It's time for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home! The reunited crew of the Enterprise travel back in time to THE PRESENT to find a pair of whales in this, the actual best Star Trek movie so far. Probably.
Join us on a time travel adventure full of insanely quotable lines, environmental anxiety, and all the sound and colour of 1986. Is Rob a Star Trek fan yet? Let's find out…

Absolutely love these! As a medium Star Trek fan, it's great to hear all the perspectives. Are you going through all of the films? Realised lots of epsiodes released all ready.

I can report from the future that we did indeed finish all the Star Trek films! The podcast episodes are up already wherever you listen to podcasts (not, like, in your bath, but on apps and that) and we'll be releasing one a day here until we catch up with the weekly releases. Which will happen... some time in October.

FYI In later shows (DS9 & VOY specifically) we learn that Starfleet winds up creating a Temporal Prime Directive thanks to how many times Kirk & Co have recklessly time traveled and affected the timeline. Eventually it all leads to Starfleet protecting time as well as space in the midst of a Temporal Cold War in the far off more distant future. It all becomes a major plot point in the development of an entire Trek spinoff: Enterprise.

The original cut out reasoning for Saavik staying behind on Vulcan was that she was pregnant with Spock’s child from having Pon Farr in Search for Spock. They ultimately decided against it but there’s nothing in this film that contradicts that notion. In other words just wait a few years and new Trek will retcon “Spock’s child” into a character/plot point for a desperate nostalgia play. 😜

To flex my pedant Trek nerd muscles: the Enterprise A is commissioned so fast because it’s just a new ship that was renamed Enterprise in honor of Kirk and crew. The original name was Yorktown. As the franchise deepened you’d start to see this done a number of times. Star Trek Picard has a similar set up. 🖖🏾

The memory episode with Riker was due to a writer strike iirc. 😂 It's the only TNG episode I skipped.

This entire podcast is fascinating because most people don’t make the films their entry point to the franchise even though it was the Trek gateway drug for a lot of fans. I actually think that after listening to your preferences you guys would love many of the Star Trek spin off shows even more than the films. You guys have blind spots that are right up your alley and taste when it comes to the questions you are asking.

Loving these episodes…. However this one ended abruptly without the typical outro and Rob’s Warp rating ? 🤷‍♂️

it had the warp rating and look forward to FInal Frontier too for me. 1:20 long in total. Does cut off mid sentence when talking about movies 89/90

I disagree slightly with Nathan's theory about Star Trek always being out of step with other Sci-fi films releading around it. This film is a huge exception to that - and it's probably a big reason for this being one of the best grossing Star Trek films from this run of the franchise. This year The Voyage Home was joined by the likes of - Back to the Future Part 2 Honey I Shrunk the Kid's And Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure It absolutely belongs in that same genre / style of family friendly Sci-fi comedy. All 4 films have bonkers scripts / idea's behind them, but all rely heavily on the Sci-fi elements not so much for the moment to moment story beats, but for the set up / framing for the mad-cap adventures the cast get up to.

I don’t know what the plan is but once you have gotten through all the films, TNG & Kelvin, it might be interesting to go back and curate a list of Trek tv episodes that have some connection or influence on the Trek films. Like Space Seed for Star Trek 2 or Journey to Babel for Trek 3 & 4, Q Who? and Best of Both Worlds for First Contact, etc…?

The music is brought up And Rob's credentials are again under fire. He did not notice that Khan's soundtrack is the same as Aliens But here, here, he did not notice that most of the music is from the animated Lord of the Rings film

Yes, whaling was an issue in the 80s, mostly aimed at Japanese whalers Time Travel featured in at least three stories in the original series In the first, they had to kill Joan Collins

This is fun! Will Galaxy Quest (which Trek fans rank among the best Star Trek films) be part of this journey? I hope you two pre-existing Trekkies will watch the Original Series at some point, as there are answers to many things you speculate about here. In lieu: yes, the Prime Directive existed, but it was known as General Order One; and yes, there are time travel episodes that provide a foundation for Spock's slingshot maneuver.

Seconded on Galaxy Quest. I know that was discussed in one episode as a possible future bonus nod, so hoping that's still in the mix. Rob definitely has the background to get some of the in jokes by this point.

Its fascinating to see 2 casual/medium level Trek fans try to indoctrinate a complete novice to the franchise. They are learning things long time die hards (such as myself) know backwards and forwards. It’s the element that surprises me the most.

I think Galaxy Quest works better if you have at least seen some of the TV episodes (especially from the original series & Next Generation while Wesley was still a kid) - and if you know some of the backstage stories. It's a great film, but still so many little nods and references to to things like red shirts on away missions, a kid whose so exceptional he's the only one capable of flying the ship, shakepearean actors who think this is all beneath them, the captain getting his shirt ripped, washed up actors making money on the convention circuit, female crew members only existing as eye candy etc. And all that's before you get into the big "come back show / film decades later" and fan community angles. The Star Trek films alone don't match up with what Galaxy Quest does best - parody the old sci-fi TV shows from 60's, 70's and 80's.
