Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty with our hosts KC Mack, HonestTeacherVibes: Bri Richardson, and the Angry Gym Teacher, Tom Filline!
Let’s have a real talk about Gen Z. They’re just built different. What is up with these snack smugglers and TikTok pre-stars?
Maybe we shouldn’t cry or laugh at the hilarious yet frustrating reality of teaching Gen Z students who don't know how to do a simple signature. It's a skill we often take for granted, but for this new generation, it's a foreign concept. Maybe they figured out a better way?
Signatures stump them but we’re the ones lost at their new language that we can barely keep up with. And it's not just in the hallways, it's in the classroom too. From slang to memes, it's like a whole new language that we have to learn.
And speaking of not keeping up with, we argue with KC about the infamous "shoe crease" dilemma. These kids refuse to change into their PE shoes because they don't want to crease them. He says he gets the issue, us not so much…..
Drink some hot tea to prepare to yell “WORLDSTAR!” at the next teacher debate because it might just hit the internet. Who knew there was a whole wave of Gen Z students starting "fight pages" on social media. It's a disturbing trend that’s taking off - one page even got a brand deal….
But it's not just the students who can be a handful. There was a teacher trying to bully a student who was bullying others. She thought it would hold up a mirror to their actions but that’s just not the route to take bestie.
It’s not always crazy, sometimes its outright HILARIOUS. From "Mrs. Funny Face" to "Mr. Cool" to “[REDACTED]”, these nicknames humble us real quick.

@@gilliantohver3225 so, yes and no. the years included in a generation depends on the study you look at. the generational splits are created using cultural, technological, and social shifts (and more) and sometimes the years aren't set in stone until much later because it is harder to see these things in the moment. there are also blends in who relates to what. those born in the years closest to the generation change often socially straddle them and can relate to both.

@@gilliantohver3225 but also, regardless of this, with the ages they teach and the slang they are referring to, they are talking about gen alpha. this is why KC keeps using "out of date" slang that would be more accurate for gen z, i believe he taught an older grade and has been out of the classroom this year.

As a 2nd grade teacher, learning to tell time on an analog clock is one of our state math standards. I use the big yellow Judy Clock to teach them just like I learned it back in the 90s lol.

My second grader has to pause a sec to compute time on an analogue clock, but he can still do it. It's just a new skill that doesn't come automatically yet. I do, however, know adults in their twenties/thirties who cannot read an analogue clock.

The bank teller at my grandma’s local Bank of America told me I had a beautiful name in cursive. And that’s what motivated me to learn it haha.

If you were born between 1995-2000, had a Gamecube or PS2, grew up with VHS tapes AND DVD's, said "swag" and "lit" in high school, prefer Vine and Tumblr to TikTok and Instagram, have fond memories of Blockbuster Video, Sears, Kmart, and KB Toys, witnessed MTV slowly change from music videos to reality shows, remember a time before influencers (back then we had viral videos and KZbinrs like Fred and Shane Dawson), and have no idea what younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha are talking about, you are your own special category and we should be our own generation

I’ve taught in multiple states and districts. Students across them all have behavioral challenges, at every grade level. Every crisis response training that I’ve been trained in, only those trained in restraints can use a restraint. While difficult to watch and have to clean up the only thing that can be done is to call for support and let the child that is escalated to continue and keep everyone else safe, do what you can to remove items that could become dangerous, and intervene to block things that could be thrown. Legally, even teachers are protected by laws pertaining to keeping others safe and most districts and states will allow non restraint trained teachers to use a bear hug from behind to support a child in being safe while waiting for support.

At least the back half of this episode, I feel so seen! When I hear that a parent has told the teacher they don’t do certain behaviors at home, I want to point out that so many times, the behaviors are over work refusals! So either the parents have better luck getting their kids to do what their asked and the kids have absolutely no respect for teachers or there are few to no demands/expectations at home and/or there are no consequences for refusals at home.

34:23 @honestteachervibes That’s basically the program my husband and I work in (we’re an Intermediate Unit/center-based program). Permanent staff are Safe Crisis Management trained and we have rooms (we call them reflection rooms) with mats for more extreme behavioral issues. We also have designated behavior support staff. Sometimes, though, we have no choice but to clear the room because the student refuses to leave the room. The rest of the class complains and throws fits because they have to move and the student usually ends up destroying the classroom to some degree. And on top of it, we don’t always have the staff to deal with all the issues. One of the things that gets me, though, is that the behaviors seem to start over the smallest things! It’s mind-blowing! I feel like I’m seeing more and more that issues arise because a student isn’t getting what they want or they don’t want to do something because there’s nothing in it for them or something like that.

So at my school we get certified and trained in de-escelation, restraints, holds and releases. If its not a board certified behavioral analyst or registered behavior tech in the situation, if it gets to that point where it is unsafe and past the point of de-escelation, we call for a response team (RBT's and BCBA's).. if possible we are supposed to wait until one of them and a nurse is present to go into a hold. But of that is the only way in a damgerous situation we jump into action and behavior team takes over when they get there. But normally they are already present. Normally these kids already have a plan in place but that could always change. Its all based on the kiddo

I think just lumping all gen z together is kind of offesive. Like you all aknowledge there are plenty of gen z teachers. I think it should be genz/gen alpha not just gen z. I only say that because being a teacher there are a lot of assumptions being made about me just because I am gen z and it can lead to a feeling of exclusion. So i wish people wouldnt just lump all gen z together when half are full adults and half are still like 11 years old.

My point exactly. Gamecube kids DON'T belong in the same generation as iPad kids. Not all of us are obsessed with TikTok and speak in this weird jargon either. There's a subgeneration called Zillennials which are people born between 1995 and 2000 and consist of younger Millennials and older Gen Z's. So when people ever ask I just say I'm a Zillennial

My son did that last year where they had to have the other kids leave the room because he was throwing desk he was in 3rd grade . As a parent I felt horrible and honestly would have given them permission to restrain him if they asked or if it was allowed because no way was that ok. He is ADHD and odd on a 504 but still no excuse for him to do that as his mom I have taken parenting classes and have therapy for him and we are in family counseling

Room clears happen all the time in elementary nowadays. I hate it. No child should be allowed to destroy property; it starts a really bad precedent for future behaviors and expectations.

I am 25 and can't tell time and it's not because of laziness... I literally tried to learn, but my brain just doesn't understand... I even tried learning as an adult... Maybe the kids in school today are lazy, but I genuinely tried to learn and still can't comprehend.

Same here. It was hard for me to learn time, learn cursive, and even learn Spanish (which ironically is the language my family speaks) and it's because I'm neurodivergent and can't retain some information or skills easier than others. Funny how I don't know how to have a conversation with my family in Spanish but I DO know every single Disney Channel show I used to watch...

Smarties is old my coworker in their 50's had a son in kindergarten when their teacher taught the son how to do it. I think they still don't understand how to be around each other, more so when they physically or mentally hurt each other.

No. Mewing has to do with improving the muscles in your jawline. And that’s why they “can’t talk” because they’re mewing. That thing with their thumb across their jaw.

I usually don’t care whether my students use the same kind of colour scheme, or any for that matter, in their folders. However, as a chemistry teacher, sometimes it is essential that they use colour or even a particular one. Now, my most Gen Z-Story ever was a ninth grader who, when told to mark this particular ion in red, refused to do so on the grounds that she wanted her folder to be black and white. Instead she used a grey highlighter, put an arrow to the highlighted bit and the word “red” next to it. I’m sorry, but WTF????

Hi, I’m a 14 (15 on the 22nd) year old Gen Z. I heard a kid describe the word “Gyatt” as meaning: God Your A** Thic Thic I’m pretty sure that’s what it is- Skibidi? Some creepy character from a series of some sort- my cousin watch the whole series in one night.. Mewing.. I’m pretty sure it’s where you put your tongue to the very top of your mouth and it makes your jawline sharper?? Idk- they also trace their finger across their jawline to show off ig..

Man I don't know what state yall teach at but in Las Vegas it's kinda free reign in the form of protecting yourself and breaking up fights. Mostly cause of how often it just happens here. Only thing to be reprimanded about is an "excess of force" in a sense.

Demerits were the best thing put into our school for warnings depending on the teacher they would get chances till they got a demerit whether that was one and done or three or four cause that would be last resort most of the time which was great because all teachers had to give a warning to the student specifically or to the whole class if you go two that is a detention... for our school since it was a Christian School we wrote Bible verses which was great
