Having a look at a neglected 1980s Specialized Stumpjumper, taking it to bits to see what needs replaced. Cool old vintage/classic/retro MTB, ready for its next life as a.......?

I still have this bike. that I bought new in 1988. And yes they are the original tyres on it. I still use it for commuting. Back in 1992 , I made a trip to Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus on this bike. Its literally undestructible! Btw I bought it in West Germany for 900 Deutsch Mark. The same year I bought a working VW beetle for 500 DM. :D Greetings from Hungary :)

The only thing wrong is that it's not in my garage....... The older mtb came with thicker break cables then the newer ones my opinion is they wanted to make sure you stopped lol and as breaks got better there was no more need for the thicker cables

That's a sick frame and paint job!

Thanks, it's the exact paint job I wanted. That's why I bought a bike that needed every part fixed :)

The stem has a tube inside that the cable goes through. Very easy to replace.

Sweet, I have already spent too much of my life trying to fish out cables from inside frames :)

Looked ap a few old catalogues and cant find it. Will try and measure it once I have a protractor with a bubble measure thingy on it.... I'd better get back on to this bike as I want to ride it soon!

@@W1DO I believe that from the paint color, and the cantilever brakes, that's a 1989. The 1988 Stumpies used a Ubrake under the chainstays. If it's a 1989, then it's a 70.5 degree head angle, and 73 degree seat tube angle.

@@achn2b what about a v-brake Stumpy ? I'm thinking mid 80's .I have Deore components. I just replace the lower bracket ,new crank, cassette.my back org. rim split so I'm getting new rims with Conti cross kings. Brake pads and cables.i bought the bike a few years ago with Shimano a530 pedals for 75.00 dollars

@@happyfreeliferc Not sure I understand the question. The Stumpy has V-brakes? New, or upgraded? V-brakes didn't come around til the mid-90's, but it's possible you have an 80's model that's been upgraded. Link to a picture?
