@@Angel_Hearted50 It's not easy to get the front tummy part of the dress to sit taught and flat and the "Boob" part to fit right, Mine ended up wrinkled on the tummy bit and "saggy" on the boobs necklace/cleavage area. I was disappointed, it looks really easy. but it isnt. Maybe i'll get the impetus to have another go in winter. Thx for the reply.

She taught sewing on TV for several decades and has a lot of info on how to alter patterns. Nancy passed away a few years ago. But, her videos are fantastic.

I used my old Bernina 117K (made in 1938/39) to make all my own clothes, and all my kids clothes. It still works, but it's heavy, and I'd need a table to install it in, and I'd love to do that, but my lovely daughter found a little used Pfaff. I'm using it, and I'm glad I've got it, but it's hard to get used to. I guess I have a lot of old muscle memory of the more industrial machine. Also, I learned on my mom's industrial machine. I have a lot of those stitches, and am getting used to using some of them, but I don't have the scissors or the stop/start buttons. It's fine, and I'm lucky to have it, and everything I see about new machines, helps me understand it a little better. Thanks for posting this great information.

My Brother machine from Walmart works great. Easy to thread, easy to change tension, lots of stitches and under $200. Eight big quilts and five years of projects and it works great. Great for beginners, I bought my daughter one to take to college. Tutorials are easy to follow.

Linda Elmore It may work great for what you do or occasdional usr,, however the inside frame is plastic and in time, if you use it a lot, it will crack.

Also, after reading reviews and doing tons of research, buying from big box stores or Amazon can be iffy. For every good review there are at least 2 poor reviews, and these are not by experts. You got lucky, and I'm happy for you, but I feel a brick and mortar store with backup professional help wins hands down.

I just advised my SIL on buying a new machine...she is a beginner. I told her above all...buy from a DEALER! No Amazon or big box purchase under any circumstances for a sewing machine! They are there when you need service, always.

I am a beginner and just received a Singer 2277 machine which I ordered and have to get supplies, material, and thread I will need to do the job with. A top of the line machine wasn't what I was looking for since I don't plan to make this a money making business using the machine and just got interested after the COVID-19 pandemic. I've just brought a brother machine from Walmart cause there wasn't a store that carried what I wanted. It's important to get the proper settings, stitches ect but if your a beginner and don't know how long you'll be interested in sewing or how often your gonna sew then I don't think it's a good idea to buy a "good" machine that costs couple hundred dollars or more then end up sitting in your closet for the rest of it's life. Hopefully I'm lucky and the model I chose will last me couple years then I can upgrade to better one after graduation😂

I have an old Brother sewing machine. It’s not plastic :). They don’t have parts for it anymore. They don’t even have records of ever making it, according to Brother lol. The one thing it doesn’t have is a walking foot. I tried a universal one from a sewing machine store and it wouldn’t work. So if I was shopping that’s one feature I’d look for. Thx for your videos 😀

yep, I have one with the needle threader but I never use it I cannot put my head on that trick I use a little metal threader work perfect for my eyes. If you buy from a dealer you just need to ask. If you buy from a big bix store,there is no one to ask. But, the machines in the big box stores are made for big box stores, even though they may have the brand name & look exactly like one at a dealer. They are most likely plastic inside instead of metal like the ones at a dealer.

You can buy Brother machines from a dealer (if you have them in Nigeria) and some of them are the same as the Babylock but cost a lot less. They are made in the same factory and the differences are very small.

Hi Lawrence - The machines in this video are the (excellent) Baby Lock brand and only available from dealers unless you find (as she suggested) a used, reconditioned model. I've been sewing for over 60 years and have used MANY machines, from those built in the late 1940's to a massive, modern Brother brand electronic quilting machine that does everything including the sideways stitch, which I rarely use. DON'T look for a machine in Best Buy! It would be just like buying at Walmart or Target, etc. Those machines are specifically designed for that market and are junk. You'll spend $69 to $100 or so and when it breaks down (and it will), it will most likely not be repairable and you'll end up buying another machine. A waste of your hard-earned money! Use Google and look for a Baby Lock or Brother dealer in your area, visit them and ask to see their simplest mechanical and simplest computerized machines. Look for the features mentioned in this video, particularly the speed control and the needle up/down feature; they're a big help for beginners. Both Baby Lock and Brother make excellent machines. Often dealers have wonderful, refurbished used machines and the prices are reasonable. Quality is worth the price. And be to sure they how you how to CLEAN your machine - if done regularly, it will save you a lot of beginner heartaches. Silk chiffon is NOT a fabric for beginners. I'd suggest you ask the dealer to show you some cotton gauze if they have it. It will have a nice drape and is semi-sheer. It's not exactly the easiest to use either, but if you're determined to try, it's a better choice. Dealers usually sell patterns too so ask them to show you some for menswear. Good luck! p.s. You won't need the sideways stitch - not as a beginner.

Yes, they'll tell you that. The machines make LOOK the same inside and out but the internal parts are more cheaply made and much less durable. And I actually love Brother machines. I have two of them in fact, but both purchased from dealers.

@@ellenhofer3343 model numbers from one store to another are the same. However, most dealers only sell the upper end models whereas big box stores sell the lower end models. The big difference is price and naturally the cheaper ones are not going to contain better materials found in higher end models.
