I have a couple of Swedish friends, and they always tease me with how happy I sound: I'm "singing" about serious issues. 😂 To me, Swedish dialects are either beautiful, sexy, charming, sunny or funny. I grew up watching Swedish children's TV. "Vi på Saltkråkan", "Den vita stenen", Emil and Pippi. Honestly, the Swedes were so far above and beyond us in TV and movie production, especially in the 60ies and 70ies, it's not even funny. And then ABBA came, of course. Back then, Norway was the boring old church lady when it came to entertaining kids and young people, and Sweden was the land of magic and fun, even before ABBA. It has evened out quite a bit, but many of my most magical childhood and early teen memories come with a Swedish soundtrack attached... Thank you, Sweden!

I am a Belgian and I spent a lot of time in both countries, and I even learned some Swedish and Norwegian. The stereotypes are more of less true, and both are very complementary in some ways, but also share some cultural similarities. I know a Swede who runs a company and has some Norwegians working for him too. He always tells them: please tell me when you are angry, because even if you are, I still hear a happy voice, so I don't know. That is of course the phonology, and it still tricks the Swedes. I like the urban sophistications of the Swedes (especially in Stockholm), and the east of Sweden also has much more sunlight than the west coast of Norway, where it is much more overcast. That climatic difference is often forgotten (but obviously you cannot blame the Norwegians for that). Norwegians are indeed the most sporty and outdoorsy of the two. No matter the weather, they will venture out in their splendid nature.

But it is significantly easier to buy a home in Norway, which is why Norway has by far the highest homeownership percentage among all Nordic countries. And although the cost of living is about 35% higher in Norway, the worst possible Norwegian pension was 71% higher than in Sweden at least in 2020. So In a lifespan, it's quite similar. The median swede is definitely ahead at age 25, but the median Norwegian catches up in the long run.

@@ujmm I agree, though if you have a decent job and start saving early I doubt the pension difference would be that much, if you only compare government pension to government pension maybe, but most people in Sweden have a private pension fund, a corporate pension fund, and a government pension fund. Unless you're at the bottom of the food chain then you're fucked and have to live on crumbles.

I find it funny that they think all Norwegians are so rich and that we all drive around in Teslas. Sure there's quite a few Teslas around, but they cost less here. I think Sweden is more of a class society from old times so they're maybe more aware of these things than we are. Rich is such a subjective word and depends on who we compare ourselves to. Most norwegians have a modest/normal life on par with the rest of Europe. Some have high paying jobs, some don't. It's not like we personally stuff our pockets with Norway's oil money.

As a Norwegian, it's almost like being in same country when i am in Sweden. Norwegians and Swedish speaks their own languages, and still understand 90% of what's said both ways. I have been in Sweden probably 300 times. In Stockholm, Uppsala and Gothenburg for example. They are always positive vs Norwegians, but it's same overall where we are in Sweden. Border between Norway and Sweden is wide open with no pass restrictions. Norway and Sweden is like one country combined. Some chick from Ukraina told me once that Norwegian sounds like a singing language.

Living outside Norway, I feel my compassion and love for the other Nordic countries have accelerated! I view Swedes as very entrepreneurial people, and Sweden is a beautiful country. Hello. I am a danish person living in Norway for 7 yrs now. I stay entirely because of the nature. Many people often mention "high salary" here in Norway, completely forgetting or not exploring the cost of living, eating, drinking and driving on the roads. The salary in Denmark are somewhat lower, but everything are 3-5 times cheaper, and here I really mean EVERYTHING. We dont pay to drive on the roads and we dont pay for treatment at the doctor and hospitals: But we do pay higher taxes. Nonetheless, when you do the math I dont have more money to spend for myself here in Norway compared to Denmark for the very same job as a social worker/saksbehandler.

As a retired swedish ww2 hero I want to add to the story: We should be thankful and grateful to Norway since most of the nature in the form of scenery, soil / stones and wildlife etc has drifted from the Norwegian hills and mountains to form what today is called sweden. Not many mention this fact - but we should do more to show gratitude toward Norway and the norwegian people. And we should also finally admit that the vikings originally came from Norway (and later spread to sweden and denmark).

Interesting to hear and read about different opinions about our countries. I'm swedish and has always loved Norway. As a child in 70s, the hole family went often to Norway for vacation. Such a beautiful country! And nice people. I've been to Oslo, Åndalsnes, Kirkenes and many times to Tronhiem. For 16 years I had a neighbour that was Norwegian, from Trondheim. Such a wonderful human being! Always very nice and helpful. Since I'm from Härnösand in the middle of Sweden it has been easy to take the car and drive to Trondheim. Nidaros domen is beautiful. In the 70s and 80s we went to Norway to by groceries because it was cheaper, now it's the other way around. It doesn't matter who's country is the richer one because it goes up and down and I think we have very high standards in both Norway and Sweden. Children in both countries can educate themselves and be what they want and have a good life. Of course there are diffenties but we are more similar than different to each other. I also think that a little bit of competition between the countries is good. We help each other to be better. I am very happy to be your neighbour, Norway. Don't go anywhere. 😉 Come to visit us as much as you want. You're always welcome! 😊 And I absolutely looove to see you on cross-country skies. You are the best! ❤❤❤

Interesting . . . when I worked in Landskrona, Sweden in 1972, Sweden was much wealthier than Norway. I experienced wonderful hospitality by the people in Landskrona, but actually found myself having more in common with Norwegians, since they were more "outdoorsy" and "individualistic." Norwegians seemed more extraverted. I traveled the entire lengths of both Sweden and Norway, plus lived just across the Oresund from Denmark.

Well here is a good story. Before they were the A's in ABBA Agneta and Ana-freed sang for a band that performed at the Center Party Midsommarsfesten Dance at Lund University. A friend was president of the College Division of the Center Party and so invited the band to eat out with us on the waterfront in Malmo. Agneta asked if we could sit at a separate table for her to practice her English. She wanted to move to the US to be on Broadway. That is how I met her the first time. She was just a sweet country girl - very nice. Of course, ironically, ABBA's last public concert was also in Landskrona.

Another thing she mentioned was that Bjorn was much shorter than her and so wore platform shoes to seem to seem the same height. My impression is that Bjorn hBjörn, Benny och svenska flickornaas made up a partially fictional history of ABBA for public consumption. When Agneta and Ana - Freid did start singing with Bjorn and Benny, the band was called Björn, Benny och svenska flickorna! He told record companies that he was an unmarried playboy and that the two flicka were just background singers, working by the hour!

Always been on top of technology, science, fashion, culture (ABBA, Roxette, Avicii etc.). While Norway has usually been happy just being by itself, walking around in its beautiful nature, smelling the flowers like Ferdinand and stumbling over some oil fields here and there 😄.. Kinda like the urban & trendy vs the lucky villager. If it was one country, Sweden would be the city and Norway would be the rural area.

The labor force participation rate and work ethics are pretty much the same in both countries. I think both nations score equally high on labour productivity. But there were some years where lots of young Swedes moved to Norway to work in the service industry. Good salaries, strong Norwegian currency and lots of jobs, but that has changed a bit now.

@@Lets-Walk-Around The funny thing is that in the beginning no one thought there would be as much oil on Norwegian continental shelf that it was/is. So Norway and Sweden made a deal (in the 70s) that Sweden would get ownership on big areas of the shelf in change for 40% of Volvo stocks.. but the Swedes backed out in the 11th hour because they thought Volvo was worth more and so didn't think the deal was worth it 😬. Now Volvo is Chinese owned and the Norwegian petroleum fund is the largest fund in the world 😅

There defenetly are a few historical and thus cultural differenceses between Sweden and Norway. Sweden used to be an Empire back in the 1600s. Norway used to be a province under both Danish and Swedish rule. After gaining independence from Swedish rule in 1905, Norway started to build their image as a national state and unique national identity, having a bit of a minority complex toward their brothers and sisters to the east. Sweden has always been known as Norwasys "older sister or brother" . (Depending on how one genders a nation. I suppose one genders a nation female) Sweden has always been culturally far more "continental European" then Norway has. Norway became rich after finding huge deposits of oil along the long western coast. Before that time, Norway was a poor country. Many, if not most people were starving, and life was a battle to survive the lack of availability of food, especially in the inland part of the country. Fish has always been abundant along the coast. Before the 70s, Swedes traveled to Norway to stock up on cheap food etc, after Norway really began to earn money from the oil resources, wages, livingstandards and thus all living costs went up in Norway, and now Norwegians travel to Sweden to stock up on foods, sigarettes, snus and alcohol etc I belive wages in Norway and Sweden are similar if you take into account living costs in the two countries. The two nabours have a love/hate relationship. They love to hecle each other, hate loosing in sports to each other, but really love one another (for the most part). Similar to most peaceful neighboring countries, whit historical conflict.

I am Norwegian and all Swedes I've met have been awesome. Really. I have OCD so I will elaborate a bit more, too: Swedes online often come across of arrogant, Napoleon-complex-ish or along those lines, but that can be because I love history and I pay more attention to it when people don't know or don't want to show understanding of context or the subject matter. Norwegians and Swedes have a sibling rivalry and I and the vast majority of Norwegians will back them up whenever without hesitation, love them as a people, no matter how some single individuals can ruin it for both sides. Sweden is more of a "tech" and self sustained country, also more rich in minerals; Norway is rich from oil and gas but first and foremost WISE DISTRIBuTION AND PLANNING, is perhaps the most "fishy" and "ski-y" nation on Earth as well as most beautiful. Swedish people are beautiful by the way. Stockholmer youth can be a bit weird with trying to be different too much or lack self conscience. There's a small minority of disgusting "daddy's boys" rich spoilt teenage brats in both countries. In Norway there's a starting trend now with Aaron Carter / 90's boyband type haircuts and *EVERYONE* is doing it and it looks ridicolously stupid and ugly. It never looked good in the 90's and it doesn't do it now either. Sorry had to get some superficial annoyances out of the way. The vast majority in both countries are good human beings, and well educated and independent thinking reasonable people, and the Swedes loves friluftsliv/outdoors too by the way.

It goes both ways, and the amount of jokes around that is insane. I would say Norway/Sweden is more similar to how Germans and Austrians view each other. Still, I would say that the above is only valid as long as we are in our own countries. Abroad, we would quickly go into more important matters, like if there is any tasty herring in this country and what about the shrimps and mayo?

I lived in Sweden and now I am living in Norway so it is funny to see this video. Yes swedes and norwegians are similar from my french point of view. They are both super nice, helpful, peaceful and quiet. They avoid confrontation at all cost, they leave you alone, which I like. Norwegians love outdoor sports and nothing scare them. Sweden has a more diverse population. Despite considered to be richer, the food is extremely bad in Norway, with no variety, the worst country in whole Europe for that. Much better in Sweden thanks to ICA. The nature in Norway is waaay more beautiful and stunning than in Sweden, sorry for that swedes :D. That's why I love Norway more! Also when I lived in Sweden, lot of swedes told me about Norway and how expensive it is etc..., but here in Norway, nobody talks about Sweden, like it doesn't exist :D

@@lpdude2005 Yes I know MENY, the only store which is ok I agree. HOWEVER, the northest MENY in norway is in Trondheim more or less. I live in Tromsoe, so more than 1000km away :D. In Tromsoe there is absolutely no good supermarket (KIWI/REMA/COOP sells all the same crappy products). Kiruna is closer.

@@peacefulminimalist2028 actually there are more shops than mentioned but they all sell the same products, sometimes with a different packaging. Usually there is only one choice for one product, which means that every day I eat the same product for all year round, but for people here it is for all their life (eg: dark chocolate, organic oat, fullkorn pasta...). Most products are also pretty "low-cost quality" for french standards. Also very few organic products. I travelled in the south, I didn't see that much differences except in "big" cities where you have indeed MENY. Anyway, very weird for the "most developped" country in the world :D

Very much. The more north you go in sweden we are closer to our Nordic family. Especially what ppl think of Finland. I felt shame watching sweeds nothing so little. Everyone on the east of Sweden has been to Finland.

Norway is the most beautiful country of europe in my opinion , I find the Norwegian people that I met very friendly. It is a very relaxed country. I think they are mainly rich because of the oil industrie, free money so to say, and that make them in business a bit lazy, on the other side, they enjoy their freetime maybe more. From international business they cannot be compared with Sweden which has made world class companies like Volvo or IKEA. That's really the problem with the free oil billions, its makes an economy lazy. Having said that, they spend there billions much more intelligent then their counterparts in the Arabic world, fantastic pension systems and great infrastructure.

U dont get there by beeing lazy😆 oil money is in a piggy bank as an insurance and not used by the norwegian ppl....

I always have loved Norway and I remember going by train with my grandparents on a supercool trip from the north of Norway down to Oslo and back over to Sweden again. So I was chocked when I read in the newspaper they in reality hate us thinking we are no good at all. Old ladies, young people you name it did not seem to like us at all. I am a long time livestreamer on a few sites on the internet (like former Justin TV now Twitch etc etc) so I decided to start a little investigation and sure if I said I was Swedish they guys from Norway changed their attitude and showed they really did not like me at all. Since then they can go ..... and they suck at Hockey too they beat us once since the beginning of time.

Personally, I feel like a little bit more norwegian, it's my spiritual home country, I can't wait to visit it soon. I know less about swedish ppl but for me they seems a little bit closed but lovely and nice people. That's why was hard to make the decision to which one is that I wanna start studying. Maybe I'm wrong even though I'm norwegian myself... But I assume norwegians are just as closed off as swedes, but that we sound happier to them, just as they sound happier to us. Because we for sure prefer our personal space. And in that way we can seem closed off even if we can be pretty polite. But that's not what you feel like if you are going out partying in Oslo. But you can't really consider drunk people imo haha. Edit: I think it also depends on where in Norway you live. I live in the eastern part of Norway and we generally seem like we are more in a rush and more cold compared to the south and west for example... Although Oslo is something on its own. Oslo is rather lively

Technically, that is only half true. Fish IS the plural of a single fish species but if you have multiple fish species it is more correct to state that there are fishes. This very complicated for people learning the language so it is generally not taught. The same is often misunderstood about the words cactuses and octopuses; cacti and octopi are not English plurals but are still accepted. Octopuses and cactuses is indeed the correct English plurals of both words, and if you want to be more correct to argue against someone octopi is not even of Latin origin it is of Greek origin so it would be octopodes. I am a linguistics, and I dislike when people say things are so incorrect. Remember that just like every other species, language evolve too and they adopt words, drop words and change their pronunciation as so much more.

The stereotype that all Norwegians sound happy when they speak is IMO only a half truth. Maybe that is the case for eastern Norwegian dialects, but some sound quite different. But I guess this is the impression Swedes (and Danes) have because eastern Norwegian dialect is something they are most likely to hear.

What they know is that even if the salary is higher the prices are higher too. So our ability to buy a beer is probably no more affordable than in sweden. The difference is that when we go to most other countries our money lasts longer. It is interessting how swedes know so little about a neighbouring country. They are obsessed with the oil money and fail to see that our GDP is built upon many other factors, like shipping (third largest in the world), export of fish, mining, different natural ressources, innovation/technology. Even if it is a general view swedes tend to be very one minded when talking about Norway, it is always the same things, talk funny, nature and oil. It is like they have no idea what they are talking about. Another thing is the tendencies to portray themselfs as a «poor country» compared to Norway. The fact is that they have been a wealthy country far longer than us. Sweden have the biggest GDP of all the Nordics. However it is less of a egalitarian society than us.

The Norwegians took my disabled husband to Moscow AFTER: anti-war pickets of my husband in the Russian Federation, his defense of the rights of Ukrainians in Norway, the issuance of documents to my husband by the Norwegian Red Cross for his close relatives (Polish servicemen repressed by the Russians), sentencing his defender to prison (in married to a citizen of Finland for 25 years) in Belarus, who reported the crime of the Norwegians against the Ukrainians and was recognized as a Political prisoner. My husband and his lawyer warned the Norwegians about the coming war, but they did not believe him. The husband was kidnapped and the war began. And after the war began, the Norwegians do NOT admit their mistakes! Unlike the Swedes, the Norwegians DO NOT LIKE to admit their mistakes even when the Chechen refugees deported by the Norwegians were killed in the Russian Federation (Norwegian media)...

That's just not true at all. The income/wealth difference between rich and poor is basically the same in Norway and Sweden, with Norway being very slightly more equal. After taxes, Sweden scored 0,267 while Norway scored 0,263 (Smaller number means smaller difference between rich and poor) Average amount of income per person, adjusted for local prices of wares, is called GNI PPP per capita. Norway's GNI PPP per capita is $108.790. Sweden's GNI PPP per capita is $72.990. So, you can buy more things in Norway with an average Norwegian income than you can in Sweden with an average Swedish income. And since Norwegians have a similar or even slightly more equal income/wealth distribution than Sweden does, that means that most Norwegians can afford to buy more things in Norway than most Swedes can afford to buy in Sweden.
