So, we learned that incest doesn't create superior offspring after the monarchs and royals of history... And yet, some humans of the modern day refuse to apply that same logic to interbreeding dogs?

Some humans refuse to apply that knowledge to their own species. Mind you, this is the same species that gained access to CRISPR and CAS9 about a decade ago after successfully mapping their own genome the decade prior. I'd pray for our species if i'd thought anyone would've answered it.

@@eugeniolejarza9702 they have to share close blood. Siblings, cousins, a brother or mother, sister or father. When you breed incest, recessive genes appear that cause horrible mutations (any defects that are affected by the same blood will definitely be passed down to the new pups). Breeding the same dog breed but no where near related should be fine, but mongrels are the healthiest dogs. Pedigrees are badly bred anyway. So it probably doesn't matter even if you do breed outside of blood. Adopt don't shop kids. 🙆 The only way we can get rid of these kind of breeders is by not giving them money.

Yeah, dog shows suck. I was introduced to them by my late dog's breeders, who were kind of elitists and very much the "dog show"-type people. I hated it, my dog hated it and we only went a few times. The surroundings there are really stressful and breeders can be really mean to each other. I didn't witness anything other than gossiping, but that was enough for me. Thankfully, my next dog will be a resque, so I won't be able to attend even if I wanted to. We might attend a match show just for fun, but those tend to be much more relaxed anyway. They're all for fun or charity. I'm hoping to find a hobby my future dog will like, and maybe we'll be good enough to compete as well.

Buying a dog or an animal because it's popular or "cute" annoys the fuck outta me; someone I worked with is willing to TO DROP 10,000 (That's 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS) USD ON A FUCKING PUG. It's a "Popular blue fawn color" So I can seel the babies for more. Not to mention the untrained poorly controlled and health riddled animals you have because "They're popular" once youre are done with them they're gonna sit somewhere an rot because it's no "New" or "Popular" which causes more suffering!

The most wholesome one I’ve seen was a girl on Britain’s Got Talent who did a dance routine WITH her dog, to the James Bond theme song. The best part is how much fun they both seemed to be having, and how generally happy the dog seemed to be, licking his owners face in the interview, wagging his tail during the routine, big doggy smile on his face when it was over like he KNOWS the cheering means he did a good job because he’s a good boy. It’s on KZbin still, and honestly 10/10 would recommend

I hardly even get the "Aw cute" reaction when I see pugs anymore, and especially not English bulldogs. They are horrifically malformed, and objectively unhealthy from birth. And seeing people try to defend it is like talking to someone who believes the earth is flat. "He's not in pain, see he's happy!" Why yes, and people born with severe genetic defects are capable of being happy, too. The difference is their parents didn't choose to breed them into existence with those defects for the sake of vanity and money.

But sometimes the breedstandards are healthy too (mostly for functioning working dogs though) and are needed to ensure that herding or hunting dogs don't loose their instincts and aren't bred in a way that their apperance starts to interfere with their working abilities. @@MildorZalost0 If you can hear it breathing at any time other than when it is hot or during and after heavy exercise, then no, it is not healthy. Pug's are not cute. There was a time when I was a naive child that I thought so, but now that I know how unhealthy they are and how much pain they are in 24/7 I cannot think them cute at all and it honestly baffles me how others can find this mess of suffering dog "cute". That pugs are unhealthy and suffering is not exaggerated nor is it an assumption. It is a cold hard cruel fact. Or did you not bother to pay any attention to this video? Though he did not go into detail about the breathing issues, there are physical reasons for them. When was the last time you tried doing your normal daily activities while breathing through a pillow? Because that is an apt comparison for what being a pug is like. Retro pugs are fine. They have enough of a snout to alleviate their breathing issues and longer legs with sounder bone structure. Pugs should never have existed as they are today.

For a millennia old dog such as the pug, it's fitting that as society gets more decadent, so do they have to ruin dog breeding too. As you can tell from my picture, I love pugs a lot, they are emotionally intelligent dogs and very good natured. It's the breed standards people choosing dysgenic traits as well as puppy mills pumping out puppies with very poor health that is ruining this breed. They wouldn't have survived this long if they were always this way. I say yes, do breed more retro pugs and select for long snouts, long legs and healthy traits.

Germany is producing "Retro-mops"/Retro-pugs. Basically pug breeders out-crossed pugs to the Parson Russel Terrier then back bred the offspring into pugs and only selected the offspring from the back breeding with the longest snouts to continue breeding. A stubby snout, smaller eyes, finer body and less wrinkles is the result. The stubby snout is enough to take care of the breathing issues of the pug breed and due to the outcrossing, they have better genetic diversity than the pure and very much unhealthy pug.

I mean I'm kinda a leopard gecko nerd and the problem isnt breeding relatives to relatives. There's a random chance of getting a recessive genetic defect when you breed something now when you breed a completly unrelated animal to this animal nothing will happen because the other animal doesn't have the recessive trait but when you breed relatives to each other the more inbreeding the more likely these traits will pop up because the other animal have this trait. It's fine in leopard geckos most of the time because thier Gene's are well documented and so are thier lineages now in dogs they have been so much this way they are basically fucked... so maybe the problem is inbreeding! It has good information and sensibilities that don't come at the cost of having to listen to a rabid PETA extremist ramming their guilt-trip opinion down your throat. The rampant and unhealthy breeding of animals is an issue that needs to be seriously addressed and cracked down on, as it's way too exploitable, currently. The kennel club (at least the UK one, which was featured in that documentary about crufts) no longer supports culling healthy pups - their guidelines now suggest that a breeder should offer them to 'pet homes' (ie: non-show dog owners) and ensure that their contract of sale includes a spay/neuter clause. From their code of ethics: "Breeders:...Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes." The documentary shown is a few years old now, most of the 'oldschool' breeders like the old bag who thought nothing of killing pups without a ridge are thankfully out of the game by now.

When I was a teenager my mom surprised my sister and I with a German Shepherd puppy and oh boy was she a cute, smart, and a hyper dog! I loved that she was so easy to train and looked forward to her growing up into a big, smart, and loyal dog and she did grow to be a loyal family member. But when she was 6 months old she would scream out in pain for what seemed like no apparent reason she would cry and drag her back legs, at times she would roll around in pain. We thought she was sick and took her to the vet ASAP! They looked her over, tested her, x-ray, however they told us she was suffering from hip dysplasia. A common problem with GSDs. They told us the only thing we could do for her was give her small amounts of baby ibuprofen to ease the pain especially in winter when she could hardly walk. It was hard to watch her suffer, unfortunately, she passed away from a rattlesnake bite a few months after her first birthday... Though she was a great dog and because of her I love the breed, it's a shame that many like her are victims of careless breeders. They only breed these dogs for the sake of money and don't give shit about the dogs well being and health. I know that there are great breeders who are caring and responsible to not breed these "common" health problems/ issues but it seems to be few and far.

In order to correct some of the problems caused by inbreeding, the breeders would have to crossbreed the dogs to produce healthier puppies. But then they couldn't advertize that they were selling German Shepherds, even if the crossbreeding happened 3 generations back. And then stupid people would think, "Oh, but I want to get a REAL German Shepherd!" So the people mating puppies to their siblings and parents and grandparents continue to make money. Getting a GSD without hip dysplasia is very easy. You just need to find a reputable breeder that testes the parents for hip issues, rather than going for the cheapest dog on craigslist. In the future you can ask if the parents have OFA testing done. The breeder can easily provide a link to the results. It won't save your dog from a rattlesnake bite. But buying a quality puppy will save you the heartache of watching a dog suffer from preventable genetic disorders.

I know cat people aren't as big on breeds, and the breeds there are tend to usually (barring some exceptions) better off than some specialty dogs, but I still feel bad for a lot of cats. Persians and exotics come to mind for some of the same reasons pugs do; their flat faces cross a line into uncanny valley and I become concerned about their eyes and how clean they stay. Munchkins are adorable, but there's still the issue of their backs and poor breeding with them. Scottish folds may the ones I feel worse for; the cute little droopy ears usually come with chronic joint pain. All the cat's I've had growing up have been ex-feral "dumpster cats" or from shelters; they're sweet, beautiful animals! Still, I understand wanting specific looks and personality types. However, exploiting the kitties and their health is never ok.

Poor things look at their legs, they cannot have a full cat life with those.

What Ive noticed in the past few years is how everyone seemed to be wanting a grey cat. The grey furred kittens are always the first to go away followed by the other female kittens. I'm usually left with the male black kittens and even though I love them a lot it just hurts me to hear people say no to them just because they look like that. Heck, I even love my squint eyed old black lady who has the worst temper and randomly slaps other cats for no reason. She has scratched me a lot but I would really miss her when she's gone

There's a similar thing happening with Arabian horses, where breeders try so hard to get the 'pretty' dished face, that they neglect to realise that the poor horse can't breathe properly. Horses breathe predominantly through their nose, and the dished face does a similar thing to the squashed nose on a pug. They just can't get the same volume of air in that other horse breeds can. It's horrendous, and pisses me off to no end. To actually be on the topic of dogs, I've never really been a fan of pugs. I prefer large dogs with proper snouts, such as German shepherds and border collies. I also love greyhounds, but the racing of them just makes me sad. I have a rescue pure bred Staffordshire terrier (pit bull) whose parents are award winning show dogs. All the puppies came out blue except one, he was tan and the owners were going to put him down because he wasn't the "right" color and they didn't think he would sell. I begged them to let me have him instead so they gave him to me. Later they found out that several people had made offers of $500 to $1000 to buy him off me (he wasn't for sale, I turned them down) so the original owners sent me a bill for $400, half the price they charge for "correct" colored puppies. I tore it up and sent it back to them, they can fuck right off. They were going to kill that dog and gave him to me for free when they thought he was worthless. Anyway, he has a shortened snout, not anywhere as dramatic as a pug but even he has trouble breathing. His head is so massive & heavy that he gets tired of holding it up and will rest his chin on stuff whenever possible to take some of the strain off his neck.

I moved to a house with a bigger yard just to give him more room to run but due to his breathing issues he can only run for so long before he starts coughing up phlegm and wheezing. He was specifically bred to have that head shape and size because it looks intimidating as all get out but he's had to suffer for it. Pits are status symbol dogs where I live so lots of people breed them to sell and they think the scarier looking they are the better. Not only are they bred to have ridiculously big heads with shorter snouts and extremely muscular chests & legs but many owners also dock their tails and have their ears cropped. It's crazy all the genetic manipulation and unnecessary surgeries they will put these dogs thru just so they look a certain way, they've basically become a living fashion accessory. I’m a former pug owner and I do agree with all the valid points this video made. My little pug Koji, (RIP) died two months ago at the young age of 2 yrs old. During those two years it was countless visits to the vet, resulting in lots of medication and the hefty amount that came with it. At just 2 months he already had an eye infection. Throughout the 2 years he had a total of 3 eye infections, an unexplainable bacterial infection between his folds, but worst of all he sneezed blood. After he turned 1, he was due for his annual vaccines and suddenly when we got home, he suffered an allergic reaction. It’s already hard enough for pugs to breath but having something blocking his airway was pure torture. They treated him and said nothing was wrong, but after two days he started sneezing blood. His sneezing was very frequent at night and no vets were open during that time so, I had no choice but to take him to the emergency pet hospital, in which they charged more. After countless vet surgeries Koji stopped sneezing. A few months later, like any regular night I kissed him goodnight and put his beds in my sister’s room. He liked sleeping there anyways, but just in case I always left a spare bed in the living and my room, so he can choose whichever he can be comfortable in. Unfortunately, I woke up to my sister screaming that he wasn’t moving we rushed to the same ER and sadly, he did not make it. It was so sudden that they declared it was a heart attack. I knew within my heart that he wasn’t a healthy pug, no pug is healthy. Even if he didn’t have all these health problems you still have to be careful with them. You need to clean their face folds daily, watch their diet since they’re prone to obesity, they can’t breathe properly even when they sleep or during a regular walk. I love pugs in general, but if you plan on getting one be ready for a plethora of vet bills and concerns that you don’t usually have if you have a regular ‘healthy’ dog. Brachycephalic dogs in general are not healthy, just a warning.

@skyeiron5872 5 жыл бұрын
@@DAXminer-g1g Hypothyroidism and obesity is common in neutered dogs because they don't have their hormones to keep it in check anymore. You just have to keep a very close eye on their weight and they may need to be medicated in more severe cases to prevent obesity. Only thing I can recommend other than a vet visit is to watch his food intake and give him plenty of exercise. If you have a bike and live in an appropriate place I would suggest that you train him to run beside it and build up to running him for 3+ km per day. Just make sure he runs on grass and be careful of sign posts and cones lest you go one way and he goes the other and run him with the leash attached to a harness, not his collar in case of sudden stops or yanking. If he enjoys pulling while biking you may consider bike-joring though I'm not sure if that would work with a dog his size. Roller blading is another option if you have smooth pavement and are confidant enough to control him and your own speed.

Then there's corporations like PETA, who put down 90-95% of the animals they've "rescued" who claim to be animal rights activists, when in reality they intentionally hurt healthy animals that could've lived long, happy lives. Dachshunds actually have a purpose for their shape, though its highly exaggerated in the pure bred society. They are torpedo shaped to help chase after badgers underground. Their small yet powerful legs and slender, long body help them through the tight tunnels. Their name is German for "badger dog" because of this reason. They are of course more commonly used as lap dogs nowadays. I have a dachshund myself and I've had him since i was extremely young. When i see people with extremely long backed dachshunds making them do tricks where the dog stands on their hind legs, i scream internally. With such long backs, doing stuff like this will harm their backs. They also shouldnt jump from high places like beds and couches for the same reason. Dachshunds are relatively healthy dogs when not bred to be 8 kilometers long. Also, what the new standard for German Shepherds are now is awful. They want their hind legs to practically be in a forever squatting position. This is supposed to "help them when springing forward in an attack" when it does as much good as having the longest back for a dachshund. The kennel clubs are so idiotic to me. You take dogs that have a practical purpose and drive them to shit. It makes me really sad to see stuff like that

A flat face is NOT "cute" or "adorable". The look of these suffering animals is devastating. This is OUR fault. Unethical breeding is horrible. A feline example of the pedigree issue is the Ragdoll breed. A very fascinating trait was discovered in one cat and was bred into infinity. Buying a ragdoll almost always bring the inescapable worry that your lovely, loyal friend will die of either a heart issue slowly, with nothing you can do but watch, (Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, I'm pretty sure.) or another likely tragedy is paralysis due to another disease. Think about where they're from before you buy, and whether that breed is know for these practices.

Bulldogs are much worse off and should be a staple of the problems with pudge faced dogs. Many Pugs do not have difficulty breathing. There are bad examples that do. Hell, there are bad examples of any pure bred dogs. Yet it's always Pugs. We have a retro mop currently. Once had a Pug. While I do agree a retro mop is the best way to go, our Pug never had issues breathing. Her face wasn't a pancake though. Not all Pugs have a super flat face.

Also, dogs aren't wolves, they're a distinct subspecies and some taxonomists think they should be considered a completely different species (and really, that would depend on how one defines species). Dogs are not wolves, they have distinct behaviours that they do not share with wolves. An example of this is that dog trainers/behaviouralist have all but abandoned applying what we know about wolf social structure to dogs. An example of this is that dogs, both tame and feral, do not form the highly structured social hierarchies that their wild counterparts do.

Did an Animal anatomy module as part of my Animal course last year and the veterinarian who taught the class stressed these exact issues, he described the airways of a pug using the comparison of a person having to breathe through a drinking straw their entire lives, said that the people who breed them are generally pretty selfish too, although thankfully there are pug crosses out there such as Jugs and Puggles that are gaining in popularity somewhat. Nice to see the issue brought into public light, great vid! P.S. That woman who admitted to having puppies put down because they lacked ridges is a disgusting human being and I hope she and the vet she used were prosecuted for it at some point, sadly I've seen breeders get away with such practices before.

@@srfrancium9728 They can and many need to, but it doesn't fix the problem entirely, surgery can make normal breathing bearable for them but breathing when exercising and sleeping can still be problematic even after surgery, especially in older dogs. Sadly it can be "too little, too late" for some as they have difficulties during and when recovering from anesthesia. And thanks to heart problems and/or obesity issues that usually develop because of their bad airways, pugs can die on the operating table or just after the airway surgery.

I owned a pekingese - a breed similar to a pug, featured near the end of the video: the 'best in show' winner - she was the sweetest little thing, and we all loved her dearly, but she suffered various health issues throughout her life that were often debilitating, despite numerous vet-prescribed medications. Respiratory issues, numerous eye problems, a skin condition. It broke our hearts when she passed, but much like losing a very sick family member, there was a small comfort in knowing that she wasn't suffering anymore. The dogs were breed in China as status symbols for the very wealthy ... humans are a sick species.

I have a pug. However after having one you begin to see how severe their 'little' problems can be and its fucking heart breaking. Our pug constantly snores all day, which for a while I thought was innocent enough and quite cute. Until I started seeing how much worse it had gotten since he was a little pup. Nowadays? He can't lay on his side or on his back because it stops him being able to breathe. And at night? He'll barely manage to fall asleep because he snores so loud, but then once he does manage to fall asleep he'll jolt awake because he cannot draw a breath through his tiny nostrils. It is so fucking sad that a animal can't do something so simple as breathing, just so they can look and sound cute. It's disgusting. It just makes me sick knowing people make a living from selling these poor animals while acknowledging all of the issues they have. Now when I finally found one in my area at the local humane society, I was happy- even if they were not a “pure breed” and instead a mutt that maintained all the major features of a shiba Inu (coat, ears, face, tail, etc). Even to this day in his old age, I love my Shiba more then anything else and some time after his passing, I would adopt another shiba Inu again (despite the fact that no other shiba that I could adopt in the future holding a candle to the quirky shiba formally known as “Chester”). The point of my overly sappy Shiba-loving post is, I would not care if my shiba Inu can trace its lineage to the founding of Japan or if it is your run of the mill son of a bitch, as long as that shiba Inu is healthy, happy, and lives up to the shiba Inu namesake- I’m happy.

also, people who crop the ears and tails are mutilating the dog. schnauzers, Scottish terriers and other breeds are cropped often, the only reason is for the look. so when you hear someone say that a piercing or a tattoo is mutilation, think about how many dogs have their tail tied with a string so tight it cuts of the circulation, or how dogs get put to sleep to wake up with half their ear cut of.

She went to pick him up, and when she got home she noticed that his tail had been chopped off. She still loved him(still does) and he lived a long and happy life, all the way up to 15 years old. Wow. She rescued 4 dogs and brought that one bred dog. And one of the dog’s she rescued saved her late husband’s life. I am sad to report, that she will not be getting any dogs ever again as she now lives in a flat and is 74.

People have started to take notice and created the "retro pug" it's a mix between pugs and jack russell terriers to breed out the flat face. We still have a long way to go but it's a small step in the right direction. Dogs have been so loyal to us humans for so long it breaks my heart to see what humans have done to them.

I agree with this video in many ways, but I do want to share something with you. I have a pug myself, and I named him Smush (for obvious reasons), and he actually looks just the way Pugs had actually looked like awhile back. He has long legs, a snout, he breathes normally, and is generally thin compared to most pugs. We clean the ridges between his fur so they don't get infected. He is very old as well, I got him when I was in Kindergarten, and he's still been healthy as ever when i'm in 8th Grade. Just wanted to share.

I'm proud to own a mutt! My girl Rose was a rescue. We recently got her blood tested. She's mostly lab, German shepherd, and collie, but she's also got some white Swiss shepherd and a really small bit of American staffordshire terrier (Pitt bull) in there. She's a really interesting looking dog. She's all charcoal/black, but she has a white spot on her chest almost shaped like a lightning bolt and white toes. Also, in the summer, the fur around her eyes grows almost blonde/gold. Her snout is quite long, and she has really skinny ankles and a deep chest with a small waist. Her ears are like pointy lab ears, or floppy shepherd ears. Sometimes she'll put one or both of them up, and she looks adorable. She has a really long, fluffy tail that curls a little, but often remains straight. Her coat is actually really interesting. She has a huge ruff on her neck, we guess that's from the collie. It almost looks like a wolf's ruff. Her fur is REALLY soft, by the way. Especially her ears, head, and neck. The fur on her back is a bit more wiry and flat, and there's almost a straight line down her side where the fur becomes shaggy and fluffy. Like, she has two entirely different types of fur right next to each other. She's got a crazy undercoat, it takes forever to brush her and SO MUCH HAIR COMES OUT. My favorite thing about her is how she howls! We've taught her how to say 'I love you.' She also will sing happy birthday, (pretty badly, but she's adorable!!) Please adopt a shelter dog if you're looking for a pet! Mutts are all unique and amazing. And not to mention, are much healthier than a lot of purebred dogs. You might just wind up with a great pup like Rose! ❤️❤️❤️

My family brought our dog from a breeder for multiple reasons, so before you instantly hate me because of this, let me give our reasons for doing do. A rescue dog may not have been what was necessary for my family (Dad is allergic to animals which shed fur so a hypoallergenic dog was a must), may not have the right temperament which we desire, may not be the ideal size for our house or may need longer walks than we can give it, may not be pure bred, which then means that it would have a larger range of genetic related maladies to fall prey to, meaning that our insurance would be higher, generally there are more older dogs than puppies in the pound/shelter which would not be what we want as we wanted to be fully in control of our dog's development and finally we wanted a miniature schnauzer since my Grandparents owned several so we knew what we would be getting into. In buying our miniature schnauzer from a breeder we took a lot of steps to make sure we were going about things responsibly. We checked our national breeder registry (which has regulations for good breeding practices) for their list of miniature schnauzer breeders to find one close to us and we phoned the breeders to ask when their bitches would be having litters as well as other reliable breeders who may be expecting litters. Eventually we found such a breeder who was expecting pups with her own website (ironically called 'Not a Puppy Farm') where we could find pictures of previous litters, the bitches she had and advice as to what to expect and how to care for our dog. We eventually drove up to see the mother and the week old puppies, her documentation, the family tree of the puppies as well as answering all remaining questions she had for us regarding our purposes for the dog and daily routines. We chose our gorgeous puppy right then and after a second visit to see how she was doing and after she had her vaccines and tests we finally could take her home. ^ This is what buying from a reputable breeder looks like. There are a lot of steps and it can be quite complicated, but it was entirely worth it for the miniature schnauzer which is now sleeping on my sofa. Furthermore, by buying from a breeder, I rewarded responsible breeding. Whilst it may seem cruel, I would rather support those who breed dogs with multiple regulations and are concerned with the welfare of the dogs and the puppies than adopting the results of a Puppy farm or irresponsible breeding. By adopting the latter, you will not prevent further puppy farms/irresponsible breeding, but by buying the former you support responsible breeding and proper care (e.g the breeder we brought our puppy from could not breed her bitches more than a set number of times and had to wait a long time between litters to keep the bitch healthy). * Note: Breeders which breed dog breeds that have life affecting features (such as skulls too small to allow the brain room) should be attempting to breed away these features otherwise they are being irresponsible. Overall, I always feel that it is immensely unfair to hate on people that buy dogs. In many ways, it is more responsible and sustainable to buy from certified breeders than it is to adopt a dog from a shelter. This is not to say that it is wrong to adopt (indeed, I hope to adopt from a local shelter one day in the future) but that it is not wrong to buy from a responsible breeder and in many ways has multiple advantages (including ethical ones) to do so.

@Jay Vin99 I can totally understand your point of view, but personally, I don't really think there's anything wrong with preserving a breed that you find beautiful (If it's healthy) or one that is capable of amazing skills. (Such as breeds that are bred for saving lives or greatly assisting people with disabilities) I do plan on adopting my own first dog when I move out on my own, but my parents have chosen to buy our first two dogs from a breeder. Again, I'd prefer rescue, but I've dearly loved both of those dogs and I think the real problem with breeding, greater than it taking away from someone adopting a shelter dog, is the cruelty that can come with it. I think the biggest problem arises when you fail to do proper research on the breeder you're buying from and end up supporting someone who doesn't deserve it, thereby furthering the mistreatment of a whole new generation of dogs or even supporting a puppy mill. That being said, if anyone reading this is planning on buying a dog, please do your research. If you are purchasing from a Pet Store, it's useless to ask "do your dogs come from ethical breeders" because they are 100% going to tell you "yes" to promote their business and avoid getting in trouble, regardless of if it's true or not. Instead, ask who the breeder is so you can look into it yourself. There is video footage of them answering "yes" to said question, giving the breeder's name, and it turns out, "yes" was a lie, because upon looking into the breeder, investigators often find cruelty cases. Many, *many* pet stores that carry dogs are supplied by puppy mills and even independent small scale breeders can have unethical practices. But if you don't have a specific reason to get a purebred (My dad wanted a particular breed for how well it would fit into our household and something that he was confident could protect me since they're often busy and out of the house and I'm pretty much incapable of self defense) then I absolutely 100% agree that you should adopt a dog :) personally, I'm really hoping that after I've gotten my life together a bit, I can at least give back by making a habit out of volunteering at shelters. It's probably the first thing I'm gonna look into when I get my driver's license, to be honest.

My last dog before she died was an Australian cattle dog mix, no one knew what breed so technically she was a mongrel. She was a healthy dog, (though when we first got her she had a cold.)up until the very end when she got a leg tumor. I miss her a lot. She would often try to herd us into the living room due to her instincts as a cattle dog!

@@samaustin339 sorry to hear your loss mate. We recently lost our Shepard dog aswell ( don't know what kind of shepard he was, but he looked like a black Wolf) atleast he made it to 15 years. Then we also lost a german purebreed shepard that we picked up from the street. We didn't know how old he was, but he was abandoned and belonged to a Dutch family that lived in a town 50 KM from where I live and he was at the very least 8 years old as his last veterinary visit was 2011. He was the kindest and loving dog you could imagine, though we don't know at what age he died, atleast he found a loving family and pack 'till he found his end.

I prefer mutts, they are sometimes cuter and usually healthier. Also the ridge on the Norwegian Ridgeback can also cause paralysis and sometimes death. But if a healthy ridgeless is born, it's killed. The same way incest is illegal in humans, it should be illegal for people to purposely inbreed their pets. Cats are also going through the same thing but not as bad, yet.

". . . usually healthier." I agree. It depends on the crossing. The fact that this statement is contextual is proven by how several of the heavily mixed dog breeds do experience rather considerable health issues. In fact, if the dog, mixed or otherwise, has a high or low risk of developing health issues due to genetics it is almost always up to the care of the breeders that introduced two breeding individuals to one another. I'm sure that if dogs were let loose into the wild I'm sure we'd see purebreeds (As in largely homogenous) developing after a few generations due to environmental pressures; it seems, at least to me, that mixed breeds are not something nature promotes if there are no factors that would allow such mixing to find a niche were to survive. www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/genetic-dog-diseases-in-purebreds-and-mixed-breeds/ So, when is hybridization a good thing or even necessary? When the gene pool is too small to sustain a healthy, or viable, population or when the viable population happens to be expressing certain genetic disorders frequently enough that it can never do away with it through new generations.

That's "Rhodesian Ridgeback". The Norwegian Ridgeback, if memory serves, is a breed of dragon in the Harry Potter novels, and it must be emphasized because so many people now have a tenuous (at best) grip on reality, they don't really exist.

I agree, ive had 3 dogs, all mutts, only one with a helth issue from one of its breeds. My first dog was a big mix, some type of pit, american bulldog, ridgeback, and one other breed we could never figure out, she was realy friendly with people but not with most dogs, she got along with a beagle that would yell at her, and a rot mix that she wanted to bang (he was fixed, and had no interest, he climbed the fence to escape her humps) she loved playing with tires and hated the mailman (attacked shoes when he came by) and she lived a long and happy life of 16 years. The next dog I got, is still around now, she is a g-shep/chow/lab/??? Mix, she now has hip dysplasia because of her german Sheppard genetics, but she is still having a good life with some help from her humans, she still has controll of her bowels so its not too bad yet. She is about 14 now, and runs all the time in her dreams. We're going to give her some water therapy, and see if it helps, but when the day comes we want to take her to a beach and give her the best day ever, she loves water, roast beef sandwiches, and ice cream, she also loves being brushed and getting belly rubs and licking your arm any chance sge gets so we have quite a day planed for her. (She used to snatch only one food from your hand if it was in reach, and it was roast beef, she also used to literaly climb the pantry like a ladder, to steal and eat all the bread she could get, she also would get a dog cone from dq on hot days out on a walk, and one day she turned down the street for dq when it wasn't even hot, and wined when we tried to lead her the other way, she doesn't get these things much anymore, especially now, so i think she'll really like the day we have planed for her) Finally, my other current dog is a pug/pit mix (american pit bull terrior specifically, i call her a pig sometimes) she has a body like pugs 100 years ago, and no smooshed snout, she almost looks like a permanent pit puppy. She has no helth issues from the pug but she has all the personality, and she has beautiful brindle fur from the pit. She is almost 7 years old now, and still runs around at top speed and leaps over our other dog, she is very strong for a small dog too, she could probably drag almost 80lbs by her mouth, because when she plays tug with our larger dog, she drags her around, and she weighs almost 80lbs (shes honestly the best dog for me, so energetic and upliftin and also smart and loyal, she fallows me everywhere, is so darn cute, and so friendly, sometimes too much, she once scared a shitzu running up to play with him, he screamed and she looked sad, lol) Mutts are the best =w=

Now there's even a trend where people are breeding wild animals with domesticated ones. Mostly dogs and cats. The problem is these people are selling these animals to inexperience owners. Just because you owned a stubborn breed like a pitbull or husky, doesn't mean you can handle a wolf. Or because you tamed a feral cat that you can own a savannah. They need a lot of care and exercise. Plus there diet and needs are different. Most of the time people get these animals and have to get rid of them, or even put them down. Wolves are very pack oriented. If it's abandon or left alone for long periods of time, they suffer emotional and mental issues. That can lead to either destructive behavior or even aggression. Wild cat mix need to be mentally stimulated and exercised even more than a regular cats. Cats are already prey driven, now imagine if you make it even more wild. What's the point of having a cute puppy or kitten if it becomes a dangerous animal that you will either put down, get rid of, or worse keep it chained/caged up? Best thing to do is do a lot of research and prepare before you purchase any animal. Make sure you are ask a lot of questions if you're buying from a breeder to make sure they are responsible. Ask for any illnesses the parents could have passed, and if one or both parents are around. If they don't let you see them, be more cautious when buying from them. Or better yet, get an animal in need. The pound and shelters are a good place to start. And the shelters always let you meet the animals before adopting. Some even let you play with them before buying them. Volunteering in shelters before getting a pets will give you experience with them. Try playing with them or ask if you can walk them so you can get more comfortable with them. It's a good way to feel what it's like to have a pet without actually owning one. And just because an animal is senior doesn't mean it's not a good pets, they are usually more mellow than a younger animal.
