It definitely comes with age. I was walking the dog with my 15 year old son and saw a bag of rubbish thrown out of a parked car window. I wasn't having that in our local park! I told my lad to hang fire as I calmly walked up to the car (just happened to be an Audi A3) picked up the rubbish and tapped on their window. A youth who was practically lying down glared at me. I told him he'd dropped his rubbish and would he mind having it back to put in a bin. His mate was just about to have a go when he spotted my rather large German shepherd! The driver took the bag back from me and actually put it in the bin which was 3 parked cars away. Win for the old timer ( who's not quite 50 yet). Keep up the great content and on point rants!

The reason for the torque + angle etc is because of consistency. Using a torque wrench can still result in something like +/- 25%. For comparison an experienced operator just doing it by feel is about +/- 35%! Using a smaller torque value to snug things up then an angle gives about +/- 15%, much tighter control over clamping force.

Stood in a long queue at customer service in B&Q, at the front was a man in his 60s with cowed wife in tow. He was loud and aggressive to the assistant, and was claiming the paint he had bought was a quid cheaper at a store down the road so wanted a price match, the assistant replied they'd have to check the price by phoning up said store. 60's fella replied that he was offended that the store didn't trust his word and wanted to make a complaint about their service and attitude towards him, after a long rant. I reached tilt, walked up to the counter and slammed a pound coin on the desk in front of him, saying "here's your quid now feck (or words to that affect) off" to cheers from the rest of the queue.

I did a lap around a small carpark last week and there was only one space left but it was unusable as a plank in an electric BMW had parked a foot over the white line. Fortunately as I stopped to size up the impossible gap the driver came walking over with an arm full of food. I then asked him if he was any good at colouring in as a child because he was sh*t at keeping his car between the lines and maybe needed a few more lessons in parking. My wife was mortified but I felt he needed the shaming.

This episode had me in stitches! Absolutely loved it! My wife had to talk me out of a fight at the airport last year as a Dutch guy forced his way past my wife, knocking her over with his bag and then he told me my wife was over reacting and he was in a rush to check in. Still boils my blood, but at least no-one was arrested, my son didn't witness any really bad behaviour, and we made it back to the UK safely

Angle torqued fasteners have all the advantages ( issues ? ) you mention, but to my mind, the biggest advantage is you get more accurate clamp load, because it negates fastener friction. I'm sure you know the difference between oiled, ARP lubed, dry, rusty etc. Angle torque bypasses all of that. You basically settle the faster to a pre condition. That's the initial torque setting. This is usually before any material distortion occurs, and fastener fiction is still low. You then turn it the Angle, which clamps the piece down equally irrespective of the friction aspect. If that makes any sense😅
@MattTaylor-uj3ye5 ай бұрын
Yes agree all above. Basically think of a bolt as a spring! It clamps 2 surfaces together. Stretch it too far and it won't return to original length. You just reached yield point. Clamp pressure reduces. So tightening with torque is just measuring the friction of turning? So many variables. So measuring the stretch of a big end bolt is the best way. If you know the pitch of the bolt say 1mm pitch, 1 turn will stretch the bolt 1mm! That's where the angle is relevant to stretch. Max bolt clamp is upto the yield point! Longer the bolt the better! Imagine a very short spring stretching. The stretch to yield is very short. A long spring has a longer tolerance! Remember a bolt is a spring!!! Matt

I love it when people sit on quotes for months then finally decide to go ahead and can’t understand why the quote can’t be honoured any more. I have a mate that went out to quote some building work for a customer, the customer wanted to know absolutely everything from not only what materials were being used but where they were coming from then they wanted a step by step detail of everything being done and how it was being done, this was all to be put on the quote. My mate told them he didn’t spend years going to school and thousands of dollars on licenses, insurances, told etc etc to give free teaching lessons to people that want to do something themselves! The customer didn’t see the issue

Dave Grohl endorses this rant. Back when covid was a thing, at the very start, when people were queuing to get food, my local Sainsburys (Bridgemead in Swindon for us locals) has an Argos in it and you have to go into the store to access it. As everyone was desperate to buy any old shit to relieve the tedium of house arrest, unsurprisingly, Argos was one of the 'essential' shops that we could use, hence the queues were quite literally round the carpark and past Poundland. The store has put a queue in place to service Argos, but if you wanted food from the store, you could go in when it wasn't that busy. After an hour of queueing I got to the front, and I was next to go in. The security guard manning the queue (lets be honest, we're British, if there is ANYTHING we are good at is queuing, and his very presence was an insult) approached 2 blokes lingering outside and looking at the queue. They asked what the queu was for and when the guard informed them itr was for Argos, but if they just wanted food they could go in. You can guess what happened. They just went in. I followed in shortly after and unsurprisingly, there was Laurel and Hardy (but not funny) at the Argos counter. What happened next was uncomfortable. For everybody. Including the people at the bottom 4 tills. So I apologise. But the Argos queue outside got 2 people longer. The world is split into 3 types. 1: People that push in. 2: People that call it out. 3:Pepole that don't. 1 only exists because 3 exists. Boils my piss.

We have issues quoting for work too, 28:04 28:04 28:04 they have you quote, to then go with a cheaper quote (often not like for like on parts quality and new seals/gaskets etc). We then see them come back when the other garage haven't done it correctly or when theres an issue with another part that we quoted to do within that repair that the other garage haven't. They then have to pay our labour to replace or correct said part, causing their total costs to be higher than if we just did the job in the first place. It says it all when they wont go back to have it rectified, as they are so disappointed with the work they've just paid for. It's more frustrating when regular customers do it in an attempt to save costs, knowing that they are sacrificing the quality of the repair after we have given them such good service over the years. I guess hairdressers, plumbers etc have similar issues?

Ricky, you should offer a detailed engine build quotation as a service with a fixed price which can be deducted from the work if it goes ahead. We pay for car inspections, why not engine builds? Any paywall will filter out a lot of chancers and serious people won't mind if they really need the work done.

I was recovering from surgery on my ankle after a motorcycle accident. My mates thought it would be nice to take me to an Acdc tribute concert which was f**king awesome I might add… anyway I was on crutches and most people are giving me a bit of a wide birth and give me enough room to stand one legged with one crotch holding a beer and the other one supporting me. This entitled prick decided that the floor space that I was being given by everybody else was now his he decided to keep encroaching on my space so I was pushing my crutch further and closer to him at one point he knocked crutch around said sorry and then continued to do it, so the next time he did it I decided to put the crutch in such a position between his legs the next time he stepped back He fell flat on his arse when he looked at me as if it was my problem I said mate everybody else has given me the room. What gives you the entitlement to encroach on my space and ruin my night, he said there was no need for that tho… he’d been warned 1-2 times before but continued… so I thought that he deserved it 👍🏻

Torque is torque. An angle rating translates to a torque value because the bolt rotates and pulls at the rate of the thread inclination. What really matters is how hard the bolt is pulling against the outside thread which is hard to measure directly. So torque values are relatively repeatable but as soon as the bolt loads up, angle measurements are infinitely more precise.
@pjvenda5 ай бұрын
To be a bit more precise, it's the clamping force that matters. Getting there can be achieved by applying a measured torque to the bolt or spinning it a given angle once it is loaded. The angle while much more precise and repeatable, is relative to the starting clamping force.

With these 'new' bolt types - does ambient temperature matter? If you did a cylinder head bolt to torque+angle in winter in an unheated shed, would it be ok? I'm guessing everthing would be cold too, so it would all expandereano the same into the warmer months? Would say 2degC to 40degC ambient make any significant difference? My cheap-arsed torque wrech had a temperature next to its 'quality control' certificate - curious if ambient temperature makes a significant difference to bolts/components? I've never thought about it before 😆 I remember learning to drive (Mum was a driving instructor) - stop start traffic in a one-way bit we are car 10-15 or so in the line - pleb in an Astra kept lunging forwards and lurch braking behind us, that close I could just about see the scuttle of his car in the rear view mirror. I get out of the car, get into his face and clearly state "My Mums married and I ain't gay - why the F are you trying to get up our arse F-wit?" After getting my point across, I get back into the car - Mum goes ballistic "My company name is on top of the car!" I'm 43 now, still laugh at that moment. Superb content as always 👍

Same as you, gig patrons piss me right off. Young entitled students going to gigs to shout a conversation to each other for the whole event, or stand on their phones not interested until the 1 song they know comes on. Me.and Mrs, both short, at a gig at Manchester academy, 2 tall girls wander in after the 1st song of the support act, and stand directly in front of us, in the 8" gap we had left (I know it's was 8", ask me how). They spent the half hour shouting to each other, uninterested in the music. They wandered off at the interval, and as the main act came on, they wandered back and pushed into the same spot, where there was now, no room at all. I told her politely, to fork orf, and she looked disgusted an old bloke dared talk to her like that. "It's a gig, and I'm watching here", to and my response of " you're forking not, and you don't have reserved standing at gigs, so off you fork". She and her tramp friend did move away, with a flurry of abuse towards us. I genuinely feel it's the majority of younger people that have never had discipline or explained about "other people" to quote ferris bueller. I am.older than you, and have been unable to hold my tongue for many years, online and in person, which usually gets the entitled, dumb and ignorant people's back up, which is really satisfying
