I have a doubt Ddr5 dual channel 2*16 costs double the two single 16 ddr5 sticks. But my laptop dell g15 5520 supports dual channel ram. Should I buy two single sticks of 16 ddr5 ram or buy dual channel kit of 32gb (16+16). What's the difference? Doesn't the two single sticks work in dual channel?

If you purchase 2 of the same sticks you will be able to use them in dual channel still. However, the ones sold as a kit have been validated to work together hence the slightly higher price, they also would come from the same batch, as if you bought 2 individual ones its possible that they are Technically different despite being the Same SKU

Okay so please help me out as I am learning. I have 2 ddr4 3200mhz T Force VulcanZ. When I put them in 1 and 2 the computer doesn’t work, 1 and 3 doesn’t work but if I go 2 and 4 it works. Its funny bc when i had my first pc built, i had a friend and one of his friends to put it together since i didnt know what i was doing other than the extensive pc building videos and reddit questions i needed answered. Depending on the board, it will either work completely fine, not work at all, or take longer to post. This is cause the sequence that the board checks the memory before booting is channel 1 (slots 2 and 4) then channel 2 (slots 1 and 3) for best compatibility following the manaufactures recommendations which with be in the manual, or sometimes screen printed onto the motherboard next to the RAM slots

That would probably be best! 2 and 4 are the recommended slots. If you are still stuck in a boot loop I would also suggest trying to clear your cmos, this might help!

You won't be running in dual channel mode, so you will effectively half the bandwidth. Much better to run in dual channel mode to get the most out of your RAM!

If its just 1 stick you should be fine, however motherboards do have preferences, so it can take longer to boot up Always best to check the manual to see what it suggests

While not ideal, it's not the biggest issue. If any of them match keep those 2 in the same channel, slots 2 and 4 would probably be best for those.

Its possible that the RAM you've chosen is not compatible, or Is faulty. I would try clearing your CMOS and try using one stick and a time. If it works with one and not the other its time to make a warranty claim!

There are still alot of issues with DDR5 running in quad channel. Keep in mind this is still new technology at this stage and all the kinks aren't refined. You might need to drop your RAM speed down in the bios. It might also be worth running a bios update to the latest bios. I would also run Memtest off a USB to see if maybe the RAM is actually faulty. Do you know what blue screen error youre getting?

There is no meaningful performance difference between the 2 options, however going for 2x 16 gives you the option to upgrade further to 64GB down the line if you needed

From my understanding you would still get the Full ram capacity, and full speed for your ram, as normal. However placing them in this order would make it so your CPU can connect/interact better with them. or well more effeciently. That is what i learned about it.

Sounds like you might be using ddr3 with that speed? However if you have 2x 32 it should be saying 64 gb total, I would try running them one by one

It sounds like you might have a broken motherboard, or possibly CPU. If its still under warranty I would take them back to the place of purchase and see if you can RMA the item

If the board has 4 slots, then this is fine. The slots will usally be colour coded as to what channels they share. The first and third will be one channel, and the second and fourth will be another. So all together, you will have 16gb of RAM with 8gb in each channel

If the slot is broken, I would do slot 1 and 3, however if the motherboard is still under warranty I would try to get a repair done by the manufacturer on the broken slot first!

Sounds like there might be an issue else where! If possible, I would clear my CMOS. Then try some different RAM. If there is still an issue with the other RAM It might be a motherboard issue, perhaps slot 2 is dead? Doesn't sound like CPU cause if there was a dead memory channel on that, you would be stuck with 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 as those share channels. If its working for now I wouldn't worry to much unless you start running into other issues. Let me know how you go!

It won't short anything or break anything, but you are leaving performance on the table when you put them in slots 2 and 4 they will be used in dual channel mode giving you a performance boost currently they will only be running in single channel mode

If your 4th slot is faulty, 1 and 3 won't be a huge issue, However, if your board is still under warranty, I would suggest seeing if you can RMA your board and get it repaired or swapped over!

It might be worth resetting your CMOS, there should be some pins on your motherboard near the battery labled "JBAT1" or somthing similar. That you can short. Otherwise try reseating your RAM and GPU, make sure all power cables are plugged in correctly. Sometimes it can take a motherboard a couple of minutes to figure out the correct settings it needs, so you might need to leave it sitting for a little after turning it on to get a proper post. Let me know how you go!

If you haven’t fixed this already… I made this same mistake with the POST but nothing else turning on. You have to make sure the RAM is completely in until you hear a CLICK. Even if you have to put pressure on it a little.

Does the speed and timings perfectly match? Mixing and matching can cause issues, I would try to get 2 matching kits if possible

You could be sacrificing performance. RAM kits that come with 2 sticks like to work in dual channel mode. In order to do this you need to make sure they are installed in the correct slots for each RAM channel. If you run in single channel vs dual channel you can see drops in overall speed of processes and well as in your games FPS!

Slots 1 and 3 are a shared channel so it should be ok. However most motherboards prioritise slots 2 and 4 first, check your mobo manual to see what it recommends. Usally in this situation i would swap to 2 and 4.
