I'm looking to my viewers to answer the question what Smartwatch can beat or replace the Pebble. I'm talking specifically about Smartwatches. Not fitness trackers, not exercise tools, etc. I'm talking about an everyday assistant that:
- makes it easier to get through the day
- makes it easy to communicate
- no power or battery worries
- always easy to see and interact with
- and does it all with grace, and perhaps even a bit of fun.
I don't care about heart rate tracking, afib, O2 tracking, reminder to get up and walk, or anything having to do with exercising - because when I DO exercise, I put on an exercise shirt, running shoes, and a fitness tracker with GPS and heartrate monitoring so I can stay in my zone, while exercising, and know where I ran, and how fast I ran each mine. I use a fitness device when I'm exercising.
The rest of the time, I want a Smartwatch that makes it super easy to do what I want to do - through intuitiveness, ease of use, customizability, and, dare I even say it, a bit of fun. Watching my Pebble charge with the icons of a coffee cup being makes me smile, because it's funny.
Absolute requirement, at least a week of battery, and an always on display that doesn't shine all night, and is readable in direct sunlight. Vibrations I can actually feel and use as a morning alarm. Tactile buttons I can use to do simple, everyday tasks without forcing me to stare at the screen.
What do you think can beat The Pebble? (if anything)
Let me know.

I think this video best captured my sentiments about the Pebble. It's a smart watch first and foremost. It complements my smart phone in that, I can do certain things faster on my Pebble than whipping out my phone to do the same. The Pebble is unassuming. Other "smart" watches just try so hard to do and be everything. Aside from being pretentious, they all ultimately end up with terrible functionality and UI. I supported the first Pebble, had the Steel, then Pebble Time, and now, I am still wearing my Pebble Time Steel. Battery life is a measly 4-5 days but I'll probably run this to the ground before retiring it. Nothing comes close to Pebble in terms of utility. Maybe because I'm a nerd but to me, Pebble is still the true smart watch.

Finally, a video talking about all I think about Pebble! My Pebble Time Steel died few months ago, and I'm so lost ever since that day! I've been searching for a alternative, but after all this time, no one was able to make a watch as good as Pebble did... I've noticed two watches that could be a substitute, but there are always some down sides compared to the Pebble. -The Fitbit Versa 3 : But no eink, allways on display, and a touch screen (which I don't like compare to the physical buttons navigation of the Pebble) -And the Fossil Hybrid hr (gen6) but I liked the digital display and it's customisation, the navigation was also a lot better with pebble (the shortcuts, for all the four buttons! That was so intuitive) and messages replies are not available!!! Of course I'm not even talkin about 300€ or more watches or the ones with not even 24h of battery life... Anyway, I'm sad, but kind of relieved to see that I'm not alone. I really hope that someone is going to take back all this good ingredients that made pebble time what it was, and make the perfect watch reborn from it's ashes. I wish I never knew Pebble.

Still using my old Pebble Time Steel as my daily driver as well. To be honest, I quite haven't found, after all this time (and I've been looking) a proper substitute for it. I still can't believe no one actually made something like it after all this time. Although I've seen some good watches from Garmin (my son and my wife both use Garmin watches) and they both get decent battery life out of them, and they covers the basic stuff well (although not as elegantly and as simple as the Pebble do). I've seen the Fitbit ones, they're not that great. Well, they're "ok", but they're more like "fitness trackers" first, smartwatch second. Might be good if that's you're after (I'm not). And battery life isn't stellar. Samsung ones are a joke. I mean, a day (or two, max) of battery? That's just plain horrible for me. Especially for its price, which I find relatively insulting. I had a look at all those Chinese brands as well, and while some of them seem to be decent, they often fail when it comes to the UI (and good luck with the warranty if it breaks, lol!). Truth is, the Pebble was, and still is, unique. It was the only smartwatch that understood the "watch" concept. The idea of it being a basic assistant, or a companion, to your phone, and not a device trying to replace it was what made it great. If mine eventually dies, I feel like getting anything else will be a downgrade. It just works for everything I want out of a smartwatch, and every other watch out there has one thing or more than makes me scratch it off the list of potential replacement. Like I said, some Garmin models are decent, although they lack quite a bit in the apps and clock faces department. Probably would go with something from them the day my Pebble stops working (I just hope it isn't anytime soon).

The thing with the Pebble watches were, that they were sufficient for many people. And I am with you that I want a watch that displays messages and appointments, have a ton of different watch faces and look good. I want a watch that I won't need to tap to wake up or that flashes in my face at night. It doesn't need a touch display or an unintuitive OS. It should just support my daily activities. That self-improvement and measuring is crap - It won't help people getting healthier. I have two Pebble Steel - And I will not part with them unless I won't get any replacement parts.

The only one I found for my usage (showing the time with an always on display, showing messages, having a long battery life) was the Amazfit BIP/BIP S. It's not "e-Ink". Even Pebble die-hards keep saying this. "Sharp Memory LCD" Thanks for making this video though. Nothing compares (STILL!) to Pebble watches. I do find it funny that you have Pebble Time Round smartwatches because they have nowhere near long enough battery. The Pebble 2 SE (which isn't in your video) is my favorite. Sure, the buttons can fail after (for me) 2.5 years, but I've always worn it while in the shower and pool for that entire time with no issues. I'm on my second P2SE, and have a new P2HR as a spare.

I know, but there's a much wider understanding of "e-ink" and how it enables long battery life through the widespread use of Kindle readers. If I said the screen was Sharp Memory LCD 99.9% of the audience would be like, what? huh? So it's just easier parlance to relate it to a screen technology that they're aware of, and which offers similar advantages- for the sake of describing it.

Thanks so much for this video, you really describe what I also appreciated on my old Pebble Steel which unfortunately stopped working reliably (screen tearing issues, weak battery). I just replaced it with a Garmin fenix 6S Pro, which I think is one of the very few worthy alternatives. It can do everything my Pebble could do while lasting about 10 days, plus a lot more fitness-related stuff which I almost never use. I appreciate the always-on reflective screen, the rather small size and the button operation. However, the basic things are often a bit less straightforward. For example, seeing my agenda needs 2 clicks compared to one, setting the watch to silent takes one click-and-hold, a glance and another click, compared to one click-and-hold on the Pebble. A really great addition however is the dedicated light button which lets you turn the backlight on and off without doing any other action. Also, while being reasonably small, it's still chunkier. The screen however is a lot better, more sharp, text is twice the size while fitting the same amount of text (I had my Pebble set to the smallest font size). Notification synchronization and quick replies work as good as on the Pebble, but there's no microphone. Setting alarms also work, and there's an app which syncs Google Maps navigation to my wrist, but I found this not to work all the time. There are more apps and watchfaces available in the store, a lot of them are also free. Watchfaces are also mostly pretty customizable. All in all, I think Garmin is currently the only company which offers decent Pebble replacement watches. I would recommend the Forerunner 245 if you want the smallest, best value option with 3rd party apps from them. If you want something a bit more classy, there's the fenix line, which I think the 6S is the best value option. The fenix 7S is the newest one which adds a touch screen, but it's very expensive right now. The 5S Plus or the 5S are older ones to consider buying used, but I'd rather go for the Forerunner 245 then, because the 5S line is quite thick still. I got a very good deal for a refurbished fenix 6S Pro on Amazon. Here's my German review if anyone is interested: www.amazon.de/gp/customer-reviews/R1JPC0GRR2LFAS

Thanks for the in-depth reply. I appreciate your insight and experiences in trying to find a suitable replacement for the pebble. @@IEBATechThoughts That's so true! In addition, a lot of people think they also need an AMOLED screen and touch operation. As Pebble users, we know about the advantages of low-power sunlight-visible always-on displays, full-button operation and long battery life. And those are things professional athletes need as well, to operate their watches with sweaty hands when running and not having the battery run out of juice while using GPS on a long activity session. That's what makes those things decent Pebble alternatives. However, I would rather leave all the fitness stuff out to get a slimmer watch and have an operation tailored more towards everyday use. If Eric would revive Pebble, I would sell my Garmin and get one for sure!

Hi! Thanks for sharing this video, I've used every iteration of pebble except the round and it was SO GOOD for the era, cost and function. The newest version before closing had HR and voice to text function which was amazing. Battery life amazing. If you look at newer processor wear OS (fossil gen 6, ticwatch e3 or ticwatch pro 3), you'll have longevity on wear OS updates AND You could probably push battery out multiple days if health tracking isn't an interest and turn those sensors off. EITHER WAY I FULLY AGREE. Nothing can beat what pebble was and what it was trying to do. Closest I have come to being happy with FUNCTION. Is the mobvoi E3 and pro 3 ultra. The pro 3 range has a dual screen display so there's an always on LCD.... Might be worth a look at.

The best part of the Pebble was the timeline UI and the notifications, especially notification history. WearOS is cumbersome and Samsung is downright weird with notifications, neither has history and both sync with your phone's notifications, so a careless swipe dismisses the notification to the /dev/null and you will never know what was in it. I never cared for the fitness features and I am quite angry that Apple basically made everyone turn the Smartwatches into glorified fitness trackes. We've had a perfectly fine device category for that: actual fitness trackers! Now every smartwatch tracks 700+ types of activity nobody cares for, but you have to hunt down an in-depth review video to find a single frame at 39:11 to see how it handles notifications. Or does it have a multi-timer (Samsung just recently added a few months ago, yet Pebble had it for a decade, it's not such a wild concept for a _watch_ FGS)? Anyways, thanks for the video. I still have a PTS I use from time to time, a PT my mom uses, an OG Kickstarter edition, glued shut with a bad display, and my GF had a Round, but it never held a charge for more than 4 days even when new.

I ordered the Withings Scanwatch 2 but hey guess what - NO QUICK REPLY ?! Wtf? It should be a default feature on every SW! I think Garmin gets pretty close though and as you've mentioned the Fossil-brand but that is difficult to get hands on here in Europe. Pebbles OS is unbeaten without a doubt but physically I would've loved a new model that has a brighter color-display, round and bigger and if possible wireless charging. In theory it would be so easy to simply keep OS and just make few updates in hardware... Oh well, awesome video 👍

Amazfit Bip 2 is a good model to test. Regarding Garmin, any modern model with music support will be a good contender for any pebble, Venu SQ is a more sleek design but less battery (6 days) , Forerunners are usually better (2 weeks battery life), so 245, 645, 945, and even Vivoactive 4 would fit the bill. Pebble time steel. I already have a pebble time. I just love my pebble, I also miss my pebble; it suddenly stops taking charge and now it’s dead.

Just dug up my Pebble Time Steel Kickstarter edition. Still has a great battery life, very sad there's no real competitor. Nobody makes a good non touchscreen smartwatch! The Mi band 6 has just as accurate and faster step detection as the Pebble, longer battery, pretty cheap display, quality heart rate monitoring. What breaks it for me is the touch screen. Forget about leaving it on in the shower or the rain, it is utterly useless there!

Plus, without dedicated buttons, you can't fire off a quick, preset text message in 5 taps, without ever taking you eyes off the road.

A Pebble 2 review and lunch now would destroy every thing else... But I think that shit bit, sorry, fitbit, holds all patents for pebble😢 so i guess no future there

Agreed - it's still so far ahead, and imagine if it was made with TODAY's chips, it'd do even more, or last even longer. And give me an even bigger Time screen to the outer edges. Doable with backing. But Google bought out FitBit and has really done nothing with it. The original Pebble inventor has said he's learned from what went wrong and I say - oh ,yea? Prove it, bring Pebble back. :)

If you go back to candy-bar cell phones, with multi-day life- their battery as bigger than current smartwatches. Cellular connectivity, even with cell phone-sized antennas takes power. Now do it with tiny antennas in a watch-sized design and you compromise connectivity, and need more power to try and reach the same tower. There's not going to be a watch that = phone connectivity until there are way more towers. Meaning that the cellular connectivity is much easier, with lower power, meaning that the battery can be the tiny gumdrop that fits in the available space in a watch. The larger Apple watch currently has a 308 mAh battery. The Sony Walkman candybar phone battery was over 900 mAh to give you several days of use with a tiny LCD screen. www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Watch+Series+6+Teardown/136694
