To put it in a nutshell, the real problem here is that, you can become a supervisory Police officer directly without serving as a Patrol Officer at the entry level unlike developed countries. where everyone has to start at the Patrol Officer level and gradually rise up the ladder on the basis of performance, specialized professional education & acquired competencies. In developed countries, Police service is more service-oriented while here it is more promotion & perks-oriented. The focus here is more on getting forced respect from subordinates and the helpless public than real heartfelt respect. The British colonial era archaic Police caste system having 4 different entry levels - Constable, Sub Inspector, DySP and IPS (Asstt SP) is the real reason for the overall failure of the Policing system in the country and its inability to evolve into a modern law enforcement in the real sense of the term. Policing is not only about academic brilliance or performance at competitive examinations, it is also about aptitude, love & respect for fellow countrymen & colleagues, spirit of self-less service & sacrifice.

Exactly. Police should start their career from constable or SI level only. Constables also need to be given better pay, benefits and promotions.

I wish India finds extremely giant reserves of oil, gas or any other high value and high demand resource, so that India can get rich in a short span of time like the Gulf. The oil money can be used to reform and modernise the police to international levels.
