Darn! I don't have a story about becoming a Canadian, I have always been a Canadian, born and raised here. I've lived in Canada all my life and I think it is great seeing new people coming too and loving Canada as much as I do. It makes me proud to see how proud they are to call Canada their home. Not only that, I can eat authentic food from all around the world without ever having to leave Canada.

Hey Tash, your question re how long does it take to become a Canadian citizen is difficult to explain in just a few words. Here's one quick way. You can apply federally or you can apply provincially via the Provincial Nominee Program. I live in British Columbia so I'll speak to our program (BC PNP). Each year the Provincial governments are allotted a number of immigration seats. My Province, BC, posts the skillset(s) it requires and to be filled by new immigrants. Currently, the priorities are: 1. Childcare, 2. Construction, 3. Healthcare, 4. Technology, and 5. Veterinary Care. This is basically our Immigrant Shopping List at the moment and if you wish to immigrate to BC, have these skills, have a job offer, then you will be fast tracked to citizenship. The Provincial Gov will work with you and the process can be fast tracked to just 2 or 3 years. Thanks Tash for teaching an old Canuck about his country.

You're right, we Canadians DO have it good. We have it so good, sometimes we don't appreciate it as much as we should. Canadians will be the first to tell you how Canada isn't perfect, and how every day in Canada isn't a rapturous celebration of the good life the way it's often portrayed. But the plumbing works, potholes get fixed (eventually!), cops don't demand bribes, and the civil service doesn't work for tips. We Canadians often take "Peace, Order, and Good Government" for granted, so it's good to be reminded from time to time of how unusual Canada is.

Tash: to apply for permanent residency in Canada, u would have to live in Canada for 1,095 days, non continuous. You can apply through the Permanent Residence Portal by way of an account online. Canada accepts a large number of ppl every year, including an ever increasing number of Americans of about 1,500 every month! Overall, Canada accepts 400,000 new Canadians per year. A word of caution. New housing is being built, but it will take a bit of time for catchup. Housing costs in our major cities are getting high. U can apply for citizenship after 5 years of residency.

Ya, the housing crisis is making immigration a bit more difficult to navigate, for sure. Building has to catch up with demand and, at least in BC, more restrictions are being put on short term rentals through companies like AirBnB and VRBO to help make more long term housing available.

plaid shirts of today are nothing like the traditional ones, I would say they died out just after free trade with the USA/Mexico in the 1980's, When the textile plants moved out, They looked the same but they were made out of thick like a cotton/wool blanket about 10 times thicker than the ones you get today, It originated from Scotland, Well the plaid design did, not necessary the shirt itself.

If you're going to do St. John's, go for the George St Music Festival! I live in Hamilton (outside Toronto) and St. John's is 100% undoubtedly my FAVOURITE city in Canada! The people there are the salt of the earth amazing! I LOVE them all and had the time of my life there! (Check out the Terry Fox monument where he started his run when in town!) Since you'll be going half way across the Island for summer icebergs, you may as well do a few hundred more clicks and hit Gros Morne National Park! My absolute favourite of the National Parks so far, and I have done parks like Jasper, Banff, Revelstoke, Kootenay, Yoho, Georgian Bay, Point Pelee, etc Now the drive from Banff to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway was absolutely AMAZING, but for me, the most scenic of all drives was The Cabot Trail around the Atlantic coastline of The Cape Breton Highlands National Park! Take your time to stop at ALL the scenic look outs along the way, maybe do some whale watching, hike one of the trails. then camp overnight at one of the top rated as most scenic campgrounds in NA, Meat Cover! The scenery is amazing in both the Summer and the Fall, but if you plan on taking that drive, be sure to do it clockwise! Trust me it makes a HUGE difference!

Immigration in Canada is funky. It depends on what country you come from the speed at which you can obtain citizenship. For you or someone else from another commonwealth country the process is faster than say Asian or African countries. I presume French speaking African countries would be a faster process than non French. For people from the UK, the process is fast, I had a friend who moved here from, and he and his whole family were able to get full citizenship within or right at the two year mark. Another friend from Mexico, started with a student visa, found work, and I think the process for her to get permanent residency it took about 2 years after finding a job in a company big enough that would sponsor her permanent residency, typically only large employers offer this(legal costs). If she were to go for citizenship she’d have to write a test on history and laws etc and the process would take an additional 1-2 years I believe minimum. Permanent residency is the step below citizenship that gives you all the same benefits, health, freedoms, no limitations like when they first get here on traveling internationally etc (need to show you want to stay and contribute to the country so restrictions on time spent out of the country during the PR process), the only major limitation with PR over citizenship is they can’t vote provincially or federally, but they can vote in municipal elections, which is fairly big thing if you’re in a large city like Toronto etc where their budgets and ppl affected under the municipal exceed some provinces in population. I may be wrong about them voting in municipal but I believe they can, google-able, but I know for a fact, the ones that just keep PR and don’t go for citizenship, eventually transition to a ‘Landed immigrant’ after x amount of years, I think 10-20, but once landed immigrant they can for a fact vote municipal. Still no voting, but then unlike PR they can go live in another country for 6 months or a year and maintain their landed immigrant status and come and go to Canada as they please, but PR I think can’t be out of the country more than 6 months of the year or a year, then they may loose it and have to start the process over. Sponsorship is also only one stream to PR or citizenships, there are other ways too, if your in an industry that we have a shortage in that can expedite it, or I think the normal longer way, that you’d pay all the expenses for is I believe still like a points system, like multiple categories each weighted out of a score of ~100, for things like how much money u have in assets and would be bringing with you is one category, another is education, again the more the better, others are age and health conditions, in that case the younger the better and healthier the better of course, we have a top heavy population so it favours people who have education or young families with them or another 30+ years to work. There’s also refugees or people claiming asylum from war torn countries or countries in South America which is a whole other thing where I believe they’re helped a bit by charities and provincial government to get set up and if they can manage here a few years and can work I think they can also get expedited citizenship.

I've met two Aussies a hair dresser and plumber both work in a place then move on to another location. Working retail you can get a job in BC at Canadian Tire, Walmart etc. someplace with locations across the country. I love the winter but when spring arrives, flowers and millions of birds heading north. warm air, cool water hard to beat and the May 2-4 weekend! Today or tomorrow I'm going to get some pics of this 10 meter tall snow person before it melts. Ottawa's Winterlude Festival is this month lots of snow but weather has been too warm to make good ice on the Rideau Canal for skating. next week temps -2C next Friday +4C and rain. Since the 1780s an iconic bit of Canadian clothing is the Hudson Bay blanket, warmth for a lifetime in the great outdoors. I've been in Canada my whole life... and I'm not sure I ever owned a plaid shirt. By the accent I'm I would have guessed Northern Europe, Norway, Sweden, Finland type places... but I really suck at guessing accents and they said "Eastern Europe. They did say "eternal summer" which made me think arctic circle, so... East and North... Russia like they said. I will say Canadians don't like "Russian Politics" but we're also not fond of US politics... but the treatment of the people is "less" biased. The "almighty" Google says 2 things about becoming a citizen: First, processing and application takes about 15 months, and second among the requirements to apply is: To become a Canadian citizen, you must: a) be a permanent resident and b) have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years So... 3yrs, plus 15 months, plus whatever it takes to get permanent residency.

There is the odd chance you might run into a rude Canadian, but that is easily dealt with. Just dont talk to that person.

Canadian tuxedo was invented by an American - it was just first worn in BC. So not really Canadian
