Unless that was the point. I mean if the board of directors or whoever he answered to wanted it, he might have went with it as malicious compliance. A way to show them "see? I told you it was a bad idea. Now can we are this idea for good before it gets worse?" To me it seems like the sly, sneaky thing he would do when he couldn't strong arm his position for control

At the beginning of the show it is made clear that Carla is one of the few people Dr. Cox has truely respect for and cares about at the hospital. Later JD, Elliot and Turk also get his respect as well as him being friends with Kelso once he retires.

The thing about someone watching you while trying to do work is universal and not just related to medicine. I used to be a stoneman and did gravestone work, sometimes the family members wanted to be there for the first setup and man was that the only time when everything would go wrong if they could. It was so stressful that even if everything went smoothly I hated having someone looking over my shoulder when trying to focus.

Can't find it now but partner read a study during her course about hip replacements done on conscious patients compared to those fully under anaesthesia and it found a better recovery time and less pain afterwards. There was some indication that doctors had not been as aggressive with removal of the old joint and insertion of the new joint during it because the patients were either able to, or at least the doctor perceived they may be able to, identify the sensations. Episode reminded me of this both because of the patients family watching, wonder if that would make any difference in the care taken by the surgeons, but even more so because of Turks comments about seeing a patient as a machine that needed to be repaired. Even as a surgeon whose majority of interaction is with an unconscious patient potentially would be too easy if you don't see a patient as a real person to be far more forceful because it was easier for you than required.

Interesting! I just had a procedure done on me where everywhere else in the country it's done under aenesthesia and in my city (the capital) without. I freaked out and called in advance and had to beg for several minutes for the full sleep as I didn't want to be awake for that. Like, what if you cough or sneese? And the organ operated on will move and, as a result, explode or get cut wrong. I just don't get it.

@@JessTheMD to my recollection, I can’t remember a bad episode. However I understand that’s it’s unrealistic and unfair to expect you to even watch, let alone react to them all and edit the videos etc. I find it truly amazing that you manage to create any of these videos. Considering you’re not only a doctor but a mother also. Both of which I imagine to be very demanding. So individual episodes I would suggest are: Season 1 episode 1. Pilot episode. season 1 episode 10 titled ‘six or seven minutes’. Season 1 episode 22 titled ‘Luna’. Season 2 episode 1 titled ‘your turn’. There are many more I could suggest but these alone are quite a lot. And as I say, I’d imagine you’re an extremely busy person. In fact I feel quite honoured that you took the time to reply to my comment so thank you. If you would like anymore suggestions, I’d be more than happy to help. Anyway, I should end this here as it’s beginning to feel like an essay you won’t wanna read 😂 Take care.

Regarding Mono, Vapes. We're actually seeing a lot of diseases like mono having increased rates, and the most likely cause is due to how frequently vape pens are shared. The vaping itself doesn't cause it, but most people who have vapes are pretty easy going about sharing it with anyone who's around; potentially infecting a dozen people of the course of a day.

True story. I'm one of seven kids. My mother had worked for an OBGYN. She traveled alone, twice across the country via train so he could handle the deliveries. I was born after she went to the hospital once she finished ironing. When my youngest sister was born, my father was in charge of the 6 kids and my mother drove herself to the hospital, only to find out that her doctor was at another hospital about 20 miles away. This was before the interstate system. She drove there alone and delivered my amazing younger sister.

As someone who's lost someone in a hospital at a young age. I gotta say, Death is traumatizing either way, for me i think it would be better to see the medical professionals fighting until the very end. because you can be told they did everything they could, but it never really lands emotionally. and processing hearing about a loved one dying is more difficult, because of all the natural but irrational/emotional questions. but not matter what it's always hard losing someone close at a young age.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD Жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤️ it is extremely traumatizing. When I lost my grandma to an accident that involved a drunk driver hitting her, our whole family was certain that doctors didn’t do what they could to save her because she was an organ donor (yes… we believed that. I think denial definitely had something to do with this kind of crazy thought…). Now, having been in medicine and seen first hand how these things happen, I know that is absolutely not the case. It was our family’s rationalization for a senseless tragedy, but it wasn’t true. We do everything we can to save the person in front of us. Truly. We’re here only to help. Unfortunately, sometimes are efforts are futile, and when we know it, we have to accept it and help the family accept it. It’s so hard for all involved. I’m so sorry it’s something you’ve had to deal with, especially as a young child 😔
@RealJohnnyAngel
@RealJohnnyAngel Жыл бұрын
@JessTheMD thank you. I know consciously that they did everything they could. And in my loved one's case surgery wouldn't have done anything. But they knew it was terminal and I picked up on the "giving up on saving him" attitude without realizing why or what it meant until after he died. With context I've been able to understand now that I'm an older adult. But it still comes up in therapy now and then.

Something you might find interesting to learn about if you haven't. I currently have a heart that works at 35% compression, kidneys at 21% function, diabetes for 23 years, and was born with pituitary dwarfism. What you might find interesting is that I was born with another problem that I didn't find out about until this year at 43 years old. I was born with Heterotaxy that presented malrotation of my GI track including hyposplenia and a malformation of the pancreas. This led, in the 80's, to using a research drug that later became known as Human Growth Hormone, which led to the diabetes, which led to congestive heart failure, and recently ESRD. The Heterotaxy was found this year when I went to the ER for severe pancreatitis. Talk about a road of discovery that started literally at the beginning! Anyhow, the Heterotaxy and the pituitary dwarfism are connected and both very rare. The Heterotaxy usually ends in death after the first year of birth. I figured it might catch your medical interest to learn about.

@@JessTheMD my PCP missed something that I had said, which caused her to order the wrong CT scan ( she didn't include the chest). The surgeon then had to redo it. But my overall outcome of the surgery was as good as possible. Chest CT scans every 6 months for the foreseeable future but with luck, that is the end of it. I didn't list my PCP appt in my little list above, but basically that was a rushed 5 mins also, and it apparently didn't register when I said the tumor had started one place and grown into a different place, which was a clue it wasn't the type of tumor she thought it was and indicated the chest needed to be included with the pelvic and abdomen CT. It didn't delay anything, just caused an extra trip to the hospital.

Not in hospitals I've worked in! However, in my medical school, they did have one of those and it was super cool. It wasn't one that was still in use, and just used as a "museum" of sorts (sort of private museum just for the students and people that worked at the campus), but it was really cool to see!!

So I starting watching your scrubs videos, and loved them. Then I saw your subscriber count and thought "oh was this just people that typed in the same thing I did and this video went viral?" Which wasn't the case, you got plenty of views from reaction content. So then I thought "does she only do reaction content?", which also wasn't the case. Then I noticed the videos I can tell you care about, almost guaranteed, more than the reaction videos like face masks and maternity performed so much lower. Which bummed me out. I guess what the point of the comment is, even though those other videos got 10x less views, don't get down and be afraid to put out the things that matter. Content is content as far as youtube is concerned, and if you have to slip videos in between react videos, you are truly helping the 500-1,000 people that will listen. Even if its 1 person.

ah yeah the lovely part where you can't dump the patient, you just treat him - and then you give him the massively overinflated bill the insurance would have covered. Like how much are we talking about here? Six figures, right?
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD 11 ай бұрын
Depends on the hospital stay 😊 a good friend of mine had a major medical issue (not giving more info for their privacy) and the hospitalization was a 3 week stay in a specialized ICU… I honestly thought the bill would be over $1 million (that would be billed to insurance), but the total billed to insurance was around the $250k mark. Which is still a CRAZY amount of money, but surprisingly less than I expected for what this person had going on. Don’t get me wrong - it’s still an insane amount of money… but I guess what I’m trying to say is it depends on what for and for how long the hospital stay is?
@fahrradmittelfranken8207

@@JessTheMD a hospital bill of $50.000 would bankrupt around 95% of all Americans for the rest of their life though. These inflated numbers make insurance policies unreasonably expensive as a side effect.

I wouldn't want to watch a family member be operated on (although I think it'd be kinda cool to tell them "I've seen what your insides/guts look like"... idk, I admit I'm weird lol) but I would love to watch someone be operated on especially myself. I asked the doctors if they could skip the drape thing during my c-section but they refused. I used to want to be a NICU doctor or nurse but I don't think I can handle knowing such an innocent life is in my hands. I'd be fine with cuddling and rocking the baby and even changing those tar poop diapers which I guess would probably be a CNAs job but now I hear so many horror stories about how crappy nurses are treated 😢

11:30 what actually is 'swan-ing'? They never explained it and I have no medical background
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD Жыл бұрын
I considered talking about that but I thought it might be too technical and a little boring to put in the video! 😅🙈 I’m assuming he meant swan-ganz catheter, which basically is a catheter that is inserted to get a better idea of right heart and lung function. It’s a great tool for us to use if someone is really not doing well in the ICU - gives us much more accurate info regarding cardiac output, assessing vascular resistance, or the cardiac valves, looking at right sided cardiac chamber filling pressures, etc. It’s often used to assess patients with cardiogenic shock, unexplained shortness of breath or pulmonary hypertension. So, like I said - pretty technical, so I thought it might be a bit too much/too boring for the video lol 😊 hope that helped!!

Even funnier, Turk's litter French was very broken. Really he said "I an Eiffle Tower pants." It would really be "J'ai un Tour Eiffel dans mon pantalon." The actress who plays Elliot comes from a multi lingual home. She's actually fluent in French and German, which the show puts to good use.
