Been watching videos of some of my old places I used to surf and this kind of expresses like a session I've had. The longboards like to sit out there and clump up and talk and cherry pick waves. Love to see them get dusted every once in a while spaz paddling, then swoop around and get wave 2 or 3 on a nice mini simmons or other wide tail short board. Way easier to paddle around though the churn... and you can get out way faster without having to navigate a 9"6'. I definitely would have taken the walk around by like wave 3 just to drift in to express dominance and save energy... saving the slow paddle for catching the next bomb instead of worrying who is around you. Cuz if it was just us, with a set I'd hand you your pick. But if you blow it I'm going on the next and cherry picking myself. But this swell looks like it shut down because of the south-west ish wind...and an outbound tide. Which will give you like a couple extra pops at a nice one if you wait it out. But if its been an hour or so... its time to go. Lots of water moving around, catch an inside one. Let the session go and grab some grub and a beer. Kicking is fine, if I was to give my stats on close out barrels and ones I made in NY its like 95% closed out. I kind of like the deep ones where you get the view and get that millisecond of bliss, fuck the consequences, especially on a sandbar. The other part of surfing is trying not to hurt yourself in pursuit of the ride. Gotta learn how to shallow dive and not get fucked up by a reef if you really wanna see the cleaner barrel than NY. Trust me I grew up surfing there and although we get some good waves in the winter or hurricane season, its way more pleasurable given better year round conditions. Hope to see you in the water. Godspeed, friend. Thank you for posting this, reminds me of home.

Great video. I'm curious, what do you think are the ideal tide conditions for Rockaway? In my limited experience at low tide the majority of waves are fast/closeouts. What do you look for? Thanks!

rockaway beach used to be a low tide spot, and some places, like beach 77th street, still are. Nowadays, most spots seem to work best about 2 hours before high tide. I personally prefer the faster waves though as the waves are usually extremely weak and it's easier to get them in a crowd when people are constantly getting caught behind sections.

Enjoy these videos. At least you’re goofy. These waves are annoying to surf on backhand
