Ann is 100% correct about American school supplies. My sons are in middle school and high school, and I am so annoyed that their teachers want the ugly marble composition notebooks in sixth grade and standard spiral notebooks later. At least they can choose their pens and pencils! When I worked at a brokerage house, I was one of the few people who actually used notebooks and a good calendar. It's important to jot down things, especially when you have to go back months later to follow up. You need that information of whom you called, account numbers, other contacts. Everyone, in school or not, needs good notebooks and good pens.

Hi! A few of my family members are career school teachers; I think 3 or so teach in high school. I just want to mention that sometimes, teachers cannot get sufficient classroom supplies for their students from the school itself. There isn't money in the school budget for it. So sometimes a teacher will pay out of their own pockets to get supplies for a class. It shouldn't ever happen that way, but this is what some school districts seem to force teachers into. I imagine that having to pay might influence a teacher in deciding what s/he wants students to use in the way of notebooks. I'm not giving excuses, or saying that this is always what happens, but sometimes it does. With all that said...both Ann and you are 100% correct: American school supplies are terrible.

Everytime I watch one of your videos I always think "I wish I had that when I was studying". I am an Administrative Assistant and definitely my essentials would be a Kokuyo Jibun Techo as a school planner, the Kokuyo Smart Ring notebook (to not waste a full notebook on a single subject), an Energel pen, a Pilot knock Frixion, a Uniball Jetstream multipen 4 +1, Kokuyo Novita expandable book (to store by subject all the presentations and documents I had to prepare) and a Doughnut Macaroon Large Backpack to fit everything. It would have been so convenient, it's never too late to go back and study something else, but if I do, this time I'll be prepared hahaha.

Outside of Lisa Frank stickers, lol, Ann is SO right about American school supplies. I'm an 80's-90's student and if anything, I wish I had the Campus Kukuyo binders and notebooks, and the Pilot Frixion erasable pens! Erasermate pens were a nightmare, lol, and would tear your paper no matter how careful I was when trying to erase. I did have a multi-pen due to frequent trips to Kinokuniya Bookstore in Little Tokyo, lol.

This video was so fun to watch! Earlier this year at age 24 I graduated with my Associates degree and happily used stationery from Jetpens during that time! My favorites were the Zebra Sarasa Mark On Gel pens combined with the Marvy PastelLiner Highlighter, with the Tombow Mono Air Refillable Correction tape. What I loved most was how fast the gel pens dried so I could highlight them with the soft pastel highlighters. Regular fluorescent highlighters hurt my eyes, so I love those for that reason. The Tombow Correction tape is the best for being refillable! It was so much better than constantly throwing out the Bic correction tapes, which don't even work as well.

I still use the pencil I used in college, because it's still my favorite pencil! It's the Uni Chroma, which JetPens sadly does not carry. It has a side button to extend the lead, and the lead sleeve slides back as you write, keeping the lead protected without getting in the way. It also has an extremely generous twist-up hexagonal eraser that works very well. It is by far the best cheap mechanical pencil I've ever used, and the fantastic eraser makes me reach for it more often than my thrice-as-expensive Alpha Gel Kuru Toga, which has a laughably tiny eraser. I honestly don't understand why JetPens doesn't carry it.

One thing I'd love to have years ago are customizable multi-gel pens which are still not commonly available with reasonable prices in my country. I used to use up at least 2 gel pens per week despite juggling 4 colors when taking notes. (and still have time to doodle with my mechanical pencil and other stuff waiting for my classmates to catch up). Not even my Workstation laptop can keep up with my mindmapping on Xmind during colleges. now I juggle 12 fountain pens with different colors just to enjoy the tactile feel of handwriting. Kokuyo Campus slide binder is still my favorite one I carry around since it became available to me (sadly, after finishing college). Refillable binders and notebook-style binders are best notebooks for perfectionist & organizing lovers like me.

Yes, I miss my high school days. I think the stationery quality back in the 70s was better than it is today because I remember using fountain pens during those years. I used a steno pad in my shorthand class, and regular filler paper for all my other classes, and the paper stood up well to pen and ink.

I could've saved myself so much pain from getting pinched by metal binders if I knew about Jetpens (or stationery) in middle school 😅. As a grad student now, I'm tempted to get a squishy ringed binder just because, even though I much prefer notebooks and the zebra sarasa vintage clips in pretty much all of the colors, with a few cheaper yet still solid fountian pens to feel the part of being the dark academia aesthetic

I was never able to find what I really wanted in stationary until I discovered Japanese stationary! Ann gets it 🙌🏽 I purchased my first Kokuyo campus notebook (biz version) and I am using it for everything. I'm excited to get the multipack so I can separate my thoughts/notes/ideas, etc.

I would've liked the Kokuyo Campus Smart Ring Binder for sure, and I have one now! Though, as a computer science student, I didn't really need to handwrite that much. Really only math homework most of the time. I used graph paper pretty much exclusively, and I got a ton of it for free every semester (so much so that I _still_ have some of that. I don't use it much anymore. Not fountain pen friendly). BUT I would probably send myself a good fountain pen (or ten) - my hands used to cramp up during finals so bad. Which was probably a combination of using free ballpoint pens and my writing style. Mind you, I would not have spent a lot of money on a pen then, so I'd probably say a TWSBI ECO, EF nib, and a bottle of Noodler's X-Feather (Black or Blue) would've been ideal. And maybe some good highlighters that don't smear much for color coding, which I didn't used to do but probably should have.

I retired a few years ago and started taking college classes again. My biggest discovery was the Kokuyo line of B5 paper, notebooks, and binders. I mostly use the Smart Binder Notebook that holds 60 sheets. I like the Shikkari paper since I mostly use mechanical pencil for notes. My favorite mechanical pencil-the Platinum Zero Shin-came from JetPens too, but sadly it’s no longer made. Good thing I stocked up on them and have a lifetime supply.

American school confuses me so much. In the uk we were giving the book to write in for each class by the school and in secondary school (11yrs old to 16yrs) we were also given planners every year. The only supply’s you had to buy were a pen, pencil, protector, ruler, calculator and a sketchbook for art class and all of there were available at school to be bought for cost (eg the school made no profit selling them to us). People did bring extra stuff in for fun (I found coloured pencil for geography and a permanent mark for science class most helpful) but if extra stuff was needed school had class sets of them.

Jetpens didn't exist while I was at school. The Kokuyo Campus binder would have been such a blessing to have in the late 1990s. Imagine going to school carrying four textbooks in your backpack AND having to keep a massive triangular plastic binder!

Connie: Ah, fellow English major, you know my woes of writing and carrying bricks for books lol I color-coded all of my notebooks for class, too. So handy to pick them up easily and go. I used to have them in one big 5 subject notebook (college ruled of course), but the sections didn’t have the same amount of paper lol… I also got into stationery because of a pencil. Someone left behind a Zebra Tech 2 way shaker pen and I gave it a new home lol Couldn’t find anything like it after though. I wish we had textbooks on tablets like they do now. It would have greatly helped my back lol… Ann: THEY DO SUCK, SING IT LOUD AND PROUD! There is nothing like Japanese and Korean stationery to make the school year better. I doodled in the margins with a crappy ballpoint pen, too haha My Japanese teacher had different shaped paper clips and I was like omg I need these! If I had a Kuru kuru~ Toga for Japanese class, that would have been SO handy lol Having one notebook divided in different subjects didn’t work for me either, but I would have loved refillable notebooks for lightweight carry and organized notes back in the room. I remember when I was in HS, for one class I needed to have a 60-page or something notebook specifically, but I convinced my teacher my writing was small enough I could do it in a 32-page notebook JUST so I could use a cute Japanese one. When I was in school, my go-to supplies were a mechanical pencil with a knurled grip section. I'm not sure what brand it is because the side is covered by a sticker and has been for years. Other than that, Pilot Precise V5s were my favorite pens and I even still have one that I got somewhere between 2005-2008 that still works. If I went back to school today, I'd definitely opt for a Rotring Drafting Pencil, some of the Pilot Multiball Rollerballs, Kokuyo Campus Ruler, Sakura Sumo Grip Eraser, Kokuyo Campus Notebooks, Uni Jetstream in Black, Pilot Precise V5 RTs and some sort of fountain pen in with blue ink, probably a Platinum Preppy F or EF... maybe multiple Preppys with different ink colors. And either Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens or Pentel Sign Pens for headers and fancy things.

I definitely do NOT miss high school AT ALL. College may have been a bit different if I approached it differently. That said, I learned via JetPens that the standards in Japan for consumables are higher and it shows. Even 25 years ago, when I would go to Staples or elsewhere... binders, pens, pencils, etc. were all rather disposable. At one point, the standard was a Five Star notebook. Five Star today though is very mid.

When I was in college, that's when netbooks started getting popular, so that's what I had. It actually worked out pretty well since we had to download powerpoints and email profs anyway, so I was happy. If I were to go analog tho, I'd definitely go for the frixion pens I use now with one of the notebook systems where you can refill the paper like binders. Maybe have a binder hardcover thing to protect them while they're in the bag, since I think they're all very flexible. Either the campus or maruman ones, I like them both. I currently use sunstar brand standing pen cases, so definitely those. Not much of a highlighter, but if I had just one, it'd be the propus cause I need to see where the hell where I'm going 😭 I don't really use pencils, especially since frixions can erase, so no opinions on that haha. Also the only pencil I still have and use is a really old staedtler from my middle school days. I just really hate using erasers xD

I discovered Jetpens back in 2009 when I went back to school to finish my bachelor's degree. I was really on a tight budget and I had the following in my nomadic black pencil case: 2 Uni Kurutoga mechanical pencils, 1 Bic retractable 4-in-1 ballpoint pen, 2 of each of the Uni signo 150 0.38mm that came in 6 different colors (black, hunter green, violet black, blue, blue black and red). Tombow mono correction tape, Stabilo highlighters that came in 3 colors: neon yellow, orange and pastel blue and 2 of Sakura's Sumo Grip erasers. But of course, I had some of the Daiso stationery like their sticky notes, page tabs, and few of their notebooks. But didn't quite liked it and after a quarter, I had to change to 3" hole binder, but used Kokuyo loose leaf paper with 6mm dotted rule. I preferred Japanese stationery over American stationery because of its quality, smooth writing, and it is compact. They make studying more fun! I would say. American stationery really sucks big time because they are so clunky, big and so old-fashioned durable. Until now, I still use the same Uni 0.5mm pens for color coding on most of my recipe development notebooks and culinary journals either home or professionally. I am a chef / consultant. I had graduated to more stationery like translucent sticky notes, washi tapes, gel pens and love the Uni Kurutoga mechanicals pencils on different models like the Advance and the Uni Alpha Switch. Then I had recycled my old Japanese pencil cases by putting a first aid kit and pill box on my backpack. Jetpens just made my studying back then more fun, fashionable and functional to me. I have seen a few other students during my Taxation class, and saw what kind of pens they had while notetaking housed in unique pencil cases. Sometimes it caught my eye, and asked the student what they were using. I am grateful that Jetpens existed and sells unique and curated stationery for everyone!

If I were picking for my freshman year of college, I would get a medium nib Pilot Metropolitan with a converter, a bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Budo and Ku-Jaku, and a pack of kokuyo campus notebooks with covers. Maybe a Uni ball Kuru toga and a pack of nanodia leads for mathematics. I tended to take those notes and exams in pen in my later years anyway. My friends thought I was nuts. I also discovered JetPens during my college years and bought all manner of pens to hopefully defeat hand pain while taking notes. I deathgrip to the extent that even squishy gel grip pens didn't help much. Discovering fountain pens really salvaged my grade point average. I could finally take good notes for the entire lecture.

Living in Europe, it's SO weird seeing Americans talk about having to buy notebooks for high-school. When I was in school, all of my notebooks and exercise books were provided *by* the school for all students. Kids shouldn't have to pay to be able to study.

I got to go back to school for a second degree in civil engineering and I already knew about JetPens for a few years, so I actually got to do this in real life. Pencil - Kokuyo FitCurve. I love the weight distribution and the long eraser. Perfect for frequent 3-5 hr math/physics/chem hwwk sessions. I can't do Kurutogas bc their weight distribution feels like the writing end is way too light and they always come w teeny, tiny erasers. I love this pencil so much I made sure to buy multiples of the other colors before they were discontinued so that I have a lifetime supply. I hope Kokuyo brings these back in fun colors again. I would love to own the red-white-black one. XD Multipen - I bought my Hi-Tec C coleto bodies and refills bc 2 Bic multipens broke on me in one semester - both cracked in the same place where the blue connects to white. Of my most used Coleto bodies, my oldest is 6yo and the other is 3yo. Neither have broken. I chose the Coleto system bc 1) theirs is the only one whose refills show the colors, 2) there are a lot of colors, and 3) I love writing in 0.3. Notebooks - for classes I'd rarely review or didn't even care about: super thin notebooks like the Kokuyo Campus ones. If I don't care about the class, why should it waste space in my bag? Notebooks - for classes I'd actually want to review: spiral notebooks w unlined paper. I hate lined paper for math, physics, and engr classes. Lines are so distracting and limiting for diagrams and equations. My fav were the Muji B5 craft notebooks. The 80 pages were usually enough for a whole class and I loved the off-white paper. Homework paper - Notes go in a notebook, but hmwk was loose-leaf. Blank white, printer paper for the win. Higher quality and sometimes even cheaper than lined paper, unlined printer paper makes it so easy to write and review STEM hmwk. And u can punch it w a normal 3-ring hole-punch. Not some tortuous, partial holepunch for proprietary papers. Agenda - Nothing really fit my needs - so MS Excel for the win. For school, I liked having a hardcopy of a my day divided into half hours like a Google calendar bc I really needed to see when my classes, breaks, club activities, and free time were. I'd print out blank weekly copies w my classes and club times pre-filled in. For monthly views, I would print out a long, continuous table on 8.5x11" for a 3-4 month overall calendar so I could see my semester in one shot - extremely useful to see how long u have btwn midterms and finals. Then you can place these either inside ur 3-ring binder or in the binder cover.
