally isolated from others meets someone who is nice to them and physically attractive." It makes sense. I think we've all at some point been very lonely and kinda bonded ourselves to someone who showed us kindness in some degree or another. I'm just not a huge fan of these otherwise great characters so easily settling for "meh" guys they've just met.

Not sure about others, but I did figure that Leia still being referred to as 'Princess' was not her choice -- in fact, after the first film, we only ever hear Han refer to her as 'Princess', 'Your Highness', or 'Your Worship', and she clearly hates it -- and even then, it's more a class thing than because she's royalty. I figured it was because that was the title she'd held for so long that people kept addressing her out of habit (same way people keep remembering Diana as 'Princess of Wales' even though she wasn't, technically) I don't mind the girl characters being Princesses, so long as they're still interesting. At least that way, you can make an argument as to the 'why' specific to them, not just 'because girls are princesses'.

It's mostly how the princess are marketed and how the parents of those little girls present to them as a positive role model. Almost all the Disney princesses that are suppose to be independent, relatable, likeable, and have character are being marketed in the wrong way, for instsnce; Mulan, Merida, and Tiana. These girls are being marketed in the worse common denominator of the harmful stereotypes of the later Disney princesses. When you see a Mulan doll at a toy store you don't see her decked in her armor or training clothes, you don't see her with a sword or a bow and arrows. Instead you see her with pretty hand mirrors, a vanity, luxurious looking combs, and baretts with many assortment of dresses, and in hindsight that's not bad a thing but that's not what Mulan is all about, it's even apparent in the movie that that's not what she's all about and actually struggles with the trope of what her role as a woman and a daughter is suppose to be, not all that. Then there's Merida, when her doll came out there was outrage and justly so, why is Merida wearing make up, wearing pretty dresses, her freckles absent on her face, and why is her hair straight and dolled up just like the earlier princesses when again that's not what Merida is all about in the movie. Merida is a tomboy through and through, she's not only a princess but she's a daughter of a warrior, which shines through the entire movie, it is never secretly hidden. Her mother knows what she's all about and her father knows what she's all about--which he is absolutely delighted about. He proudly relishes his daughter likeness to him, which is why he doesn't correct her when his wife reprimands her for not potraying of how a princess should behave. Finally there's Tiana like the others you don't see dolls of her in her working attire or even have a play kit of the diner she worked at nor the restaurant she owns. As usually she has an assortment of dresses and accessories, and again just like the others that's not what Tiana is about. Unlike Cinderella who worked hard through subservience, Tiana worked hard cause she had a realistic ambitious goal, Tiana knew the value of a dollar and that every penny count towards the dream she wanted to achieve which I found that to be quite wholesome. Unlike Cinderella who was rewarded for her hard work (through subservience) and kindness in the end, Tiana's hard work, determination, and love for food was not rewarded initially and her dreams were dashed by shady underhanded business men. But in the end after marrying prince Naveen she chose to continue wanting to open her restaurant instead being whisked away to a far off land to play the roll of princess. I know this is too long so I'll wrap it up, by Disney marketing these princess like the old school princesses I feel that little girls are missing out on what makes these princesses uniquely them. It's not all about the pretty dresses and accessories, it's how they are portrayed in the movies which Disney isn't doing very well in marketing that.
