I AM ATHLETE

Күн бұрын

In a special edition of I Am Athlete, We are celebrating Black History Month with our I Am Black Series, highlighting the everyday success of black men and women. In this episode, the guys sit down with former NFL All Pro Adewale Ogunleye who transitioned from football into becoming UBS's Head of Global Sports and Entertainment, the #1 Wealth Management Entity in the world.
Brandon, Fred and Channing come ready to take notes and ask questions about mistakes they have made and finding a different way to look at finances and long term investments. Wale said during his playing days, he realized that the failure of financial advisors to speak athletes' language was leaving many athletes and young people vulnerable to bad advice. After his playing days were finished, he invested in a future to help athletes and entertainers find a better way.
Wale tells Brandon and Fred that, "Money in families show flow from the top down, but when athletes make it, the problem is, it goes from them upward, which is where things get out of sorts," while Channing agrees it starts with how people are raised and the communities they are from.
In celebration of other black Chefs and entrepreneurs, Chef Nancie invites Shawn Williams, the owner of strictly wings and Magic Soul Food, who shares his story on how he started from the ground up spurring his love for cooking into owning 13 different restaurants. Shawn is very candid about his mission to prove people wrong when so many doubted that he wouldn't be able to succeed.

As a 37-year-old Latino just know that being aware of where you may feel deficient-financial advice, emotional advice-is the first step to improving, my dude. Then from there you’re able to start seeking out good sources of information and building your playbook as you look to improve your game. It’s a long road and it’s forever a work in progress. But just know that you being 17 and being hungry for better information is a helluva first step and the most important step. Much love to you. ✊

1. You need to be financially literate no matter your financial status. Be prepared for when you make it or your child etc... 2. Money is options. It gives you the ability to do whatever tf you want to do. Whether that's go on a family vacation or never work for "the man" again. No one likes rushing back from a vacation to wake up that Monday and go to work the following morning. 3. "Show me your friends, I'll show you your future." It's simple, no matter who it is, mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, never surround yourself with any who doesn't support you to the fullest, keep you moving in the right direction, or doesn't have your best interest at heart. Don't be so haste to call just anyone your friend. Being alone is EXTREMELY important to the individual growth of a person no matter the age.

That’s one thing that needs to change. Yes we need to help our family(the ones that raised us) yet we need to help them educate themselves and help them grow whatever little bit of money they have. Even if you give them $1000 each. You can help them grow that into something that they’ve never seen before!

Awesome dialogue. This is the dialogue that was given to me n siblings as we were growing up. As African Americans, this conversation never comes up in the house hold. For some of us it did. For the majority it didn't simply because parents had no knowledge about the relationship one needs to have with money no matter what level your on. As Fred stated, educate yourself. Take a basic class, take the opportunity when your community center offers it. Learn how to develop a relationship with money. I did! When I sit down with my financial advisor, I know the language! Don't allow these ppl out here continue to take your money!

Watching these brothers fight it out but still at the end of the day show each other respect, love, and support also helping young brothers and athletes financially and mentally. As a young black man I really appreciate this show and how I can see black men come together and actually care about each other and really want to see each other succeed in every way and how they treat black women and showing that our black women are very important and have a voice within society and in a relationship. So thanks to this show it inspired me to work harder and actually move with a different perspective about a lot of things

I've been talking to my black friends and family for years about what it's like to be black in America. It's good to see that the black community is starting to have a voice. My advice to any non-black person.. Listen and try to understand. We're in this together. Yes, all lives matter. But all lives don't matter until black lives matter too. And if you just listen, you'll find yourself understanding where the black community is coming from.. "We are first generation money" That statement has so much more meaning to it than you realize. Love this platform. Love this crew. Love this dialogue. Most importantly, I love you all.
