Former speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop has questioned Defence Minister Richard Marles’ actions with defence expenditure says Australia is now entering its most “dangerous time”.
Ms Bishop joined Sky News host Paul Murray to discuss defence expenditure.
“We’re going to put all this money into us because China’s a bad guy.
“But guess what? We’re not going to put … 90 per cent of the money in until way past forward estimates when they’d be out of office hopefully for a long time.
“In the meantime they’ve cut $72 billion of already allocated spending, what sort of Defence Minister is this?”

The defence portfolio might be the most talk over by politicians but it is the least understood and taken care of. In the span of what was my service between 94 to 2012 there was Liberal and Labour, if I go by the old saying of "the lesser of two evils" liberal was slightly better. However, for the past 20 odd years Australia was committed to a war in the middle east along with continued peacekeeping operations closer to our shores in Timor and Solomon Islands. Our defence ministers and ADF got accustomed to deploying our ADF to places they knew when to, have a duration of a deployment, safe logistical frameworks and resupply and be part of a larger coalition of forces who we were integrated with and could rely on for support. We were always taught Complacency is a death sentence and that's something the government got settled down into I would say since post WWII. Nothing grew gradually in fact many things were ripped apart, budgets were taken away from places in a bid to ramp up on others only for them to be changed again. Higher leadership in the ADF became complacent in dealing with the civilian element of ministers and communication between both has been nothing more than nodding at one another and then going off and doing their own thing. Now we all think we're playing catch up? I believe the government has been called out and due to the mess we have had for decades and the simple fact we have a party far worse than the other in to deal with it the defence force is going to be in a massive hurt locker for sure.
