I was about to say how impressed I was with the Coast Guard Commander. THAT is real command -- you could hear it in his voice. And the sailors and hospitality workers who took up the mantle and organized their own efforts to help people -- THAT is real leadership. Mario Pellegrini the mayor, and Commander De Falco, seem like real leaders of quality and character...

Schettino = chicken of the sea...he's a spineless chickenshit little coward and I hope the people he killed haunt him the rest of his life...it's sad that they didn't charge him with murder. That chickenshit needed to face multiple murder charges. I hope Schettino never knows peace ever again. the water was shallower than the draft of his vessel, he should've stayed on course and not done a sail by. Schettino saved himself from the water, he couldn't save himself from the law.

Wow! It must be overwhelming to someone who worked and lived aboard it. Was that the ship w/the I-95 corridor? You must have put in a few miles, lol! I'm glad you weren't aboard it too. I'm glad you have such good memories of your time on the ship. It can't be easy work though so I admire people who are employed in the cruise industry, not to mention being away from your loved ones for extended periods.🚞🌺

You never know one's true character until they're faced with a matter of life and death. In the case of those who live on the island who rushed to lend a hand and help in any way they could, opening their homes to complete strangers in the name of humanity, they are the definition of hero. Selfless people are a rarity and it is only when you're faced with a situation where you put yourself last and your character is tested when you can look at your life and honestly say to yourself you made a difference. When you can say, "I never even knew their names" of people you saved, you are really something of an extreme rarity.

Absolutely agree. They should have all made it to safety in a much less chaotic manner. The captain should be charged with murder for each one of the lives lost that day. Absolute disregard for safety of the plotted, preplanned cruising course. Also total disregard for making adequate safety calls over the intercom as soon as the events unfolded and he knew. Things like this scared me at a young age also, giving me a type of irrational fear. Granted, it wasn't anything current at the time, but it was two young readers encyclopedias, one on The Titanic, the other on Pompeii. The diagrams, drawings, and photos shook me. 30 years later, and I have no desire to go out to sea, or travel anywhere near volcanoes.

I am watching information in the wrong orders as they have occurred. Thanks to the survivors for giving us their films and accounts. Because of this I will keep my feet on dry land and remember those who are interred below. My many thanks to the people who came together to help the people and welcome them into their home and provide safety. There is a place reserved for you at the table of our maker above.

The captain not helping and looking out for himself reminds me of the Sewol Ferry tragedy ( Rotten Mango made a really good video about it.) When things got bad, the captain took a rescue boat with his crew and saved himself, leaving the kids behind. It was disgusting and that reminds me of this captain. Pathetic.

"Vada a bordo, cazzo!" A line that should never be uttered to any Captain or man in a position of authority. You're the captain, you have the ultimate responsibility and accountability for each and every soul on that vessel. When you realised it was inevitable you should have ordered the ship to be abandoned. In fact you should have got people to the boats as a precautionary measure first, then ordered them launched as the situation deteriorated. But no, you ran around with your hair on fire for 20 minutes, got into a panic and ran away. You couldn't even stay in uniform, your actions, rather lack of, certainly showed your unworthiness of it. It's sad that the Captain of all people could have gone down as someone who did everything he could and have to be practically dragged off his ship after hours of searching and helping people trapped. But again, no. History will forever record he was the exact opposite, with a legacy of 32 dead people and their families forever shattered. And countless PTSD and trauma among the thousands of survivors. We can only thank providence that the Concordia sank the way it did, and that close to shore. If it had gone the other way how many more people would have been killed. The worst thing is how preventable it all was at so many steps and missed opportunities.

The ship didn’t go down. A captain job isn’t to sink his ship. He made too many errors but his presence or absence on board after the accident would have changed nothing. Apparently, he didn’t know what to do.

Not me watching these stories while i actually presently work on cruise ships. The thing is no kne us never fully prepared for this type of tragedy. We do drills once a week to prepare just incase but no one would never fully be able to know what it is like until tragedy strikes. I hope never to experience anything like this. The captain as I remember the story for lack of a better way of saying it was " showing off " for a woman he brought up to the bridge...if he was thinking with his big head 38 people would still be alive...what I learned watching this was the ship was on a collision course if the captain hadn't tried a " Hail Mary " manuver the ship would have just ran a ground...
