A video gushing about a cool thing Splatoon does which is a lot like a cool thing Undertale does. There's a lot more games that do this, Undertale and Splatoon are just two particular instances where I feel it works well.

Another bit of information is that according to Splatoon 2 lore, Turf Wars started 2 years from when you play in Splatoon 2. Which mans they were a completely new thing in the original Splatoon, which explains why some of the weapons seem pretty unbalanced in retrospect(Seriously Kraken!), and they even explain the brand new specials in universe, as more regulations developed for the specials, they had to be changed to meet these regulations. It's just interesting how much detail is put into explaining things.

while there's a lot of information given about the octarians in the sunken scrolls, here's something from an interview. "The interviewer asked if Marina is an Octoling, but they all dodged the question and Nogami simply said, “She has extraordinary hair”. Nogami also noted that Inklings are not paying attention to this too much. Inoue said that the Inklings don’t care about appearances if they are doing something fresh."

@@nup5 splatoon was also remembered because it was unique and not just a sequel or spin-off of an already existing title. That was the main mindset of the game and why I liked it so much. Both games have good worldbuilding and incorparate their mechanics into the gameplay. But to say the truth, that is where the simelarety end allready. Undertale, for once, uses its mechanics as a plotpoint and the driving force behind your progression. It uses the tools of Exp and Lv not as intended, but uts them on a pedestal, for all to see. The literal first dialog of the game explains you that the world is aware of the statistical measured Exp and Lv, it tells you to collect/avoid sayed points and that it has a major impact on the way the story progresses. The Mechanic IS the plot. Splatoon, on the other hand, uses the mechanics as they are intended to use: Experience and Level are a statistical measurement for how good you did, measured by a system that you use for the Turf-Wars, wich are Sport-Events. The shopkeepers (who live from selling their stuff to not only you, but ALL players) have a good eye for how how experienced you are. They probably can look up your ranking the same way you can do, by looking at some screen. The world is consistend, but the Plot is not driven by your xperience, but the experience is a sideefect from the plot and a tool you can use to progress. Non of the two approchaes is better then the other. But i feel that 'Consistend World' is kinda a week point for justifing a compearison. The games are hardly compearable at all. RPG-FPS; Offline-Online; Choices-Competition. They work on compleatly diffrent ideas and have diffrent goals reached by diffrent means. The one thing i have to agree on, trougth, are that both are good games. (Fan- and Hatedoms not included.)

In regards to the Undertale fandom, I just say that people should do whatever they like or whatever brings them joy (as long as it is not mean-spirited or harmful) because they are just expressing themselves. Sure they might do questionable things and draw really unpleasant art but it just makes them happy. Also don't judge a game based on the people surronding it. Unless it is an online shooter or a online competitive game which has communication or something like that, then the people in the fandom actually affect your experience. In other cases, a community is just there.

You know, I kinda wish Toontown Online took the "Everything is canon" approach. As an MMO, an NPC can state any part of his quest dialog at any time. This can result in situations such as... Toon 1 enters NPC: Oh, you got me that doodad I needed to make my ship! Now I can go on my voyage. Toon 2 enters, with toon 1 still present: Npc: Oh hey! I need a doodad to make my ship, to go on a voyage to find out where the Cogs are coming from!

Ikr, People rate games by their fanbase, some of the fanbase is good but most of it... not so much, if i had one wish it would be to get rid of bad fanbase, I like Undertale because it's a fun game with good soundtrack and some humour that will make you laugh once or twice, The bosses won't be extremely hard unless you do genocide, with the two hardest bosses, but even then if you beat them once or twice like undyne, It is easier, like my second genocide run i beat them on my second try and third i beat them first try, anyway it's a fun game with multiple endings most of them from neutral.

Freeze Burn you should play the other three, they’re much better than sticker star and color splash. Super paper Mario’s bosses can’t be replayed, but there’s the sammer guy challenge(where you fight 100 mini bosses in a row) the flip side pit of trials(where you fight your way through 100 rooms to reach a really tough boss with a good reward) and the flopside pit of trials(where you fight through 100 rooms TWICE to reach another boss) and they all have good rewards for completing them

This really is a nice little food for thought! This actually made me think about Deltarune too--that game's file is called "SURVEY_PROGRAM", so any shortcuts you make in the start menu or some such will be called "SURVEY_PROGRAM.exe" by default. And it's also interesting how all of the files had that all-caps thing going, and the 'survey program' one has that distinct underscore--really leans into the programmer aesthetic! Maybe toby fox wanted to lean into the 'this is a program on a computer' aspect of his second game? cool discussion to be had! :)

For all of you who are bashing on undertale, it isn’t cancer or bad or any of that. Undertale is a good game. The thing that you hate isn’t the game, but the toxic parts of the fan base surrounding it. Undertale is comparable to a pufferfish. In order to reach the nice, delicious flesh and gain the experience, you must first have it prepared by a professional. In this case, the professional is you playing the game, but if you consume the wrong part it can be fatal. The game is the good part. The fans are the poisonous bits surrounding it. Learn the difference before you attack a game for being cancer even though it isn’t.

Huh, I never noticed that. I love when games do that, because when they don't, some mechanics just feel as if the developers didn't know how it would make sense in the game, and just went "eh, whatever". So when games like Undertale and Splatoon make a canon reason for everything, it really makes the game feel like its own world, sometimes when I play Undertale (and I'm sure that'll be the case with Splatoon now) I just forget it's actually a game that was planned, coded, and everything, and it just feels like a world. I actually wanna be a gamedev eventually, and I'll definitely try to incorporate something like this when I try making my own game.

Thats pretty neat and all! But I don't think Undertale invented self aware/canon choice games, I really don't see why that connection had to be made between Splatoon and Undertale only? It would've been just as easy to say that "Hey! Splatoon, Undertale, and other games are self aware!" And the same point can be made. Otherwise, great observation!

I think both Octo Expansion's escape sequence and the final boss in S3 add exceptions for this, but I think my favourite part about this approach is S2 and 3 framing the hoard mode as a shitty part time job (and then ties it into the S3 story mode)

Wow. A lot of unnecessary hate for UnderTale in the comments. Seriously, there's nothing wrong with talking about the game. Yeah it's not the greatest game in the world yeah it's a small indie game, yeah it's got a weird and uncanny fan base, but it's a good game. If you don't like it, that's fine, just don't go spreading unnecessary hate. Besides, if you guys really hate it enough to create angry comments, then why'd you click the video in the first place. You guys are more annoying than anyone I've seen in the fanbase. Just go find a video that won't trigger you.
