It's very simple to decide which sail I should take. I judge what I see everyone else do. Then I go a little bigger (I'm a big guy). Then I head out on the water. And the correct sail size would be the other one. The one I didn't rig.

Do some repairs of janky second hand gear. Corroded clam cleats, outhaul line changes, routine gear maintenance, stuck booms. The usual things you'd find out the hard way if you're trying to get into windsurfing on a budget.

Hey Simon! Great to see you back on a windsurf board! Great content. In the Netherlands, it can be gusty, so a cambered sail is helpful. If I go out, I often have 3 sizes with me.
@Cookiesports5 ай бұрын
It’s definitely important to have a quiver of sales so you can select. Generally, I find cams aren’t particularly necessary though, and the extra weight can make it harder to control through the gusts.

Welcome back Cookie! I asked this before but pleasee you could explain what fin size to use, your previous answer was to use what the board came with but my gear was used when i got it and it came with several different fins. Cheers brother
@Cookiesports4 ай бұрын
Simplest answer here…check out the recommended fin for the board- the one it’s supplied with. That’s a great starting point. After than you go smaller, until the point you can’t get moving, or it’s spinning sideways a lot.

Great vid! Do you think it's really preferable for intermediate windsurfers to get a set of the same brand rather than picking here and there? For instance, I've got a gunsails 6.3 that I use in flat water and lighter winds with a free ride board, while I'm thinking about getting a spy 5.0 to match my 100lts fsw board for higher winds! I'm 80kgs... Thanks if you can advise!
@CookiesportsАй бұрын
It’s definitely nicer to have the same brand of sails though your quiver… but obviously cost is an issue. At least try to stick with the same style through the sizes… so if you have a couple of Spy’s (great choice by the way), then look out for other freestyle waves. I have Spy’s for higher wind use, then ACX or AC0’s for lighter winds and free-race style surfing.

Interesting to look at Wikipedia article about windsurfing and see the chart guide to windspeed and sail size for planing. Only about 3 or 4 knots windspeed difference between a 5 m2 and 6 m2 for a 75 kg person. So if you're on a 6m2 well powered and the wind increases by 3 knots do you feel like you need to switch to a 5 m2 ? Would be interesting if you could tell what the windspeed was from what sail you were on and how powered up you felt, like if there was a chart for your set up; board and sail size, rider weight etc
@Cookiesports3 ай бұрын
So much more to it the and Wikipedia page, or some grids/matrix ideas I’ve seen about. I can sail a 4.0 and 5.0 in the same wind, on the same board… you can make adjustments to be underpowered and overpowered and just crack on! 🤩🤩
@ROCKETRICKYHАй бұрын
Most of those grids are completely silly. They use a simple algorithm based on sail lift produced by the wind and the area of the sail. This produces wildly optimistic use of tiny sails in strong winds. For example, in 30kts it would have me on a 3.6 whereas I use a 4.5. I use my 3.5 in 40kts. The Calculation doesn't take into account the area needed to get waterstarted, get through white water, to get planing, etc.
@ROCKETRICKYHАй бұрын
@@Cookiesports I agree completely.

I find with overpowering that the chop is my limiting factor . I ride a freerace board and once it is superpowered it's too fast for messy chop. It's just too tiring dodging ramps etc .I then find a waveboard more comfortable. I'm in my 60s so I'm not as young as I used to be.🙄
@hanslaught23515 ай бұрын
Yep, simple formula for me: 4 foot waves, have to use waveboard (or foil). Smaller waves, can go with the big board -- freeride in my case. Sail options are quite varied and being overpowered is fine in flat water if you're feeling energetic. It can sap some serious energy though.
@suelinton34535 ай бұрын
@@hanslaught2351 I speedsail so I'm used to sailing overpowered in flatwater but the I'm getting too old for serious overpowered sailing in chop..😁

Hi Cookie. Love the channel. What I'd love is a video on gybes where you go through common faults. Why do I always fall of midway round on the inside. Different issues with light wind and low speed or high wind and rig control etc.
@richardm96885 ай бұрын
I also would like to see this about gybing. I find it difficult to gybe in moderate winds when the board starts to accelerate as you point downwind to start the gybe. I end up heading back upwind to drop speed and do a sort of very slow, awkward beginner gybe just to get it done. Water starts, and how to react if the sail falls on top of you while you're hooked in and trying not to panic to release yourself and get out under the sail? Thank you.

Welcome back Cookie! I think sail type is missing as a variable in the vid?🤔 Stiffer sails, slalom, freeride sails you may (and sometimes should vs. wave or fs) go bigger more easily while for wave, softer or fs sails, especially 4 battens or less, it tends to become trickier if you go bigger. As an example, on my 5 batten wavesails I can easily go 0,5m2 bigger vs. my 4 battens for the same conditions and board. As a rule of thumb, the stiffer the sail, the harder it gets to be overpowered (so you tend to aim bigger), but that often comes at a cost, mainly maneuverability and/or power delivery.
