After a month of ownership, my brand new Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 was towed back to a dealership after breaking down on me, and it sat there for a week. What could the problem be, and what has Porsche done to fix it?

This is why people should not treat their new cars as a weekend car. Drive the car as much as you can while you have warranty cause if you save it you'll never know if it has issues and wasted your warranty

Exactly. Drive it like you mean it because if something's gonna break, it'll do so while under the warranty period.

Unfortunately, many people in southern California (including myself) drive weekend cars such as ( Porsche/BMW/Ferrari's ). If I was the owner of that Porsche, I would have towed the vehicle back Porsche were the car was purchased.

Another resource to consider that you have not mentioned is your local Porsche Club of America. Porsche members are passionate and very supportive of each other with experience and information. I have been a club member of 5 different marques and PCA is far and away the best.

way different price point but I had a similar problem with a 2019 VW Golf (non-GTI) 6MT, bought used from dealership w/ 5K miles. Almost immediately threw CEL, went limp - back to dealership, sat for 2 weeks, said they couldn't determine cause, replaced ECU. Happened again, sat for 10 days, replaced accelerator pedal, happened again. Went to different dealership, sat for another 10 days. at that point it was in shop more than CA lemon laws allow for, opened a case for VW to buy back car. The head service tech figured it out (i think), it was a wiring harness issue, they did a throttle/accel pedal partial harness replacement. I was out at that point, done with VW for good. Sold to Carvana for 5K profit and bought a 2022 BRZ, still going strong, zero issues! I hope the best for you! My experience scared me off German cars!

Glad to see that the GTS is back home. After owning 12 Porsches, there is a really good chance this was a once and done issue and it may never come back. If/when it does, take it back to your selling dealer and push the issue for a loaner vehicle and a permanent resolution. Best of luck with the new car, Shark Blue is an amazing color.

The bad thing about premium cars is that the only thing that is premium is the price. You get a better treatment when buying a KIA or a Hyundai. I think your video was excellent and dealers need to shape up.

First time ever I heard they do not pay for a car while fixing a unit under warranty. That was a shame. IF you have a relationship with your local dealership, I would talk to them and have the car checked. Good is back.

Fellow car enthusiast here. Cars are finicky (they're machines after all) and will break down sometimes. I agree that Porsche should have done better in terms of customer service and should have at least paid for a rental car for you. Bottom line, don't let this diminish the joy of owning such a fantastic car. Drive the wheels off of it and enjoy it cause life is short. Cheers!

I agree. I can understand that there may not be loaners available and that Porsche may prioritize the owners of more expensive models, regardless of how unfair that is, but at the very least, they should provide a rental car or a credit for one until a loaner becomes available. I used to get BMW loaner when my fairly old Z3 needed repairs. The loaner is also another way to market other cars to customers.

Excellent points, I am trying to enjoy the car but this unexpected breakdown has me nervous about taking it out on longer trips. Maybe if I drive it for a while on shorter trips or my commute, if it remains reliable then it can regain my trust and confidence, but right now that trust is somewhat shattered.

Sounds like you had a misfire, likely from poor quality fuel, but possibly from normal break in happenings. Call right now to schedule your first oil change and to arrange a loaner if you want one. Run through that fuel as quickly as you can then find a Shell station, fill up again, get those break in miles done immediately and then move out of California.

I can somewhat relate to your experience. I had a 2016 Cayman GTS that I bought as a CPO, and a low oil light came on out of the blue after 3 months as I was driving down the highway at like 1am. I pulled over, restarted to no avail, then called Roadside Assistance. Due to Covid, I was lucky to even catch a ride in the tow truck, and they offered to tow to the nearest dealer or home. I chose home since I felt I could just clear the low oil light if that was the issue. Next morning, I started the car and more lights came on: PDK, TPMS, check engine. Doh!! I decided to address the low oil light first by adding a wee bit of oil. Here is the important part for your future reference: I didnt know at the time that you can clear your oil level messages by leaving the rear trunk hatch open for 20 seconds. Basically there was an oil level sensor glitch and the car was NOT deprived of oil. Once the code was reset, all the error lights turned off and the car never had an issue again for the next 3 years. Luckily I only added a bit and didn’t overfill the darn thing. Had I just opened the trunk hatch for 20 sec in the highway shoulder, I wouldn’t have had to go the whole ordeal. As for the dealership/ service experience, I am in Toronto and I also feel like a no one when I have concerns or issues. I never got a loaner either; they offered it one time but told me that if I took a loaner, they would keep the car for a day, but if I waited at the dealership, they can get the service done in 3 hours so I chose to wait. LOL. I think it’s the way it is with luxury items. There are always VIPs ahead of you. It is something that turns me off from owning future Porsches (or, maybe next time I just get a used one out of warranty and go straight to indies for service).
@86drive86
@86drive86 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. What a weird glitch. Does the engine have to be running when you open the rear hatch to clear the oil level message? I had heard that the oil measurement system is very finicky about the conditions in which it works (hatch has to be closed), and maybe opening the hatch just reset the whole system and made it check again. I do think the dealership experience has turned me off from going to the dealers for service if I can avoid it. I believe there's nothing wrong with going to an indie for all your service needs as long as you keep good records, unless the issue is about having a good relationship with a dealer/service center in case you do need to have warranty work done.

Your situation is similar to my first Porsche. Bought a 911 back in 2009 and soon after it had a transmission fail code. Brought it to a dealer, not the purchasing dealer, it took over 2-3 weeks to resolve and the douche bag dealership owner wouldn’t give me a loaner because it was bought else where. Porsche rule is you get a loaner every service and dealer gets reimbursed After the repair this 911 has been the most reliable car I have owned and after 133K miles it is still great. Currently also own a 2018 Macon Turbo PP and 2022 GT3 and all have been exceptional All my Porsches are serviced at the same purchasing dealer since then and all is good. Especially I have the same tech for the last decade! Hang in there. Once you pass the break in period revving to 8K RPM will bring a smile to your face😁

Don't be afraid of driving this car in the manner it was intended for. You don't buy a Cayman GTS to be a shopping car. Even though your experience wasn't the best with the dealership, you still have the warranty and should drive with that piece of mind.

Hey, your updates really struck a cord with me. I am of similar background and have always wanted a Porsche especially the GTS 4.0. It boggles the mind that Porsche would literally deprive you of your car for a week and do “nothing” although return it back to you. The fact that they are suppose to be “experts” but can’t figure it out is probably the most frustrating part. Hope it works out in the long run and you don’t have a soul taste in your mouth

yeah, if they had found a problem and actually fixed it, I would feel a lot better about the experience. Mistakes happen, and if its fixed I'm willing to cut them some slack. But having an unknown issue still lurking there is pretty worrisome, I no longer have the confidence to take a long road trip somewhere without the fear or expectation that something might go wrong...

Don't forget that there are lemon laws... especially in California. In any event... I was considering a Porsche around 2027-8 timeframe... Given this experience you're having I'm probably going to go to another brand or just keep my MR2 for another decade. The reason I was considering Porsche because of the dealer network and support I thought I was going to get and how they hold value... Now... I'm thinking Porsche might be in decline... Unfortunate. Emira is looking a lot more appealing.

About loaner cars, I think it is at least partly due to the fact that a 718 is among the least expensive models at Porsche and any loaner would be first prioritized for other 911 turbo, GT3 or even Cayanne owners. Even credits for a rental car, that’s again is whether the dealer values the lower model owner’s business, especially a out of town owner whom they know is not going to be a recurring business for them. Anyhow, bad service from dealership is just frustrating especially from one of the premium brands. Lexus surely wouldn’t treat their customers like that.
@Peanutdenver
@Peanutdenver 4 ай бұрын
Cayanne start around 73K and run to about 114K(outside of the Turbo). The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 starts at 100k and usually run around a 125K, so this wouldn't make sense(cost consideration)outside of the GT/Turbo cars. You do always get preferential treatment when purchasing a GT/Turbo cars especially if you have a relationship with the dealer. It's usually the dealership like you mentioned and why it's important to find a good one. Unfortunately there are bad dealerships with every brand.

There’s no discrimination here, it’s called scheduled maintenance. Folks schedule their services ahead of time for when loaners are available. He could’ve simply called around to several dealerships, while waiting on the tow truck, and tried to find another one with a loaner available. They can’t hold cars back in case an extremely rare incident occurs.

Beautiful 718. Hopefully you can put it behind you and enjoy an amazing vehicle. The majority of times and take my car in for service , a loaner car wasn’t available. Fortunately I live near the dealership, but it kinda sucks that there was no loaner and usually I pay for an Uber back. I had my 911 towed to another dealership once for a blown tire in the canyons and dropped it off just before closing and had to Uber back one hour away to pick it up a few days later.

Sucks to hear this. I’m not a Porsche owner but have been investigating purchasing a used one. That’s horrible customer service and what does that say if they have that many loaners and all are unavailable. For a brand new Porsche to breakdown and not have a loaner is unacceptable. I’ve seen other lower tier dealerships offer loaners for cars that need to be serviced for an extended period of time.

Ooof, phantom wiring harness issues with a Porsche... Heard that story before, usually results in a Lemon law claim. Lets all cross our fingers for it being a one time only fluke! With our Macan, if I need to take it to the dealer for work, the loaners at Rocklin Porsche are booked way out in advance and usually all gone. So if there is an emergency drop off, its not going to be easy to get one here either. I've been servicing the Macan myself though, easiest oil change I've ever had to do LOL

I would feel exactly the same way you do.....Not to get any explanation for a failure that resulted into towing the car in the first place...does not inspire confidence. Secondary, if it just takes a computer reset, you almost seem to wonder why they needed to keep the car for so long. It seems not logical to advise first on a possible throttle body issue just to run diagnostics later for a simple reset that fixes all......I hope that this was just a 1 time issue and that you can finally start enjoying such a beautiful car rather owning one with second thoughts of worry.....

As far as i know for some other brands, the manufacturer only require the dealer to have 1 way to provide inmediate transportation from a to the dealer for car pickup; either with shuttle transportation/Uber or a loaner. So its not uncommon for a dealer to proceed the way they did like this case. And to be honest, 40 loaner cars seems way more than what would i have expected from any dealer for any brand. If the demand is higher, then i don’t see how this is the dealer’s problem to be honest.
@86drive86
@86drive86 4 ай бұрын
I'm not expecting a loaner if they have none to give, but in my circumstance, it being a brand new car with 300 miles on it, I expected at least a rental car. No brand new car should break down on the highway so soon, and the manufacturer and dealerships should step in and take care of any customer who has such an unexpected convenience. I don't care if they're out of loaners in that situation, they should make it right. If that means offering to pay for a rental car then they should do it. Like I said other more "normal" brands might not do so (and yet I've seen Lexus, Toyota, and Mazda do so), but I fully expected a premium brand like Porsche to go above and beyond what is normal. It is a significant customer experience issue and I was disappointed by how they handled it. Imagine if you paid some significant dealer markup on top of MSRP for one of these new cars, and it broke down on you!

Imagine being tech lead for a company like Porsche and basically your entire DB system is down and you don't have any kind os clustering or backup system to keep the process and bussiness going. You expect premium service from a make and enterprise like Porsche, but when Renault can give you more on this than Porsche you can especulate how this company is heading to.. A pitty, i can't imagine spending 100k+ € on a car (a House basically where i live..) and have this kind of treatment without any solutions. Al least i expected Porsche to offer a 'Cortesy Car' with the same specs to the owner, just to minimize the 'trouble' caused.. Also, they plug a computer, clear the errors.. which means, that can happen again. Wish you the best and that was maybe one of one cases.

It's possible, but the Porsche dealership/tech didn't say anything about that. They pulled the diagnostic codes for the engine fault and it indicated a problem with the throttle body system, not anything to do with the fuel or fuel system. I assume they have some kind of diagnostic procedure or checklist, and they must have ruled that out.

In December 2021 I bought a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, same color as yours (the "Smurf-mobile", "Puffa" in Italian, as my daughter called it), manual transmission. Everything went smoothly throughout the breaking-in period. Great car! Then, at around 2,500 miles, things started to be interesting: "Engine control fault. Consult a workshop. Driving permitted" (thankfully not "verboten"). The engine seemed to be running fine, but every time I turned the car on, some minor issue would appear at random, seldom the same. Every time I started the car, I could not tell what would work and what would fail: No rev-matching in Sport mode when downshifting, or no air conditioning, or no ventilation of the seats, or no start-stop function, or no memory... Turn it, off, lock it, restart it and that issue would be resolved, only for another one, perhaps, to resurface. Anyway: I ended up bringing the car to the dealer 5 times (each time from a few days to three weeks; they gave me a loner Macan or Cayenne, though). First time they reset the computer and sent me home. Second time, they checked the spark plugs. Then they changed the coils (of course, I had to wait for them to be shipped from Germany), then they replaced the injectors, then they checked to compression. This "fixed" (better: "hid") the problem for a day or two, then that pesky error message would reappear. In all of that, I had always suspected a faulty ECU (or MDE, whatever...): One FET (field effect transistor), or a few, in the BIOS (or in the cache or in the register or the processor) is/are faulty. The error correction of the processor does its best to guess the correct instruction, but there are limits to what it can do. So, every time the ECU boots, you never know which instruction is going to be missed, if any. This is what someone at Porsche NA told them, finally, after several months and some 8,000 miles. So, they swapped the ECU. Good. Everything back to normal.... for another few thousand miles. Then, at about 12,000 miles: "Engine control fault. Consult a workshop. Driving permitted". Two more visits to the dealer. Again: No clue about the cause of the problem. "Perhaps we should replace the injectors"... "No, thanks. Been there, done that"... At this point, I lost my patience. I suspect some major fault in the wiring harness that "fries" the ECU once in a while. That car should go back to Zuffenhausen and have the entire wiring harness replaced. So: I gave the car back to the dealer. I must say that they treated me very well; they were clearly apologetic and as perplexed as I was. I was quickly allocated the first 992 Carrera S cabrio (stick, of course, no PDK for me) that they were expecting and it was delivered a few months later. I'm very happy with it. A different car, but equally wonderful to drive (a bit less forgiving, perhaps, more powerful and comfortable but less engaging). Obviously, no more 718 GTS 4.0 for me (Cayman or Boxster), despite being a real driver's car, engaging and fun. There must be something's electrically fishy in the GTS 4.0.... I saw that that my ex--car was sold a few days after I gave it back, but I saw it again on sale just a few months later after the new owner had driven it for no more than 1,000 miles... I suspect that yet another few "Engine control..." error messages pushed that owner's patience to the limit much faster than it did for me. Now It has been sold again. Good luck to the third owner! They really needs it! And good luck to you.I hope that you will not have to go through the same path I had to follow before getting rid of that car.

Just an interesting thought. This poor support from Porsche is likely worth it when it comes to owning a special car like a Cayman as an enthusiast. I cannot imagine how deeply disappointing it would be if you were just a regular person in a Macan or Cayenne. You buy a luxury car and get a Hyundai dealer experience... At least Lexus treats you wonderfully. I know many people who would not buy a car from a company that doesn't have a good dealer experience. Even Chrysler has been nothing but good to me.

Have you tried to deal with the dealership you bought the car from?
@86drive86
@86drive86 4 ай бұрын
Yes, but the situation didn't really allow for them to help out much. When the car broke down I was far from home and even further away from the dealership I bought the car from. When I called Porsche Roadside Assistance, they were only willing to cover towing my car to the nearest dealership, which was Walnut Creek. They said towing it any further than the nearest dealership would incur an additional out-of-pocket charge to me, something along the lines of $330 additional charges. So I agreed to have them tow to the nearest one. Then after I left the car at Walnut Creek, I reached out to my salesman at the dealership I bought from. At first he said they didn't have any loaners either, but then a few days later he reached out to me again and said that if I could have my car towed (at my own expense or using my AAA membership) to his dealership for the service work, then he could arrange to get me a loaner. But at that point my car had already been with Walnut Creek for several days and they had begun the process of diagnosing the car and taking things apart. It didn't make much sense to transfer my car over to the other dealership, effectively restarting the clock as it would take time for a new tech to diagnose and troubleshoot the car. At that point I just opted to let Walnut Creek finish the work, and a few days later they were done. If the problem comes back, I will certainly try to get the car back to the selling dealership, but it comes down to where I am and proximity to the dealership.

Electrics will be electrics. Would not be be surprised if it was something simple as a loose or not fully seated connector (wouldn’t have been the first time it’s ever happened) especially when troubleshooting revealed the throttle body was fine. Most Service Depts will not fall on their sword to admit as much. Having worked in the aviation industry for 40yrs it was not uncommon to see issues occur simply due to loose or disconnection of electrical connectors. Question: why didn’t you have the car towed to your “purchase” dealer??

I was far away from home on a trip to Napa (> 50 miles) and even further away from the dealer I bought from. When I called Porsche Roadside Assistance, they said they would only tow it to the nearest Porsche dealer free of charge. That ended up being Walnut Creek. If I wanted to tow it to any other dealer (the one I purchased from, or one closer to my home). they said it was an additional charge to me. They quoted me something like $333 to tow it to the further dealership. Now maybe I should have said to go ahead and do that, and seek reimbursement from Porsche later. Or use my own AAA membership tow to get it there. But I didn't think it was fair to have to pay out of pocket or use my own tow service (it's not an unlimited tow credit) when Porsche should be footing the bill for this unexpected breakdown.

You should have shipped the car back to the suppling dealer?

@@86drive86 yes I understand that but that’s when you tell the suppling dealer to get it collected and sort it out, they made the profit from the sale so they need to fix the issue! Best wishes David

Dude, you've been very poorly treated. I have a 4 year old Mercedes and we get free breakdown cover, as long as the car remains serviced at the main dealer. This cover gives us a free loan car should you suffer a breakdown. I experienced such a fault a few months ago when my car had a cylinder head failure, but was still drivable. I dropped it at a dealer of my preference and a loan car was delivered to my house shortly thereafter. Mercedes have this built into their operating programme in the UK and will always accept a breakdown vehicle and immediately start work on the car. I had my car back within a week. I was very impressed with Mercedes' customer service to be honest. Porsche should be even better.

They are not too busy to sell new cars....I feel such dealer talk is a sorry excuse for lousy service of a premium and very expensive car.....It is very inappropriate and a shame.

One would imagine such conduct from a USED CAR DEALER - not from a premium brand provider.....Shameful . Luckily, I have not had any issues with my 2015 Cayman GTS (981). @@Thegowfer65

Hopefully you do not have more issues.....Try to get a good private Porsche mechanic. This is what I did for my service work. I am not rich enough to get recognized by Porsche Dealers.@@Thegowfer65

Reset the computer, why didn't they do that first when you first brought it in. Everybody knows that by usually resetting a computer solves most of the problems.

I think if you're trying to diagnose the problem at home on your own, that's how you do it to save money. At the dealership, I would hope that they do the proper diagnostics to try and find the reason for the fault first. In this case, they read the code for the engine fault, it indicated failure or problem with a certain component (throttle body), and they checked it to make sure it was OK. Maybe they knew this kind of thing can be random error and a reset is the ultimate answer, but as a customer with a new car I would have been even more upset if they just told me that these engine fault codes will pop up randomly and I could just reset and ignore it.
