What SpaceX just Did with Falcon Heavy is Unusual...
SpaceX is gearing up for something extraordinary with one of its rockets.
I know what you’re thinking.
But no, I’m not referring to Starship-though Starship V2 is certainly stealing the spotlight right now.
Let’s not forget that SpaceX has another formidable powerhouse in its arsenal: the Falcon Heavy.
And now, SpaceX has an exciting upgrade planned for this vehicle, one that promises to elevate its already impressive capabilities to new heights.
What exactly is this upgrade?
Let’s dive right in and find out!
What SpaceX just Did with Falcon Heavy is Unusual...
The Falcon Heavy, SpaceX’s powerful super heavy-lift launch vehicle, exemplifies cutting-edge engineering and partial reusability, designed to carry payloads into Earth’s orbit and beyond. This impressive rocket builds upon the proven design of the Falcon 9, incorporating three Falcon 9 first stages as its core. With enhanced structural reinforcements, Falcon Heavy stands 70 meters tall and generates over 5.1 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. Typically, it utilizes the same second stage and payload fairing as the Falcon 9, but an updated extended payload fairing has been developed for specialized missions.
What SpaceX just Did with Falcon Heavy is Unusual...
What sets this version apart from the standard fairing? The most notable difference is its increased size. The extended payload fairing maintains nearly the same diameter as the standard version but adds 17 additional feet in height, creating more room to accommodate larger payloads. This expansion boosts Falcon Heavy’s versatility and allows it to support missions requiring physically larger payloads. However, the changes go beyond mere dimensions.

Good Moring, Kev. Maybe a bigger fairing would allow Sierra Space house DreamChaser. What do you think? Thank You Very much for including Miles with Kilometers. I no longer have to stop in the middle of the episode and convert. It means a lot. That Close to finishing the rover was a mistake. That's peanuts compared to the cost overruns NASA had spent on Boeings Starliner. They didn't think anything of it spending money on that white elephant. Finish the project... "Bring it back." Why cant they increase the diameter of payload fairing in expandable mode of Super Heavy. This way it can deploy larger payloads until Starship is fully operational?
@PinoAstro
@PinoAstro 7 күн бұрын
From my understanding, Falcon was designed to be transported via road, so it could assembled in a different spot than the launch site. Roads limit the maximum diameter, and I think they've already made it the largest diameter possible. In addition, there are likely aerodynamic considerations for a fairing that is much wider than the rest of the rocket.
@jackf.7415

FH and F9 use the same size payload fairing at 5 meters. BO now has NG with a larger diameter fairing( 7 meter) and ULA has Vulcan (5.4 meter) to fill the niche. Soon Sx will have Starship. Generally speaking, most payloads will fit in a F9 sized fairing. Many times it launches below its max capacity as payloads are usually smaller and lighter rather the larger and heavier. Kinda like driving a semi tractor trailer to Home Depot to pick up a box of nails. This is why Falcon Heavy has only flown 6 times since its first flight in 2018, and Delta 4 heavy having flown a total of 16 missions between 2004 and 2018.

Falcon Heavy could easily be made into Falcon Super Heavy by putting 4 - 5 Falcon boosters around a central core. We're talking something intermediate between Falcon Heavy and Starship. Falcon Super Heavy would be a great workhorse for getting to the planets.
@stormyridgegirl5229
@stormyridgegirl5229 8 күн бұрын
Yes, it would have been fun, but they would have needed to add more framing around the core. 2 boosters become RLTS, and 2 recovered at sea. A lot of mass to the moon or mars with no refuel needed: To Mars: ~25,000-30,000 kg (55,000-66,000 lbs) , To the Moon: ~30,000-35,000 kg (66,000-77,000 lbs) - DeepSeek calc - which is about 50-60% more that FH.

You’ve pretty much just equaled Super heavy booster power without the same level of reusability. Even though Falcon is reusable after a lot of refurbishment it wouldn’t be as reusable as a super heavy booster which won’t require refurbishment. I think someone else mentioned an expendable Starship as an interim awaiting full Starship reusability.

I don't think that is easy. If I had to do it with them, I might do 6 total, add one junction to the core... but putting a mini starship on top could be cool. I also want to see a third stage on starship, where the starship pushes hard and lands in africa or indian ocean, and then third stage is disposable. or a second stage that is disposable and a keep starship as the 3rd stage.

VIPER MUST stay on the shelf, or better yet, be prominently displayed with a sign as to why it was canceled. NASA contractors have for way to long been rewarded for being behind schedule and over budget. Even though courts frown upon liquidating damages clauses in contracts, they do accept that they lead to more efficient contracts with better performance. It is my opinion that virtually all government contracts should have carefully written liquidating damage clauses for under performing or failing to meet schedules. Arguably, this will drive up contract cost as part of a "risk premium." However, we no longer live in a world where there are only 3-5 big legacy aerospace companies capable of fulfilling a contract. Companies like SpaceX have ushered in a new era of market competition in the space industry. Incentives for exceeding minimum expectations, standards, or schedules could be offered but would not be necessary in most cases. "Milking the job" for every penny at taxpayer expense is no longer fashionable. Especially when failing to meet the standard or deadline for additional cost.

This fairing upgrade has been planned from the start of Falcon Heavy's inception, but the focus on Starship with ultimate fairing size, the ship itself, must have delayed those plans. Only the military would need it, at the moment, so it is special use that might come to use for special NASA launches. It all comes down to opportunity and cost savings; the means of transportation, are variable. The criteria the USSF needs is first; how quick can the rocket be ready, is it a proven rocket, and how much cheaper is it to other means to orbit.

The larger payload fairing is GREAT NEWS for SpaceX. This new fairing will give SpaceX customers much-needed assurances that SpaceX will REALLY soon be able to accommodate significantly larger Falcon heavy payloads. The best part of this news is that it is more evidence that SpaceX engineers are returning to pragmatic engineering practices and REAL, CONCRETE schedules and cost estimates that their customers can actually rely on. This is another important step - like the new separate Starship 2nd stage catch tower - that shows that SpaceX engineers are freeing themselves from the horrendously stupid ideas of CyberTruck Turd Boy, aka FSD Fraudster, aka TeslaBot Smoke and Mirrors Man, aka Twitter Disaster Dipshit, aka NeuralLink Monkey Killer, aka HyperLoop Abject Failure, aka xAI Too Late Loser, aka DOGE Douche Bag, aka Mars Colony Fairytale Teller, aka Elon the Nazi Worshipper. The biggest danger for SpaceX is that Elon will return to fire the competent Falcon 9/Falcon Heavy SpaceX engineers in favor of YES men so that he can take ALL the credit for this new SpaceX direction and then promptly guide SpaceX back into the same ditch that has caused Starship development to slip its schedules by years.
