Well done. Very clear. I would encourage anyone thinking of going 5 or more drives to use SHR-2 or RAID2. Once you start going higher than 4 drives your chances of another drive or data failure start going up. Rebuilds also take a long time, think several days, and another drive failure on a RAID 5 rebuild means everything is lost. With RAID6 or SHR-2 you will feel MUCH happier.

@@veneratedmortal4369 Why would you need to go SHR2 with only 4 drives of 4TB? SHR is more than enough. Personally I'd suggest going for two 8TB drives in SHR. It will act as RAID1 so you'll get 8TB total. Same capacity as if you went with three 4GB drives in SHR. You can always add more drives in the future. It will convert the SHR/RAID1 into SHR/RAID5 once you add a third drive. But 4 drives is the recommended maximum for SHR/RAID5 (not officially, just according to the community). If you have 5+ drives then you should probably go with SHR2/RAID6.

I have had a NAS at home and one at work for the past 8 years. Both have been great, but I started out with WD Green drives, which were slow and had failures. Later had some WD Red drives, which also had several failures. Finally replaced them all with WD Gold drives and haven't had a failure since I did 3 years ago. Very happy with them.

When I upgraded from a DS213, my concern was for the future. The 213 served well for 6 years, but the upgrade was necessitated by its increasing inability to run certain Synology software. I therefore decided to spring for the DS718+, rather than the 218 series. Migrating my two WD 3TB Red drives was easy, and being on the cusp of DSM 7, I think the choice of the 718 was a good one.

Regarding the 1 bay stations: You can have a second hard drive attached for backup. So if your main drive crashes for some reason, you can put a new hard drive into your Diskstation and recover from your backup. While you might loose the data that you put on your Synology after the last backup, for average Joe, that might not be that much.

So if you were not going to have a backup I would actually recommend this method (hard drive with hybperbackup) OVER a RAID1. This is because hybperbackup gives you much greater flexibility where you get a crypto attack or something like that. RAID is just good for up time while a drive goes down

regarding the switch also look into QNAP .they have a 16x2.5 Gbps plus 2x10Gbps RJ45 plus 2x10Gbps optical. i run a small network with 12 users for 3D-Design Synology DS2116+ws connechted via 10 Gbps RJ45. And there is one more type of "upgrade" there: High availabilty. means you buy exactly the same box again from Synology and connect the two NAS with their high availability app. then one NAS is running and the second is in standby. if the running NAS fails, the standby one takes over without the user recognizing it. ok, that is expensive.....and the chance that a synology NAS fails is low. BUT there are usage cases where a failure of the NAS would have very bad consequences. in that case make sure you choose a NAS which supports high availability.

I’ve been using the DS220+ with two 16TB disks. I use it for storage of all my photos as a photographer. I also use Synology Drive because it allows me to have current projects on both laptop and desktop and they sync together via the NAS. Very helpful when i want to move my editing from laptop to desktop. Don’t have to copy and paste files.

I have the DS920+ with 4 12TB Ironwolf hard drives, and upgraded to 8GB of ram. It also has 2 m.2 drives. When I stream Blu Ray quality videos, it takes a few seconds for the video to catch up with the sound. I have trouble skipping ahead, or backing up in a video. If I turn on subs it takes several seconds to start back up. My Freenas server that I built, with eight 4TB hard drives, 16GB of ram, and an intel 4 core Xeon processor doesn't do this. It may help someone when their buying to know this. I wish I had purchased the DS1621xs+, with the Xeon processor. Of course that's another $1000.00, but about as much as the 4 -12TB drives. Also if anyone is interested, the 8 drive Freenas with WD Reds, makes no noise, where the 4 12TB Ironwolf make a lot of noise. I don't know if it's the brand or the 5400 rpm Reds compared to the 7200 rpm Ironwolves. I hope this may help somebody decide. I do love your videos, and will continue to watch.

I'm in the process of deciding on a NAS to replace my 8ish years old Drobo, so videos like this are extremely helpful. QNap vs Synology, deciding on hw configurations, can I do a reasonable rackmount setup (i.e. RS1221+ vs DS1621+?). Do I want to run VMs on it? Well, I have a Threadripper machine for that. Do I want a Plex server? Yes (I'd like to rip my old blu-rays and have them easily available to digitally watch). Aside from the usual backup tasks and Surveillance Station.

You should mention the limitations. I just purchased a DS418, and found that model doesn’t support Active Backups. A NAS that doesn’t do backups is like a screen door on a submarine.

It’s not an issue, especially for home backups. For more serious business I generally will want BTRFS backups as you can snapshot the hyper backup to give extra security in case a hacker somehow gets full admin access to your NAS

Hi, could you do a tutorial on how to set up a virtual desktop infrastructure using the virtual machines in synology nas? I have seen a lot of tutorials that cover machine creation and connection to it through a web browser. I was wondering if synology had any option to use a remote client like Citrix to be able to connect and use multiple displays. I noticed most synology nas devices mention "Citrix ready" among the features, but I haven't been able to figure out what that meant and if what I want to do is possible. As far as I can tell, if you connect to the vm through the browser you are stuck with only 1 monitor. Thanks!!

Hello! , I wanted to ask you a question, I would like to buy my first nas to use at home, to keep my photo library (about 1 terabyte) and use it as a google photo. I wanted to spend as little as possible obviously, I saw the j models but 512 mb of ram scare me, (I think they are not enough for a preview of the photos, or for managing the photos), I would go to at least 1 gb. So I saw the ds118 (160 €) and ds218 (270 €) models, the only j series model with 1 GB of ram is the ds320j (310 €) (also with 4 bay). As a processor they are the same the ram is 1 gb except the 218 which has 2, the only difference I think is the transcoding that in the 118 and 218 models supports up to 4k, but I don't think it is essential, unfortunately they do not support btrfs. Otherwise I would have to switch to ds220 + which has an intel processor, 2gb ram btrfs etc .. but it costs 370 €. What do you recommend to me mainly to manage 1 tb of photos and view previews quickly enough via phone app? Thanks :)

I am interested in RAID backup strategies. I was always hoping that since I had RAID I was protected from any disk failure - since I could recover from any of the 4 disk drives. And saying that, I know that is not the proper point of view. So, now I am a believer. My NAS recently failed and although it recovered, I was in a panic losing a lifetime of photos/videos plus my work, etc. So, do I have to buy an additional unit that matches the primary NAS? Today, I have a 8TB DS411J. I was going to upgrade to a DS418 and then use my current unit as a backup. What would you recommend?

Wow that unit is old! Well the way I see it you have a few different options 1) use the 411 as an offsite hyper backup destination. I would really recommend having the backup offsite because if something happens to your house having your main and your backup together will do you no good 2) use a cloud provider to backup your files If you have a place where someone will not mind you leaving the 411 then having it as an offsite backup is great! (assuming it can run hyper backup vault). Then if you have a folder with your really important files its not a bad idea to also get those backed up somewhere else such as AWS, C2 or B2. Anyone watching this fore cache info should know that its partially out of date. Look on the web for updated info. First, caching works much better under dsm7.x and pretty much is a waste of money under DSM6. Syn made big upgrades to caching in 7. Second, its about a 20% difference for random access, and ~6% for sequential on a 1621 series. Third, probably works much better with 10Gb ethernet, with 1Gb you're not going to see the difference. Fourth, a fast CPU like 1621+ or 1621xs+ will benefit most. Overall, if you want performance out of your caching, you're in the over $1300 range. So you know, I'm not sure at this point but I think it might be as fast or better to just use SSD storage.

RAID is not a backup, so if 2 HDDs should fail, you should recover the backup. If you want to use the best point between price and performance, I think you should use SHR(1)/RAID5 on the DS920+. You can Backup on a single HDD Device such as a normal external drive (Seagate has very good Backup devices for desktops you can use) or/and to an other NAS system (local or on an other place) per HyperBackup.

Haven't pulled the trigger, but have a few questions. Going to replace my very aged server with a NAS. I want to backup my system (Files only). I want to stream my MP4 and MKV TV and Movies. I don't think I need RAID. I would keep it simple and if I can use a 4-5 bay and put in 3 drives to start. 1 for Backup, 1 for Movies, 1 for TV shows and map each drive. Is that doable? 3 mapped drives and if any die, no big deal as I have another backup, replace the drive and up and running again once the files are back on the new drive. Thoughts about this and is there a better method? I keep watching and learning, so thanks for the videos!

I know it is in the high end it sector but there is a code "RC" Rack Cluster. I have the RC18015xs+ as my personal research machine with 12 10tb SAS DRIVES, XEON, 32GB RAM. Just added 2x10GBe card and upgraded to DSM 7. I've had it for 5 years and it is still a beast. And yes it can go up to 180 drives. I have millions of documents and use Universal Search.

I have not used the AWS file before so I cannot comment. However you can backup files from your synology to S3. It is a backup, not as much of a sync though. It should only be done one way from your NAS to the S3. Then if you need to recover the files download them.

So when I was first going into getting NAS drives I did research between the Reds and Ironwolfs and honestly really ended choosing ironwolfs because of WD putting SMR drives in their NAS line. SMR is not a huge deal for something like an external HD, but for a drive you are marketing for NAS its pretty shady

The 4BAY will always be faster as its basically two raid 1 systems raid 0'd together

Hi, thanx for this very extensive good video. I do have a question though. Is there really no way to get higher speeds on wifi like lets say 300 to 500Mbps with for example a ds1621+?

So my notes on that were in MB/s rather than Mb/s. For WiFi speeds it’s totally up to what your router can do, it will not be limited by the synology in 1/10000 cases

@@SpaceRexWill ok i mixed things up with MB/s Megabyte per second which you say maximum over 1 GbE is 110MB. But you also say over wifi it is impossible to get over 110MB no matter how many drivers or NVM or Ram you have. You probably won’t even get 110MB/s because of more package loss. Am i getting this correct. And if I really want higher speed for let’s say video editing only way is around 7 drives and 10Gb/s cable connected directly to computer. With that solution what is your maximum speed you’re getting?

I'm buying the DS720+ for storage, photo, and video editing. It has two 1gbe connections but my question is can I use both if I connect one of those USB to Ethernet adapters?

you can, but I would not... What if your power goes out or your internet goes down? Then all of the sudden your whole site will go down. I would honestly just put it on AWS or something, where you can spend ~$10/month

@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for the quick answer. I have a small shop and a presentation already and all that easily adds up to 55 US Dollars in Getmany. I live in an area in Germany were power outages and no internet are basically not existent. A ups would also be no problem so if I consider a Synology for that, would a 1621+ be powerful enough? I have a drobo that is very old. I've been thinking of getting a Synology MAS to replace my drobo. I have a couple of questions I would definitely like to have it serve Plex so it sounds like I need a plus series Synology. The one nice thing I like about the drobo I didn't have to have the same size that drives you can mix and match and the Synology mix and match drives as well? And what I mean by that let's say you started out with some four terabyte drives you decide to bump them up to eight if you had some four terabyte drives and some eight terabyte drives would that work okay? If you choose SHR then you can always add drives of larger sizes or replace drives of larger sizes to get more space

I got a DS218J Running DSM 7.0 Beta But I've Out Grown it I like to add 1 to two more bays but Need something that can see use DSM 7.0 Any ideas I want to See under 500 CND (390. USD) I use my Nas as Webserver and Media Server

I tried using the 2bay ds218+ as a media server but could not get it working correctly without buffering issues. I tried the synologys video mamagement and plex but couldnt get either working . I returned it and just setup a older dell optiplex with a bunch of drives

I am in a dilemma i want to buy my first nas in order to save my data but I also want to play with vm's but i am worried that the hardware isn't enough for a solid experience so in order not to give an arm and a leg to buy the premium one's from Synology i am thinking of building a home server in order to do both ,but as i hear the Synology software is amazing so i don't what to do any suggestions?Btw great video!

I have a video going over TrueNAS vs Synology that I would checkout. In summery Synology is a more stable, simpler to use product that just 'works'. But if you are someone looking to tinker then TrueNAS will give you endless flexibility on what hardware you want to run it on.
