I have a 8.5 for tricks and a shaped board for crusing, i went up from 8.0 to 8.5 because 8 made me constantly feel like i was gonna roll my ankle because of how small the board is to land on my shaped board is 10.5 ish at the widest, and at the trucks it narrows to 9.0 (santa cruz winkowski), its actually a lot less heavy than i thought it would be, even with 60mm cruiser wheels, i can still pop ollies on it and thats all i really need to ask from it. the only issue i have is that the tail is so wide that (as a beginner) i cant tell if my foot is centered on it correctly for popping, but thats not really an issue with the width of the board, its moreso the fact the tail is square and not popsicle shaped

All those things are important BUT I feel wheelbase is more important than the others. It effects your ability to pop and flip your board. Another factor is being comfortable with speed which is needed on vert ramps and bowls. Smaller WB are good for technical skateboarding and bigger wheelbases are good for bowl and vert skateboarding.

Yeah and also when you are tall with long legs, a longer wb does help alot in general. When I was riding an 8" with a 14.125 wb, it felt like I was always on the nose with my front foot, because it was just too short. Now my sweet spot seems to be around 14.5 to 14.75 Although your trucks also matter. I once had an 8.5 with a 15" wb and with thunder trucks it was unskateable. But with ace af1 the shortened wb made it great. I think wb to overall length ratio is important too.

Good video Leon, you've come at a different angle compared to other videos on this topic. I'm 5'11 and wear size 12 shoes and ride my first set up board which is 8.25. When I first started a year ago my homie suggested I buy a 8.0 complete which I did, at one stage I was actually going to go down to a 7.5. I tried one at the skate shop and felt as if I would've broken my ankle on it, the staff member suggested I ride 8.25 as that's considered standard adult size. One of the homies at Lachlan's Line rides a 9.0, he let me ride it and it was like riding a surfboard. I found it too cumbersome, I could barely pop an ollie on it. I'm pretty happy with my 8.25, after watching this video I may experiment with an 8.38 in the future.

Good video on the widths alone but Wheelbase is as, if not more important than deck width, as someone else has stated. Even for beginners- You also have wheel size and type (conical, square, pros and cons to these also which everyone seems to overlook) you have the concave (mellow, deep, med) different trucks (hi, med, low, hollow, titanium which all effect weight and wheelbase in of themselves), then there’s bushings in each type of truck, you’ve inverted kingpins which effect grinding, round or oval noses and tails, tails and noses same shape and size plus probably more I’ve missed. Good video but there’s a LOT more to it which you figure out over years and years of trying different setups

Yeah dude, wheel base and length is definitely important too. Especially different branded trucks having a different truck geometry that could change the wheelbase as well! But for the sake of this video I kept it strictly about picking the right width board for you as a beginner since I didn't want to overwhelm them with the different intricacies of a skateboard set up and also as a beginner learning how to push, roll and balance, wheel base, deck and wheel shape isn't as crucial at this point so I will be working on videos addressing all of these points directly. I just got back into skating after taking an 18 year hiatus due to just adulting. Im about 210 lbs, 9.5 shoe depending on the company, my board is a 7.5. i prefer a smaller deck because it feels alot better to me than a bigger board. The 7.5 is going to be my street skate board, i do have another once i reach that stage to dropping into bowls that is an 8.5. On the street, skating the thinner board just makes me feel more connected with what im riding over and i have more balance. On the bigger board, i legit feel alot more wobbly and unstable when i start going faster. weird shit but my gods its awsome to skate again! OH and my street board is one ive dreamt of having ever since i played THPS2. The "bloody nose" board from zero. shits damn amazing to get used to skating again!

Welcome back 🥳 A lot of people that started skating in the 90's still prefer a smaller board like that since that is what they learnt on and was the style back then so it makes sense that that's the size you still feel comfortable on 👌🏼 Are your trucks loose on the 8.5" board? That could be why you feel a bit more unstable when you start going faster on that set up 🤔 That's so good to hear man! 🙌🏼

I'm < 6 foot, about 65 kg and ride a 8.125, although I'm considering changing to a 7.75 for something lighter. I mostly ollie up to 3 stairs (almost 4 now) and love 50-50 and board side grinds. Working on kickflips and pop shuvs etc in different stances to keep up in games of skate I play with friends. Can't decide between more space to land on the deck or making it as light as possible.

If you want something lighter you can also look at getting hollow truck, although they are more expensive, that way you still have a lot of board coverage and don't have to sacrifice going down a board size

Started on a 7.75" and I am now on a 8" twin-tail (love it BTW). My cruiser is 8.125" and I find going above 8.25" would be too much for me. Shoe size is 9 and height is average. Wheel size is 54mm. I'm still learning as I just started 2 years ago and been skateboarding on and off due to work and life stuff. Starting to land my first ollies while moving (they look ugly and I have some stuff to fix but it feels good) and can do kick turns and drop-in on small ramps and banks. I love going in bowls, just carving and going in slow as I learn to pump properly. I just do a couple of laps each time and I am not experienced enough to do full lines in bowls continuously. Guess what I am trying to say is that I am getting closer to a "jack of all trades" setup I'm comfortable with for riding mainly in parks, a bit in bowls and a bit on footpaths. Most important things for me there are wheel size, shape, duro and board width. I want something that will last, feels comfortable and light enough to do basic tricks.

I think the correct wheel base and length is more important than width tbh. An 8.5 with a longer wheel base feels way different compared to the safe size board with a short wheel base

i just got back into skating after a 20 year break. i remember in the 90's an 8" board was considered big. 7.75 is what i always rode. i just bought an 8" board and it did seem big at first but im getting used to it.

So I’ve been skating an 8.25(slappy st1 trucks) have a 13 shoe. I’m 29 and just got back into skating this summer. I made crazy progress in 4 sessions. Bs 180s and shoves, fs shoves, can Ollie onto a 10 in box, and I dropped in for my first time ever the other day. I push goofy and the last time my right foot fell off and rolled. I’ve been contemplating going up in size but I’m worried I’ll never do flip tricks if I do. Would it hurt my learning or is it a rider specific deal?

Oh dude that's sick, you're coming back strong! Not really dude, the board would obviously flip slower if it's bigger but having a size 13 foot, a bigger board would be a lot easier to land on for sure. It's definitely all rider specific though and it will take years to find what your perfect set up is for your body and style of skating

Fingers of flat between tail and bolt holes = 3 if tall, 2 norm, 1 short (be truthful about your height or you will get nailed more). Basically the actual bigger person = more fingers to flat and flatter tail as have the leverage and weight. If you are under 32 inch inseam you need a steeper tail and less fingers of flat. Further you need the room between your legs to flip board around so want a shorter board unless you like doing the splits and landing on your junk. The smaller the board you learn things on the more precise and better technique you will have. So if you want a trick on lock long term go small enough it challenges you. After you get one size/shape down try all to finesse things you missed because learning is the gap inbetween.

I’m new to skating at 35. Been a avid longboard rider for a long time. But tried a bunch of decks at my skate shop. Feel like the 7.87 felt pretty right but not sure might just go with a 8 yo try. I’m more about The flow then the tricks. My guess is it all comes down to the truck length and how it feels between your feet. Like snowboarding or longboarding it’s the feel of being in the pocket. Where you feel settled into the board. Obviously snowboards you can adjust bindings. Skating you can’t.

Yea I think a lot of my issues were the board was to small and wheels wouldnt roll. I probably just cruise. Shoe size 11 ( womens ) and 223, though working on losing. I was riding a 6 inch width board.

Size 11 shoes, always ridden a 7.75" because Rodney Mullen used to ride it. Problem was, it felt so narrow to land on that I never committed to landing a trick. Bought a 8.5" setup a few weeks ago and taking indoor skateboard lessons at age 38, I now feel like I can finally commit to landing on my board, hugely boosting my confidence. One question, I just ordered Spitfire conicals 54mm 99duro, do they slip out easily indoors or is the grip level just right?

Oh dude, that's good to hear! Yeah 8.5" will be a lot more comfortable for you for sure 👌🏼 They should be perfect for indoor skateparks, depending on how slippery the ramps and surface are. It's not until you ride a 101a that you will start to have problems with slipping out more on slippery surfaces

8.5 was too big for me, 8.25 too small. I found 8.38 is perfect for me. I wear a size 9/9.5 and am not a big person, so this is the perfect middle ground for me. Wide enough for comfort but still small enough to flip. If I could make my wheelbase shorter I would.

Going off of that I would say an 8.25" would be perfect for you! But saying that, you would need to ride a few different boards to see which one actually felt most comfortable to you and the way you want to skate since personal preference is sometimes more important.

6’5” tall, 11.5 shoes. I think the lowest I’m comfortable to go is probably 8.25”. Something like an 8” and I’d need to do stuff really clean every time. I think I could skate 8.25-8.75 comfortably as long as the wheel base isn’t too long. 14.5” is probably where I draw the line. Anything beyond that and the board feels so heavy.

@@LeonPaxton don’t get me wrong, I do feel more comfortable on longer wheel bases but I picked up a lot of boards with 14.25” wheel bases and have grown accustomed to skating them and when I step on a 14.5” wheel base I’m not as immediately comfy and my pop just feels sluggish. Currently it’s all wet all of the time and my rain/wet board is 14.25 and like 31.75 in length and I’m stuck riding that for a bit since it’ll most likely be like this for another month and a half at least. If it breaks though I have a 14.5” wheel base deck that I have ridden a bit that can take it’s place but there’s no point in ruining perfectly good decks unless I have to. But the plan is to get more accustomed to 14.5” and see if I can’t make that my new thing. I do like a longer board. These sub 32” decks just feel a little short at times. I can’t wait for more dry months to roll on so I can finally start to experiment a little again. I’ve had 10 sessions in the last 16 days and all of them have been wet ones. Going out later today when it’s hopefully not raining but it’ll still be wet.

My shoe size is 11.5, I want to get a cruiser type skateboard such as a landyachtz. I don't want to do any tricks on it just ride it. I'm too old for that. I have not ridden in many many years but I know how to. I read that you don't want to go more than 0.75 inches off the board on both sides, so this would put me at a 10inch wide board which sounds too big. Nah dude, those measurements don't make sense at all. It's definitely personal preference and what feel most comfortable to you! There is no equation that helps determine what size board you should be riding. You might just have to hop on a few different sizes to feel what is best for you but it might take some time

It takes a few boards to actually find your size. You should be able to skate at speed comfortably and turn. 8.5 is a good starting size. Move up or down a size from there.

@@LeonPaxton It's just that the next size down on trucks from 8in axle is 7.6 and that's just not enough truck for me. I would rather have the trucks slightly smaller than the board but an 8in deck causes me to lose a lot of tricks so I've always just settled for my usual set up. The wheels don't usually reach the very end of any size axle so the wheels are pretty much flush with deck only the axle protrudes .125 - .2 if that makes sense. Basically if you measure from outside of wheel to outside of wheel instead of end of 8in axle the wheel to wheel it's about 7.8 - 7.875 or even 7.91

Things have changed from the turn of the millenium. 7.5” was for tech stuff 7.75” was normal 8” was wide and 8.5” was for vert. I started skating vert on a 7.5 because i couldn’t piece together a 8.5” board. 😂 It took me like 6 months to get all the parts. And my shoe size is 14 so, yeah…

Getting trucks that match your deck width usual helps or even a size that sits slightly under. And then I would say anywhere from a 52mm to 54mm wheel 👌🏼

Either way will be fine man, trucks a little bit bigger than your board will definitely create more stability but staying within a quarter inch bigger or smaller than your deck will be fine 👌🏼

Leon I agree, yes, shorter wb affects how light the board is, but thats very minor if yo could add the trucks that make wb smaller, to give more leverage, the trucks that are opposite of thunders and ventures. My ace classics are way heavyer than my thunder hollows, but make the pop of 8.5 way lighter. So a heavy setup with light pop-feel is also possible and its really good because it does not let the board bounce away from your feet at the moment of catch. Just something to consider.

@@LeonPaxton In case you should try Ace Classics, just to warn you, bushing are too soft and even Ace Hard bushings are too soft (I'm just 73kg) and blew them by overtightening. So I had to but 100 hard Minilogo top bushings to find my tightness work for these trucks. + these trucks make crooked grinds a bit harder to achive due to that massive lean back of hanger. But I don't know any other truck that give that much leverage, because making wheelbase the most short (of any trucks I know.)

freestyle skating has it's own boards entirely. look it up. or just get something on the smaller wnd like 8ish. unless you have big t/ are very tall then you just need a bigger board

I used to skate 8.5 - 9 then tired a 8.1 no different. It’s a skateboard we all can adjust to different size boards. Skating completely different sizes is fun .
